Balbanes Beoulve That's really the motive behind borderlands 2
@shinoblitz96416 жыл бұрын
Balbanes Beoulve history is written by the victory, so if you’re making a game with new characters and you don’t outright say who’s the hero or the villain most times the “villain” would be seen as an antihero, like take John Marston, for the time he was a villain, he was in a gang, robbed some banks, killed a bunch of people and when he left and got caught up with the law they said hunt down your former gang and you get your family back, he did that and he was expecting to go free but that wasn’t the deal, in the end he still had to be held accountable for the hundreds he’s killed and in the end he was killed, we see him as an anti hero because we see his point of view as the person trying to get out of the gang and law drama but if we look on the sid rod the law John marathon is an ex gang member and criminal that may get his family set free but still has to pay for his killing spree. The POV changes villains into antiheroes

Good is dependent on the team, for halo an example the master chief is the bad guy/demon the grunts literally blow themselves up at an attempt to be a hero The covenant see master chief as a enemy/bad guy In halo 2 as the arbiter are you the bad guys or are you the good guys? Another easy example of the good side In a multiplayer game your team is the good side, and the opponent the bad guys, however it’s the same for that team.

Most of the Assassin’s Creed games do this. Majority of the Templars have noble goals; peace, order, a better world. There’s the ones who are solely in it for power like Cesare. But Al Mualim, all the Templars in AC3 except for Church, The Ottoman Templars in revelations. They all really only want positive change. The assassins are basically anarchists, and they view any sort of hierarchy as evil. The Templars claim the majority of people cannot handle having the freedom to govern themselves, and time and time again they’re proven right.
@runbaa92856 жыл бұрын
Barry Allen Porter With Origins basically confirming that Watch Dogs and AC takes place in the same universe, I wonder if Abstergo is going to have a competition regarding the state of order. I'd love to see a three-way secret war going on here.
@shadow_psych70696 жыл бұрын
Barry Allen Porter Good point, but your analogy of the Templars and Assassins is exactly the point that Falcon is making. After we got to play Haythem in AC3 and got to see the perspective of the Templars, we could understand why they're doing what they're doing. The 2 factions ultimately want the same thing, at least in concept, which is peace, the end of pointless suffering, prosperity for the world and the ppl who live in it, but they have different beliefs on how best to achieve that goal. This divide is one of the most difficult and complicated manifestations of reality and choice, not only in video games but IRL too. It's impossible to know who is right and who is wrong between the Templars and Assassins, therefore it's also impossible to know who are the good guys and who are the bad guys, cuz a choice must be made and once it's made we can't know the outcome of the option that wasn't chosen. You might jump to the conclusion that the Assassins are the good guys, since they're the ones fighting for freedom, but in the context of the game there exists tools through which total control is actually possible. So, I ask, how can we logically conclude that free will is preferable when all evidence suggests it's not only the cause of all the problems but we've also never known any other method? Because remember, in the context of the game, it's not the same as historical enslavement because it would be through mind control. Which begs another question. If the world was under mind control, would it even be possible to know that you're being controlled? And if this truly lead to world peace and prosperity, would that not be preferable? You can't miss what you don't know, you don't have. This is why free will is considered to be preferable, because we THINK we have it, but do we? How do we know the controller hasn't made us believe we do? How could we ever know otherwise? Peace cannot exist so long as choice is an option, because individuals make choices and collectives make peace, but only because of a choice.

Mr Mccreamy -Honestly I can completely understand Iden defecting to the Rebel Alliance after seeing her home world being sacrificed for the Empire's survival. We see the same thing happen in real life. People fight and die for the cause that they grew up amongst because they've never had a reason to question their actions. It's typically not until the boot starts tramplingon something that personally affects them before the cognitive dissonance shatters. That being said I still hate how they handled Iden turning. It should have been at least half of the campaign worth of character development before we finally see her changing sides. I'd still rather of had a whole game as the empire though. With the Rebel's story woven in seamlesslyalong the way.

