Unfortunately, I find myself unable to break down real images. Instead I try to find drawn references to try and use. I’m not sure why my brain is like this, but it is. Good thing I don’t wanna go professional lol it’s a hobby to alleviate anxiety.

Either or won't hurt you in the long run. Keep drawing and don't put yourself down! If learning in an "industry standard" doesn't work for you, don't pressure yourself to do it. Everyone learns differently, and there's nothing wrong with that! If drawn references help you, don't feel bad 👍

Personally I’m quite happy with where I’m at! But I shared that due to the frustration-most of the art tips are “reference from life” and I’m fairly certain it’s one mental illness or another preventing me. My pfp is actually a piece from a year ago that I adore! A few anatomy issues yes, but I started using Pinterest to find my references and that’s helped a lot :)
@adollfordolls
@adollfordolls 4 жыл бұрын
I used to have this exact problem! It's sometimes hard to see the shapes and lines in real life. If youre interested in learning how to get through it, it helps to trace over pictures to see what shapes everything is made out of, eventually you just learn to see it in your mind. However don't use the traced layer for your own art, just to see the shapes so you learn how to recreate the shapes on your own.

I used to have that problem too. But the best way around this is to drop the mentality that you *have* to do things *just* to fit this "art style" and do what you like because ur just holding yourself back, honestly. I believe that because of the same reason, a lot of artists just hold themselves back and get mad whenever they don't achieve perfection and make it look pretty for other people. After a while of doing art out of nothing else but inspiration, I had this sudden urge to finally *learn* . So I dropped the whole "finding my art style" and just studied from a bunch of websites artists to know more. Because art style, this I can guarantee, comes *after* you learn how to do something properly, this is where you can finally stylize them and feel confident that you're doing it right. And everyone starts off trying to copy the other artists way of doing art so it's not wrong either, we take some things from them as we grow as our own artist too. Lol sorry for this long ass essay but wanted to share a bit of my journey. Good day

@08dallaaa
@08dallaaa 4 жыл бұрын
not everything has to look perfect, start easy and simple! for example, you could draw a pose in stick figure form and then add precise details. you could also look at pose references on pinterest and start simple from looking at that! we all have art blocks at some point but try to get your brain working. when you're drawing either realism or cartoony, etc you can ask someone how it looks and what they think it is. that way you can get advice or tips on how to draw whatever your drawing. you can also start drawing something one by one bc you can practice that one thing everyday and eventually you'll get used to drawing it. for your art style, you want to find what makes you feel comfortable drawing. for example, what do you want your eyes to look like? try and practice what you want your eyes to look like. also, please don't copy other people's art style bc you won't be able to find and understand your art style from copying from that artist. ofc it takes time to perfect something but trust the process and keep practicing! idk if this will be helpful but this is what i have been doing!

Gesture drawings/refs are SO helpful. I recently started practicing with them a bunch and it's made anatomy a lot more digestible for me. I used to use no references because they were discouraged in the art community, but as time has gone on that mindset has mostly changed. I did alright teaching myself without references, but using them actively has sped the process up ten fold.

If you do digital art, there's an option to select a part of your drawing, and reshape it to match the size of the rest of your drawing. I don't know what much you can do with traditional art, except you can first draw the head connected to the shoulders and collarbone, and draw out the torso from there. I'm not a professional, but this is just what I do and I hope this is helpful.

Nam Nam ;-; you could also try going down a chibi style with that! chibi/cartoony styles have big heads and small bodies, so maybe you could try looking up chibi stuff and go down that route! some "flaws" you see in your style can be a great part of a style you havent tried! if youre wishing to do more realism/anime, try making the head smaller digitally. If you do traditional, just very lightly sketch the head and if it looks too big, keep making it a little smaller until you like it!

@GreySeashell-j3m
@GreySeashell-j3m 4 жыл бұрын
Break it down. Don't try to learn everything at once. You can start with a certain body part first. Don't be hasty and the reward is amazing. After that you can practice proportions and if you want to take it further, study the muscles and learn the limit of a body. Perspective is also a reaally important thing and it includes foreshortening so it's tough but like I said, the product is satisfying. Don't ever stop learning because no artist does. Good luck!

Uhm, hiya! It’s my first time watching a video from your channel, and Im so glad this popped up in my recommendations. As a young artist myself, I’ve always avoided trying to draw bodies because I would never do it well. For the past year I have improved but not really a good way. I’ve gotten too comfortable only drawing bodies from the head to the neck/torso and because of all this free time I think its a good chance to work up my skills. This has bee one of the most helpful videos Ive seen on figure drawings and I’ve wanted to thank you. I’m not very self confident in myself and I always bring myself down, especially when it comes to art. I’m working on becoming better, and I will absolutely watch more of your videos. Thank you so much.

