This is one of the few times where I think both legends and canon do a good job at giving us a sympathetic and believable backstory to Dooku. They remain consistent as they lead up to the character as portrayed in the prequels.

I just don’t like how he “just happened” to run into his sister. Legends handled that better imo. But I think canon helps make sense of Dooku erasing Kamino from the archives

While I like both versions, there's one thing that Canon did better than Legends, at least in my opinion. In Legends, Dooku wasn't still partnered with Sidious around the events of Phantom Menace. This means that he would later willingly join forces with Sidious, the master of the same guy that killed Qui-Gon. Dooku, even as a Sith Lord, still mourned Qui-Gon, and yet he became the replacement for the guy that killed him. This always seemed a bit contradictory to me. In Canon, Dooku was already working with Sidious around this time. He was of course angry that Maul killed Qui-Gon, but like he said to Yaddle, he had already betrayed several by that point to back down. He deep down resented Sidious, but he was already too deep.

That's a really good point, I think the canon version has more internal conflict for Dooku, he was already in too deep at that point and couldn't back away, even if he was having second thoughts.

Same for Vader he felt it was too late to turn back the only apprentice he had that didn’t want to turn back was maul because he raised him but he fooled both dooku and anakin

Ultimately, Dooku felt that the fight against the Jedi's corruption was more important than his feelings for Qui-Gon. Plus, he wanted to recruit Obi-Wan (Until Anakin killed him in RotS).

i love both versions of dooku both are so similar and relatable to me and each other i think i prefer legends dooku just a little more because before tales of the jedi we only had legends dooku to go off of for his joining palpatine in canon. and his canon reasons are shown/explained in laymens terms at best. his legends version is much more in depth and didn't conflict with the canon story overall i prefer the legends version but im happy with the canon version

That's true, his chain code even referenced Jaster Mereel. That whole story could definitely fit into canon. Which is a great thing because it's one of my favorite Star Wars comics!

Definitely feel like the Legends version is superior as Dooku has more autonomy in it, rather than a lot of his 'darkside' tendencies being from exposure to a Sith creature in DisCan. One note, they changed the timeline in DisCan back to that of Legends on when Dooku leaves the Order with Tales of the Jedi retconning 'Dooku Jedi Lost' with Dooku leaving the Order after Qui Gon's death.

I thought it was retconned at first as well, but the novel "Padawan" mentions that Dooku still visited the temple even after leaving the order. So he had already left by the time of Tales of the Jedi, he was just visiting the temple

@@therancorbattalion I'm not so sure, he still has his rank, access to the Archives, a Temple provided craft that's identical to the others in the hangar and wears the Jedi robes rather than his attire as Count.

I slightly prefer legends but I do think canon was pretty good as well. I just prefer Legends as I like how Legacy of the Jedi, Jango Fett: Open Seasons, ROTS Novelization all come together to describe how Dooku felt different from the others in the Jedi Order and eventually left it.

I think making Dooku's brother an evil despotic tyrant who hires pirates to oppress his people is a little silly. It'd be more sensible if he were simply a corrupt and decadent leader who put his own personal enrichment before the good of his people, and maybe he had some shady backroom deals with some Republic senators, so Dooku acting on his own to depose him against the wishes of the council could also be politically motivated and foreshadow the kind of leadership he prefers. The same can be said with his father hating him because he's a "freak" in a universe where midi-chlorians and the Jedi exist and are relatively common knowledge, and Serreno, despite being in the Outer Rim, is a relatively civilized planet with a sophisticated culture. It'd make more sense, in my opinion, if his father simply feared him for his gifts after hearing exaggerated legends spread about the power of the Force, that one day he would use them to usurp power from him, or something to that effect. No such complaints towards the Battle of Galidraan, which is simply an excellent piece of Star Wars storytelling that elegantly connects Dooku and Jango Fett together without feeling forced or overly coincidental. A corrupt politician deceiving the Jedi into acting as his personal cleanup crew to tie up loose ends, and the Deathwatch being motivated by a chance for their most hated enemies to kill each other is also a clever way to force a conflict without it feeling, well, forced. The only complaint or critique I do have is that maybe Jango killed a few too many Jedi to be believable. Especially the ones he did without a weapon.