I'm probably going to get hated on for this but I think your thought process was a bit skewed when you made this video. 1. A villain by your standard is one whose ultimate goal is destruction. 2. Anything that doesn't do that in this context is somehow an antihero? 3. You are aware that anti-hero is just an unconventional hero right? He doesn't have to be an asshole. 4. How does sympathy for a villain disqualify their villain status? 5. Simply because you understand a villain's motives doesn't mean you stop being a horrible person. 6. I don't understand the linear story case. 7. Choosing to enslave the human race instead of destroying it doesn't make you a better person if you get my gist. 8. You should have clearly defined what type of villain before going further into the video.
@alexanerose48206 жыл бұрын
1.) Yeah. Those are more destructive forces of nature than villains who have a reasonable goal 2.)Same sentiments here 3.)True but witha hero being all noble, kind, brave, caring, and etc being one is kinda the common trait 4.)It's easy to completely hate a villain and just kill him. The moment you know is the moment you care and the moment you care is the moment he is no longer a villain but a simple enemy. Villains can only be slain or victorious, enemies can always become friends. 5.)Well horrible person is kinda subjective. For example the hero slaying multitudes of minions who are probably friends, comrades, and etc make the hero a horrible person because...well..genocide and all that. 6.)Linear stories need good narratives and good characters since you can't influence them. Hence they need to be made attractive and relatebale which would then make them sympathetic. Once you get sympathetic you get invested and then you want them to win and then so on. Remember in a game you need to kill the villain. 7.)True but it makes you a lesser evil or heck even the good guy considering that it's better to always live then die. 8.)Agree

I think people are using "anti-hero" way too loosely. It's merely a lack of idealism and established morality...which describes most average people without their pretenses. But they are hardly going out and harming people, which a lot of video game characters in fact do lol

In the first Overlord game it was a pretty good morality system, you could be Heroic or Evil, you had different quest choises which had a heavy impact on your moral level, you could feed the first village or keep the food for your minions (as a bonus evil booster you could loot all of their homes too) and so on. And depending on your moral level, you could expect rebel villagers or not, and if you're at max Evil status you gained a demonic vibe, aura, extra horns on your armor, and also enhanced damage on spells and attacks. The moral outcomes were actually named Good Evil Overlord and True Evil Overlord, just for the lols, because you are actually supposed to be evil in the game but you can choose.

I was surprised nobody mentioned playing the Zerg campaign in Starcraft and it's expasion - Broodwar (the player as a Cerebrate). Also playing the Undead campaigns for both Warcraft and the Frozen Throne expansion controlling Arthas. You can't find any good that you, as a player, would do to each of their game worlds.
@Woodland_Wizard6 жыл бұрын
never played SC1, but in the 2nd game Cerrigan is taking revenge on a bad guy, which is good in the narrative. While the zerg are just trying to survive and spread, as many animals do, which might not be good, but not really bad either imo. The Undead campaign in WC3 has a lot going on behind the scenes. Ner'Zul is using Arthas to get rid of the dreadlords that supervise him, so that he can bring the scourge against the Legion, thus saving Azeroth. ...kinda
@ratcheeto6 жыл бұрын
in sc1 kerrigan acts entirely in the interest of the zerg and kills a lotta people. in brood war she acts entirely in her own interests and kills even more people. in sc2 she's "no longer controlled" by the overmind or something along those lines but up until then she only does what she does for power and control. and in wc3 while the scourge do rebel and help save azeroth, he's still only motivated by revenge but i guess whether or not that's evil is up to you.. my point is that the motivations of even the most 2 dimensional villains are pretty much just that- power, control, and i guess for villains like the joker, chaos. if we want to define that as evil, then i'd say kerrigan at least fits that description
@Suksass6 жыл бұрын
Except for the fact that Zerg are not evil. And Kerrigan acts in the interest of Zerg. And that is even before we mention SC2. You can't simply designate the whole nation or race as evil. Undead are definitely an evil race in Warcraft 3 as they are servants of demons. But isn't Frozen Throne campaign about Sylvanas freeing the undead from Demons control? Makes Her more of the hero. Arthas remains evil, though mostly due to the Frostmourne sword and later lich king armour.
@ratcheeto6 жыл бұрын
yeah my comment was worded poorly. i agree with you, the point i was trying to make applies pretty much only to brood war; where the overmind is dead and she doesn't seem to act for the zerg, but for herself
@Suksass6 жыл бұрын
I haven't played brood war but know a bit of it. Technically she still acts in the interest of Zergs as she has her own vision for them. She has been Zergified after all. The problem with that narrative is that Zerg way of survival is absorbing other species. From our stand point this might seem evil, but we our selves literally do similar things everyday to preserve our own species.
@tl_nik0n3536 жыл бұрын
Sorry, but yeah there are real world villains. Just because they aren't twirling their mustaches and being obvious about their villainy, doesn't mean they don't exist. See almost the entirety of the US congress for an example of real world villainy. You don't think those people know that taking bribes and rigging the game in favor of their donors is wrong? If you honestly think they don't know what they're doing is bad you're naive as fuck. They know and they do it anyway. Whatever the motivation may be, doesn't matter. At the end of the day wrong doing is wrong doing and if you do wrong consistently and without remorse for the people you're hurting, you're a fucking villain.
@tl_nik0n3536 жыл бұрын
Not really. A lot of things are more nuanced sure, but to pretend that there are no objectively bad actions in life, and that people are incapable of doing them, is pretty stupid.
@vullord6666 жыл бұрын
They aren’t any “real” villains. The best we can get are the generic definitions for fictional purposes. This stems from the fact that morality in itself is subjective. It becomes difficult to categorize people by right and wrong when one’s definition of right and wrong differs from person to person. Its not like there’s a universal good and bad. Put simply anything thats not a fact or can’t be researched is subjective and it becomes difficult to label people with terms as vague and ambiguous as “good” or villain. The law exists because of differences in morality. That said there are certain terms to describe people like corrupt or distrustful. It doesn’t mean your evil just that you have fickle values or can be influenced by money (who can’t?)
@tl_nik0n3536 жыл бұрын
Lol. That's complete bullshit, but sure. Whatever you say.
@rosestar13246 жыл бұрын
Crusty GymSock Well, you're not them nor are you in their shoes. Sure I know robbing a bank is wrong, but I do it anyway to keep a roof over my family's head and make sure I have money for my son's brain surgery he needs. Humans are morally gray, not black and white. Heck, even serial killers are a dark shade of gray. Usually serial kills are made when they either haven't been properly taught how to deal with emotions or they have a twisted sense of justice or other reasons. Humans are not mustache twirling villains.
@tl_nik0n3536 жыл бұрын
And I would argue that a corrupt politician, being a human capable of reason, knows that being corrupt is morally wrong, and does it anyway because they enjoy money and power. That's villainy.

