Sandwiched in between Brazil and Argentina, the two largest countries in South America by area, is the relatively small Uruguay. Despite having such large and powerful neighbors, Uruguay has been independent since 1828. The fact that this small nation has survived for nearly 200 years without being absorbed into either Argentina or Brazil sparks the question: Why does Uruguay exist?

Very nice and informative video! I'm glad to see that my country was the topic of one of the first videos in this channel :) The history of Uruguay is largely unknown even to Uruguayans themselves, so we greatly appreciate it! I also watched your video about African flags and I think this channel has a great future ahead! So keep it up! Also, you definitely have a new sub :D

Artigas wasn't a gaucho!!! I will edit to explain. Gauchos are the employees who work in the countryside with cows, sheep and horses, as a job, like the cowboys in USA. But Artigas came from a very wealthy Spaniard family that had "estancias" ranches for Americans, and he did probably wore clothes like a gaucho, but he was more like the owner, what you might call, a rancher, un estanciero, for us, or hacendado for other countries where they call ranches... "haciendas". Anyhow, in any monument of him you will NOT see him dressed like a gaucho, he was more like a military, and that is the kind of uniform he is depicted in the monuments. You can call him "criollo," because he was born in Uruguay to Spaniard parents.

Yes I am aware of the circumstances of his birth but allow me to explain. Yes, Artigas was not born a gaucho, but he strived to be one. When he was young he rejected his lifestyle and become a cattle rustler. Artigas identified strongly with them struggles of the gauchos in the Banda Oriental, which is one of the reasons why he chose to join the revolution against Spain. According to legend, when he was losing his health as an elderly man in exile, he mounted his horse and died in his saddle, as a true gaucho. Thus, I thought it would be appropriate to refer to him as a gaucho in the video.

Thank you for keeping me honest though. I hope you otherwise found the video informative!

You could also call him a legend or a made-up-story. How likely is it all really? I'm not saying events didn't happen, however, I am saying that in retrospect and looking backwards from a point much later, people assigned intent where there hadn't been any. Come on, Artigas wasn't some kind of patriot for the Banda Oriental, it wasn't a country! All Artigas could have been, at most, was a self-centered and selfish estanciero who wished to advance his own selfish interest far beyond anything a national power would let him. We have some way to see this today. What does "Artiguista" mean? As Cabildo Abierto says, "We're Artiguistas!" Okay, but what does that mean?! Nothing. It means that you do whatever ya want to advance your own ends and desires cause Artigas was a nobody, but in the end, we had to build statues to somebody, que no?!

I was never curious about it at first, as it usually flew into the back of my mind when I thought. But I only realised now after watching that Uruguay wasn't just a corrupt nation after independance as my first thought like most of South America. Thanks for giving me a new view and something new to research! Great video!
