Short answer: Brazil Long answer: Napoleon. If you learn about the colonial history of Brazil, you can easily identify at least 4 areas bound to become an independent country. The best example is the Amazon region, which was never part of colonial Brazil, but a separate colony called Grão Pará. Northeast Brazil around Pernambuco, Bahia and Rio Grande do Sul had also strong regional identity - the last one was an independent country for 10 years. Brazil would end only with Rio, the rich mines, and the poor areas of São Paulo and Paraná. But when Napoleon invaded Portugal, the royal family came to Brazil, and it was a portuguese prince who ended up leading Brazil to independence and national identity. And had enough military force to fight separatists.

Wait...Liberia was never colonised? Wasn't it colonised by the United States in reaction to the fear that formally enslaved Africans would not be able to live alongside their former opressors, so they made up a country to send them to? EDIT: I'm guessing Geography Bible means it in terms of European colonialism. But since US colonialism is basically just an off-shoot of European colonialism, I think it's at least worth a mention... Especially because the effects of the colonisation are still felt in Liberia (such as the disparity between Indigenous Liberians and those that descended from African Americans)
@cdee759 ай бұрын

This video fails to mention one other factor. The population of west Africa was significantly larger during colonial times than South America, due in large part to the decimation of South American populations by disease and other deliberate and indirect results of colonial activities. Much of the population brought over to Brazil specifically were slaves whose culture and ties were eliminated. Contrast this with West Africa, which, while its own kingdoms and political entities such as they were were also thoroughly disrupted by colonialism, still retained a fairly large population with numerous ethnic groups. Now, thanks to colonialism of course, the modern West African political borders routinely cross ethnic group lines and/or lump different ethnic groups together, the continued existence of these groups did give an inherent push towards creation of more countries from existing colonies. This is obviously just one of many factors in addition to what the video discussed.

Catholicism certainly played a role (manifest destiny and the Papal line of demarcation) in South America. Also SA was geographically a much harder reach from Europe involving long and perilous sea journeys, where as Africa was right out the southern doorstep. Mediterranean north Africa was already "Europeanised" early on. And now I'll get quite controversial by implying sub-Saharan Africa was and still is predominantly black, and in many ways much more "alien" to the European psyche. In short, it needed to be "cleaned up" (missionaries, Christianity, white rule, industrial revolution, post-renaissance modernity, etc.) Surely it was theirs for the taking (wrong!)