AHM I know why. Its because Germany was left in a destitute state having been stuck with the blame of WW1, and forced to pay impossibly high reparations. The country was also shamed and treated like villains for starting a war that everyone had equal part in. I've seen many WW2 documentaries, I understand Hitler's motivations and harsh past. That still doesn't excuse the destruction he caused or the genocide. Everyone has motivations, and in their own eyes it justifies their actions. This doesn't make their actions valid, if it did you wouldn't be able to call any action wrong because it's always justified from the perpetrators perspective (from those who cheat on their spouses to school shooters)

Right?

@NSFSponsor6 жыл бұрын
The BatMeth No, Marlene definitely implies there were others like Ellie. Joel asks her if they have done this before and what if it doesn't work and she doesn't respond, she looks away. Even if that wasn't the case, Ellie was definitely the best bet for humanity at the time. She herself wanted to make that sacrifice for the greater good. Joel denied her what she wanted to do becuase he wanted a daughter. It was 100% selfish. Albeit understandable, which is why I like the game amd Joel as a character.

You don't necessarily have to *destroy* everything, i prefer to conquer everything. for instance in the first prototype game you save the city as alex mercer, in the second game he's trying to take over everything and spread his virus. why not let me do that? i'm already familiar with the character from the first game, and it would become a bit like shadow of war. making your evolved, planting them in the highest echelons of blackwatch and gentech (i think those were the bad guys, not sure), assassinating high value targets and absorbing all their memories. it all adds an element of strategy to the action.

Tales of berseria you are pretty bad. Ands I don't feel like understanding the motivation behind someone who is evil makes them not evil. A character that's willing to kill a town full of innocent people to get at the man who killed a family member of theirs is still evil. I dont feel you have to want to blow up the world to be evil, you can just be fine with it burning around you for all you care to get what you want.

I liked that they allowed you to play as the Decepticons in Transformers, or as Dracula in Lords of Shadow. Maybe a "reverse Horror-Game" could work, a bit like Dead by Daylight. You play as a Monster stalking the NPCs, killing them off one by one, defeating their countermeasures and so on and so forth. The catch would be, that you woukdn't get a clear motivation, just the game telling you what to do in tooltips and tutorials. There could even be a possibility to discover the truth behind these messages and then to either join or fight what ever you find. Though it ould be a problem to do something similar to Dishonored, where you can either only use 10% the game has to offer or go down the evil path. While being an interesting message about good and evil, it hinders the enjoyment of the game if its narrative turns into a "quit having fun, you're doing it wrong"-situation. Basically you would have to figure out how to make the Player choose evil for evils sake, without it being more fun gameplay or the only way the game can progress, as this would essentially trick the player into evilness, making the character they play more relatable and less evil.