Uhhhhh I think they worded that wrong 😂😂 To get a better idea of anatomy, you can draw (and study references of) nude models to get an idea of the shape of the body but you don't have to draw the naughty bits. That's why in a male blank base, down by the crotch doesn't have that "part" shown. It only shows as what someone looks like with pants on except there isn't any clothes. Basically it gives the basic shape of the body without actually showing the naughty buts

Even though I am a person who likes to draw animals in their anthro or feral form this helped me surprisingly much! I am only 14, not professional at all, but I‘d like to share a technique tho:) (may be also helpful for people who draw furrys?) I sometimes take photos of myself for reference purposes, and I have to admit , it helps me even more than just looking up refs on the internet, because you like, idk, feel the pose. I also do that with hands and stuff. I just feel more familiar with drawing from myself, because I can also check if the poses are natural and not stiff or exhausting. I don‘t know how to explain this, and it sounded way better in my head:,)

I have a couple of books on drawing anime that help a lot too when it comes to tips on posing and stiffness. Watching speedpaints also help with shading and just breaking down art. I’ve recently been getting into 3d modeling so I sometimes use 3d models for reference! It’s like an anthro poseable doll that doesn’t cost hundreds of dollars and that you can find on the internet. If you’re interested, you can download models from Sketchfab! I’ve recently opened commissions and am officially making money off my work at age 14 with these tips!

@Yukibunns
@Yukibunns 4 жыл бұрын
It's very hard, even I struggle with that sometimes 😭 We are our own worst critics. Nobody hates our flaws more than ourselves. We tend to hyper fixate on what's not perfect and beat ourselves up about it. In Amberlynn's case, most people who dislike her feel that way because she's dishonest or makes bad excuses for herself. I rarely ever see a comment making fun of her appearance. We expect other people to think that way about us (insulting our appearance or small flaws, etc) But you know what, the truth is someone out there is always gonna have something to say that we aren't gonna like. Someone is going to think we're ugly, fat, dumb, bad at whatever it is we're doing, and all that hooplah. It's always going to exist. But we can't fixate on that. Most of those people wouldn't spend more than 2 seconds thinking about you, and you shouldn't think of yourself like that for any longer either. Treat yourself like you love yourself, even if you don't. Take good care, dress in ways that make you feel good, eat things that fuel your body and make you feel good. It's ok to make misteps sometimes. If you catch yourself thinking something negative, stop in the moment and turn it into an honest compliment, even if you don't believe it at the time. You deserve to love yourself

Dang, I started drawing while listening to you mentioning how it doesn't always have to be perfect, and even though that's the value i go off the most, i easily forget it. You talking about how it's ok to be messy and imperfect really helped me just form my sketches my OWN way instead of following other stupid principles. I actually seem comfortable with what I'm doing, and it's becoming more fun now. Remember that you just helped a freshman get over his art troubles :) thank you once more

something i do personally is look at anime figures (either ones i own or online, ones you own are better because you can get all sorts of perspectives on them) and do figure drawings of them! it's like an anime style live figure if you have any of your own, and images online of them work too for simple poses!

My question: how the heck do you know where and how to place the lines in hair???
@otaku-chan4888
@otaku-chan4888 4 жыл бұрын
You need to treat those lines in hair like the piping in track pants. They need to a) follow the direction and flow of the hair (if the hair is curly, they are curly too). b) NOT be in the middle of the hair strand outline (they need to give the hair strand volume. They should curve closer to one of the outlines depending on which direction the character is facing. For example, if your character has straight hair and is looking to their right (and your left), then the lines should be placed closer to the left of your lines.) c) practice. This sounds dumb but after some time, you'll know when the lines in hair just _look_ right. Just like how you can instantly tell a sentence structure is wrong before exactly pinpointing the type of grammar mistake, observe and refer drawings with hair you like, and copy that style as best as you can. Imitation is the highest form of flattery - and also the fastest way to getting a gut instinct. Remember not to always trace though!

My advice is to try to learn something in as many of your drawings as you can. Like in one drawing you try to improve your hands, or in another you try knees or maybe the placement of facial features on the head. Try to remember where things are positioned and how they're shaped and you'll improve (somewhat) quickly. I'd also recommend thinking about how it would look if it was 3d; how things curve around each other, what goes in front, what goes behind, etc. :)

I get art style crisis all the time, because I get so frustrated and the littlest bit insecure when I can't get the perspective of the anatomy right (like when a hand is being held towards the camera) and I go through an art block for a while, and then I get inspiration that gets me kicking for a good while and then repeat. Even so, I'm not giving up. One day I'll be able to draw a pose in perspective and it's gonna be awesome 😌 i'll burn through as many tutorials as it takes. Thanks for the wonderful video! You really opened my eyes to all the possibilities that I didn't even know existed haha