Those are some great points! I definitely think making Dooku's brother more of a shady politician could've worked for motivating Dooku's distrust of the Republic. I also wonder if Dooku's father called him a freak and pushed him away because he was afraid, but the story could've played up that angle more

@@therancorbattalion While it was a sith who struck the blow the jedi councle, their supposed allies and wise leaders, out of both arrogance and fear ignored Qui'Gons warning which led to him getting killed. Above all else Dooku is an idealist, and what mattered is that the Jedi order in that moment proved once and for all that it was a lost cause.

Everybody gives the Jedi crap for not believing Force visions, like when Anakin told Yoda someone he knew would die, or when Luke told Yoda his friends would die. In this case, though, I think the Council was wrong not to warn the planet. What would have been the harm in giving them a heads-up about it? "Hey, we had a vision which may or may not come true, about a solar storm that will devastate your planet, you might want to prep for that just in case." I mean, it's the *weather,* there's no scenario where that becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy

In Legends had Maul not been defeated on Naboo in that Theed Palace hanger downward shaft he most likely would of served In a role similar to Asajj And Grievous with Dooku being Sidious second in command afterall Plagueis himself saw Dooku as a insurance apprentice should Sidious not work out in some way while he only saw Maul as a useful talented errand person meaning that Dooku had a midichlorian count that was not as high as Sidious but one higher then Mauls and possibly Plagueis own if not tied or close to it slightly below as well as Dookus IQ level being higher then Mauls and most others aside from maybe Sids And Plagueis yeah.

@MaxMan47 not rly. he was supposed to be the next sith lord, which i think lucas confirmed and i believe him way more than a youtube comment. One movie doesnt define a character you know. And no, i dont think he was going to be the next ventress or grievous. Why? Simply because he is much stronger with the force, too much for just being an assassin. Sidious took him as an apprentice for a reason. Dooku , like anakin, just happened to come along. One big problem for star wars, imo, is that its way to easy to corrupt a jedi. way too much. i wished they toned it down a bit or making a sith coming back to the light.

I disagree massively. Maul was very powerful, much more than say asajj, and still very young and in legends at the time sidious had to drip feed him knowledge cos plagueis was still alive and he had to show that he wasn't training a full on apprentice. Had maul returned from naboo he'd have stayed as the apprentice but acc given an extra 10 yrs of full on sith training for the coming war. Dooku at this point was still very powerful but old and wasn't ever seen as a legit apprentice just a placeholder which also helped cos he was gonna be head of the separatists. Maul would've been the apprentice and dooku would have been the head of the movement and I do think that if Maul had those extra 10 yrs of training he'd surpass dooku and then when the time cane for the end of the war sidious would've had anakin take on Maul to take his place (or potentially discard maul himself so to not take the risk of lsoimg anakin) and discarded dooku just as he did in the regular timeline.

Can't help but wonder sometimes...was Dooku's name just Dooku? He gets called Count Dooku...so is Dooku his surname? Did get called Count Dooku as a Jedi? Or was his first name Count and we've had it wrong this whole time?...has he got like a Madonna thing goin on? Screw it, in my mind now he's called Jeff, Jeff Dooku, they never say his first name cos he's really insecure about it.

😂. They're never super clear about it, but interestingly enough in the canon version it seems to imply that his family name is Serenno, and that Dooku is his given name. However Legends sort of implies that Dooku is in fact his family name, and we never hear his given name.

Both legends and canon have in common that Dooku is sick and tired of Jedi being used by the corrupt Republic. I agree with Dooku on this but I disagree with joining the side of Darth Sidious.

@@therancorbattalion Precisely they could easily left the family being proud of him and kept most of the plot ... because the family was proud of him so they did not try to contact him s that is the Jedi way, when they took him to his birth place he meets with his sister and they reconnect and keep in contact secret from the order and the rest of the family As for his brother you could have hade an dispute or internal power struggle cause the sister to reach out to him and have Dooku feel like he was responsible for his brothers death in addition to his issues with the Order and Republic would push him to return home ... everything else the cannon is at least as good or in places even better than legends which does not happen often

@@Bean-yu6ty In legends his family was basically a non entity all we had was his parents were proud of his force abilities and gave him to the Jedi willingly seeing it as an honor and later he reclaims his Title after the death of his Brother, while his Sister-in-law and nephew went to self imposed exile on Alderan. there is no indication he was a tyrant or anything like that ... In Legends the focus and onus is solely on Doku his choices and his path that leads him to become a Sith I dont mind expanding on them I just dont like the route they went with it cannon ... Unlike Legend its almost like Disney canon is implying that it was inevitable, since his father was bad and his brother was evil ...