At what point does an anti-hero transition to an outright villain then? What about Haythem Kenway? You play as him for quite some time in AC3 and he is an outright Templar. Unless you don't see the Templars as actually evil in which case this video seems kind of pointless and then is just about, "blowing up the world?". A transition always has to be made at some point for there to even be a story. And the world needs to have a premise for the degrees of evil it offers. You could argue a hero would blow up the world if its citizens were deemed evil. It's not so much what a character does as why he is doing it and at what cost. To lots of people there are plenty of playable characters whose others beliefs would define as a villain regardless of primary goals or other contributions.

I think you kinda went around the question tho. For example, in the Batman universe, the Joker is established as the villain. You could follow a storyline where you play as him, which would make him a protagonist, but not a hero. There are villains like Mr Freeze who could have an end goal such as saving his wife, and if would make a great storyline to play. I think the question people mostly want answered is “why aren’t developers making more games where you play as the villain”, but not as a side quest, as like, the main storyline. The Batman universe especially has so many fascinating villains and they would all be so much fun to play as.

So... after the first three minutes of rambling, I was all, "Okay... but what about all those Murder Hobo Simulators?"... then I managed to get to the 4:20 mark... and I was all, "Okay... but what about all those Murder Hobo Simulators?" Maybe the biggest issue is that gamers never actually reflect upon the actions of their PCs in games, what the general out comes one would think of them as being, what those actions would suggest about the nature of that person, etc. When I play an RPG of sorts and have my character enter into a random villagers house and steal everything from their home, just all, "hello, I'm the chosen one, turn your eye away while I make legendary use of this stuff. Legendary use being mostly having it lining my knapsack or me selling it at the store"... when I walk into the throne room in an RPG--both jRPG and cRPG and eat like fifty cheese wheels in front of the King... my head has me generally thinking the King must view me as a total fucking asshole. Hell, I'm not even going to act like my characters in the Monster Hunter games are anything other than Murder Hobos. Hell... Capcom has even had issues not acknowledging the whole Murder Hobo elements when they write the story... but then Capcom also has gotten to the point where their Ace Attorney games are leaning on the fourth wall a fair amount as well. Again... the big issue with your rant--and why I had issues getting past the four minute mark is mostly: most gamers do not question their actions and movements in a video game. Look at the big divide that happened with Fire Emblem Fates. You get a decent amount of the fandom that thinks the Hoshijin are not the biggest fucking assholes to ever asshole their way around stuff... and that same amount of the fandom that takes EVERYTHING Nohr says at face value (Even though nothing anybody from Nohr ever is backed up in any concrete manner). If you notice that one of the biggest elements of Fire Emblem Fates is about the difference between what somebody says and what somebody does (which confuses a lot of gamers)... you will notice that King Garon is trying to fight a war where his army will constantly adopt enemy combatants and take them home like pet kittens "Hewo--uh... this Hoshijin uh... followed me home... can I keep 'em, Daddy Garon?"... with assassinations in Nohr mostly being SAYING loudly somebody is dead, and then giving them (another) fake mustache and claiming their name is now "Pedro" (if there name is already Pedro, it will now be Pedro with a slightly different enunciation with emphasis on different syllables). Meanwhile you have Hoshido telling people they are the good guys and doing the right thing--and having them scream louder how their actions are good and correct the more they need to cover up how they really are not. Essentially... the current audience of gamers lacks the critical thinking, in going over their current actions and behaviours and being all, "hey uh... is this actually not a bad thing to do?"... to the point where any game which has that as part of how it handles its narrative does not do well, as none of the gamers will even pick up on those elements. That is because... you are an asshole villain in very game that you play. Hell, even by doing the "behaviour or righteous good"--you usually are doing a set of actions that are ridiculously problematic and prone to cause issues and problems. This is without the general Murder Hobo elements that most video games have issues avoiding being present.
@Ehibika6 жыл бұрын
indeed, people tend to operate on the mindset of "if the game doesn't tell me it's wrong, then it is not wrong" it really does bring to question what people mean when they want to play the villain, do they just want recognition as a bad guy? or is it really just the acts? because many games already allow you to act in ways that by all means should be villainous and morally questionable, it's just that few of them call you out on it.
@gogroxandurrac6 жыл бұрын
That is a recognition of the gray nature of morality. Playing a villain would be a representation of a black and white picture of morality where your character is on the side of black. More about who you're fighting that who you are, as action games in general have you slaughtering populations of everything which is generally considered a bad thing. Without a real "white" side, the gray takes over. It isn't realistic, but neither are villains.

