I've read the Star Wars A New Hope book but it was years ago and I didn't remember that part from the book about Ben talking to R2-D2.

George Lucas's original premise was that the SW saga came from "The Journal of the Whills", a legendary tome which documented the history of the SW Galaxy, & the pivotal events, organizations, & beings which shaped it. Based upon our "eyewitness" experiences, it seems highly likely that the events in the saga period were originally witnessed, or acquired, & then compiled, by none other than R2-D2 himself, & his accounts being eventually passed down to or discovered by the Whills, & then incorporated into the journal. There are three particular facts which all point in this direction. One, an innocuous, run-of-the-mill astromech droid, often on the sidelines, & typically assumed to undergo occasional memory wipes, would be the last being in the galaxy anyone would suspect of acquiring and/or retaining such a plethora of detailed information about the period & it's events, especially the exact words & actions of it's major players. Two, since older tech hardware, like computers & droids, tend to get dismissed or discarded for newer models & types, he would likely be eventually abandoned, forgotten, or assumed to be long inoperable or scrapped as the years passed, especially as the sentients of those times eventually passed into the force. Three, & most revealing, is the consistent portrayal of C3PO being a blundering, inept, & annoying fop, which rings far more like a scathing & critical personal assessment, than a detached, factual one. Clearly, all evidence points to Artoo being the original chronicler of the saga period of the galaxy far, far away we've all come to love. Thank the maker, he gave us one hell of a ride.

If we are talking about the opening battle of ep III, the fighters used by obi wan and anakin were of the same type, with anakin carrying r2d2 and obi wan carrying r4 whatever. If the Jedi purge happened anyway and Palpatine some how escaped Windu and turned Anakin to the dark side, I think he either would have died in order 66, (most unlikely) Help Yoda fight The Emperor killing him rebuilding the Jedi order., (Anakin and Obi Wans fight would have been the same just no recovery from Anakin) Or fail to defeat The Emperor and go with Obi Wan to Tatooine to watch over Luke.

It's not "not planning ahead", it's not writing the prequels trying to be consistent with the original movies. George Lukas tried to milk every original character and make them super awesome, when if he had been loyal to the original script the droids shouldn't been in the prequels at all. Darth Vader didn't have to be THE CHOSEN ONE, Chewbacca didn't have to be a general in the Wookie army, Yoda didn't have to be the head of the Jedi Council, etc etc. The beauty of the original movies is that the characters were normal characters that became heroes, not just superheroes saving the day.

If you ever had any creative aspirations you would understand. A story that goes on as long as star wars that does not have any retconning done is a story created by someone who is uncreative and usually it will always lead to a bland and shallow story. Darth Vaders true identity was a retcon that made the entire Star Wars franchise so much more interesting and without it Star Wars probably would never have become as great as it ended up becoming.

in the legend book Rise and Fall of Darth Vader, the first time he sees C-3PO on Cloud City, he’s already been blasted apart by the stormtroopers. He’s filled with hatred and orders him to be melted down. However, after Chewie “rescues” 3PO’s parts from being melted down by the Ugnauts, the droid’s parts are again brought to Vader. This triggers a flashback from early on in the book, where young Anakin is bringing home 3PO’s parts to his mom. At first, she is weary about letting Anakin keep 3PO, but after Anakin begs her, saying the droid deserves compassion, she agrees. However, she tells him he must take care of the droid, because he doesn’t deserve something unless he takes care of it. Upon remembering this, Vader cannot stand to see the droid destroyed, so he orders 3PO be given to Chewie to be fixed.

You could say that he didn't want Luke to know about having a relationship with R2, or a lot of his other past. Eventually it could relate to him telling Luke that his father was Darth Vader, and not just his friend. Even before the prequels, I never looked at it like Obi-Wan never remembered R2. Obviously they had a past since Leia pointed out that the Droid belonged to him. And you could see the uneasiness of the Obi-Wan while he and Luke were talking. Like he was purposely holding back information. That just shows the acting abilities of Alec Guinness, more than anything though.

Its simple, He's telling the truth. He never owned a droid. Now don't get me wrong. Obi Wan did use a few R4's while he was in the service of the Jedi council. But like star fighters and speeders they where issued to a Jedi by the temple. The temple maintained and owned them not the Jedi. Seeing as being a Jedi was not a job and they didn't get paid for their work. It makes sense that the only way a droid might have been owned by a Jedi is if you had one before entering the order or if it was gifted to them from a family member or if it was a reward by a grateful person.

You know, I've found this one line of dialogue to be one of the most interesting in 9 films, and props to you for making a video about it. Respectfully, I don't buy the explanation of the 2015 book, that's ret-conning new dialogue to fix the facts. I think in 1976 Lucas absolutely did know there was a backstory to be told. Look at the way Guinness responds to Hamill when asked about his father. There is hesitation. There's a pause, and a moment of preparation. Lucas had to have directed Guinness to carefully choose his words, and instructed him that he was speaking a lie. Now, with the droid comment, I find it a reflection on Obi Wan's life itself. I think he was speaking truthfully. Sure, he lied about Anakin. But Obi Wan has done so much in his life. He has had an existence full of adventure, action, and travel around the galaxy. By the time he's 'an old man' living as a hermit, can he really keep track of all the droids he's encountered throughout his life, especially when models look the same? Also - think of things in your own life that were cherished, or part of your everyday life for years - a belonging, or things you saw everyday. A school backpack. A car. A location. A route you took over and over. Things you knew inside and out at the time, but now, decades later, you have to be reminded of, and somethings you've forgotten all-together. I took one route to work for years, but with the job a distant memory, if you ask me now to find where I used to go, I'd be at a loss, even though I drove it daily. In summary, that one line in A New Hope has always stuck with me, because I find it to be an interesting reflection on how long, and how wonderfully packed full, life really is.

This is a very interesting answer. If you don't mind I would also like to mention that Obi Wan knew r2 for less years than the ones he's been without him after. 13 years from Ep1 to Ep3, and 20 years from Ep3 to Ep4.

But Obi-Wan DID own a droid. He owned R4-P17, The red Astromech that gets destroyed at the beginning of Episode 3

How do we know he actually "owned" the droid. Maybe there was a droids-r-us rental shop where he just went and rented it for a few days. Hope he got the good insurance plan...

Just because he flew with R4 doesn't mean he owned it. He was using a piece of equipment that was issued to him, like a company car.

NO he did not. The droid belonged to the Republic... R4 was part of the ship. He never left the socket and Jedi do not have possessions besides their sabers.

Yoda seems more stuck-up about the flawed Jedi code than Obi Wan was, so if anything, Anakin's descent to the Darkside would have been faster. Remember that Count Dooku did fell to the Darkside and he was a direct apprentice of Yoda. IMO, Qui Gon Jinn is the most suitable master that could have stopped Anakin from becoming Darth Vader, but he didn't get the chance.

Personally, I think it was because he never owned R2 in that sense. He remembers R2, but it’s not his property. Remember the emphasis, “I don’t seem to remember _owning_ a droid.”

At the end of episode 3, C-3PO and r2 get their memories erased. That being said, by the time A New Hope comes out they don't remember what happened with Anakin
