the internet needs to be treated as a utility like water, gas and electricity but all utilities need to be nationalised

Comcast used to charge $80 a month for basic internet. A new local company was deploying fiber cables in town. Once it was time to upgrade, they jacked up the price to 110 and refused to budge. I told them that a fiber company would be in town in a few months. they refused to lower the price. I had no option but to accept but canceled when fiber became available. Comcast is now advertising $30 internet in the area with a $200 signup visa card. No thanks, Comcast!

Fun fact, Chattanooga pissed off telecom companies, it's now illegal to do anywhere else because it was too successful.

Arg “1 gigabyte” and “25 gigabyte” are such schoolboy errors for a $100m tech publication to get wrong on a video about ISPs.

$40/ month for 100/100 mb fiber here in Oregon, Comcast used to have a corner in the market and fiber made it cheaper because of the choice

Internet lines are like roads: it would be actually cheapest for everyone if a public government regulates if not operates the underlying network, because then it’s not exclusive to the payload generators (whether trucking companies or ISPs).

It is frustrating to see the lack of competition between ISPs leading to such high prices, truly unfair to consumers. The concept of natural monopolies is interesting though, didn't realize how challenging it would be for new ISPs to enter the market.

In my old apartment building I was being charged $85 a month for 150 down and 25 up with a 1.2 TB data cap from Xfinity. I bought a house and moved just a few miles away where I had four different isps that serviced the address. I called AT&t and told them if they don't give me their best deal possible then I'm simply going to go with a different ISP that will.

Here in italy we are lucky to have 20+ ISPs competing on the same half public infrastructure founded with public money. A very interesting case study that keep price down and advance technology for everyone. It common to have 2.5gbps down and 1gbps up for less than 30€/month.

ISPs basically created a monopoly where they agree to only provide in certain areas and not others so that they are the only choice for some. (Where the alternative is worse internet)

I live in Chattanooga and I love my gigabit connection from EPB. It's fast, cheap (under $70 a month), and reliable. They even offer 2.5Gb residential service. I will never go back to Comcast.

Here in Brazil is very normal to see at least 3 ISPs in a medium city, I live in a small town, there are 4 diferent ISPs

in italy we pay around 20€ a month for 1 Gigabit (1000mb download, 1000/500 upload). For 25€ we can get 2.5 Gigabit. the modem, if you need to buy it from them is around 240€, paid in 5€ a month. There is a lot of competition and we live primary in buildings/apartments, so probably because of that there is so much difference than USA.

Not to mention Government shenanigans because they can choose which ISPs they send money to for putting in and upgrading Infrastructure which can also drive competition out of a market. Seen it happen first hand

I work at an ISP, though for obvious reasons won't broadcast which, and can guarantee that as far as the one I work at the only incentive is the stock trade value and what keywords increase it. Nothing else matters.