I'm referring to Warcraft 3 where you could actually play as Arthas and murder everyone with no anti-hero strings attached.
@reign87546 жыл бұрын
But you see, Arthas did murder everyone, but he was only doing what he thought was correct. Was brought him upon being the lich king was to stop the dreadlord (which I do not know his name) and protect his home from the plague. So he did what he thought was right, and purged strathholme, and then goes onto take up frostmourne to defeat the the dreadlord, but of course this turns him into the lich king. So if you are referring to him as completely bad, you'd be wrong, and might want to replay Wc3. Long story short, he wanted to help, but in return became a villain trying to help.
@thrallfan10566 жыл бұрын
Yes you are correct however when you get to the undead campaign Arthas becomes a straight up villain. He's no longer doing what he thinks is right or trying to save his homeland. BladeBreaker93 yep totally. He's the Walter White of video games. He started out with a cause for revenge but got addicted to the carnage he was causing and ended up being the biggest villain in the series.

Yeah he started out as an anti-hero,but later on it essentially becomes a case of "villain vs villain",where Kratos is actually the bigger of the 2 evils. However I feel like this was part of the point of the video. A lot of people don't realize that Kratos essentially becomes the villain later on,because we see the games from his perspective and his enemies are for the most part still villains on their own,so Kratos feels more like an anti-hero to most,even if he isn't.

IF YOU THINK KRATOS WAS A VILLAIN YOU NEED TO RE PLAY THE WHOLE SERIES!!!!!
@altermann19916 жыл бұрын
I did play almost all of the games(except for the upcoming game and the PSP one) and I agree that he is at least in the 2nd and 3rd game,the villain. Sure a somewhat tragic villain,but still a villain. In the second game he ravages the world with his wars,gets warned that the other gods will eventually turn on him if he continues that,then gets angry about it,when they eventually turn on him. Then he frees the titans and eventually turns on them too,because he felt betrayed by Gaia,when she didn't rescue him(which was obviously not possible for her at the moment,she was barely able to save herself) Eventually Kratos gets his revenge,kills almost all of the gods and doomed humanity in the process. Sure he realizes this at the end,which is why he releases the "hope" into the world again,but up until then you were pretty much playing the villain,dooming humanity for the sake of your own petty revenge(which pretty much started when the other gods took their revenge upon you)

I think the Chosen Undead, Bearer of the Curse and The Ashen One of the Dark Souls series are kind of a villain in a way. Like how they kill every being that they see as obstacles in their quest for curing the Undead Curse or preserving the Age of Fire

Jules Dexter Sarmiento No, those beings block their way and attack you. Forcing them to kill them to proceed. This isn't Fallout or Undertale or whatever.

Have you watched Overlord Anime? Really good antagonist who's the protagonist. However, the world building!

Oh my god I love everything about this video! I always wanted to play more villian roles and I always want less black and white villains in my heroic roles. You guys should have your hand in pitching a game

I love evil. Especially overlord

Uh, Overlord? What happened to that series? That is a series based on being the villain. Also Dungeon Keeper. Also what about asymmetrical multiplayer where one team plays as, say, the zombies? *cough left4dead cough* Next time do more research Gameranx, you disappoint me.

You either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain. I don't know about heroes and villains, but in the games Crawl and Evolve you play as monster. And Kaiju-a-gogo where you are a mad scientist that controls a giant monster.

Play Overlord, though you still are the lesser of two evils (most of the time)
@simonk73726 жыл бұрын
Nicolai Veliki no you're the pure evil, no one is more evil than the overlord
@nicolaiveliki14096 жыл бұрын
Darth Crudelis Oh come on the Overlord saves a lot of people from themselves. Sure, by killing them, or enslaving them, but he's doing something good for... himself.
@simonk73726 жыл бұрын
Nicolai Veliki with that logic every villain would be good.

Darth Crudelis First of all, I never said 'good'. But he is less evil than the Mage from the group of heros he used to belong to. Also, Shelly, Sarcasm.
