No Wrong The portal isnt a knife It doesn't slice his arm off, it puts one of his hands in one location and the rest of his body in a separate location, therefore it doesn't matter how indestructible his skin is, if his body parts are in two separate locations and there is nothing that is connecting them, it is no longer attached to him therefore it has been "cut" off without any literal cutting/slicing Edit: Please read what I have said in the comments before commenting because I have explained portal, teleportation etc in more detail. So that extra information may answer you question

Well you could also view the portal as an energy ring/ laso. When closing in, it can deal damage just as if you were stuck in-between an automatically operating door. With Strange, it might be that the energy isn't enough to close the portal around Thanos' arm. That is, his skin is so durable that it would let the portal close shut therefore, it may break the portal/ energy ring.

@ Where's My Bannana 23 Agreed, I think the real reason was explained by the scene where he punched the mirror dimension gate-thingy. That scene was sort of a proof that "portal" kind of attacks are useless against him, probably because he had many stones at that point. If you compare the two objects that is used for openning protals in the movie: sling ring and space stone, it only makes sense that stone overpowers the ring and renders it useless.

Yeah this is a silly video. Magic portals aren't exactly steel or iron or whatever hahaha. I would just imagine it being Thanos having to purposefully put his arm into a portal. Which i'm sure he's smart enough not to try. Dr Strange cant just create a portal halfway up his arm, then close it. So portal cant cut it... If thanos puts his arm in portal, his arm is physically somewhere else, when the portal closes. So what happens? Does the portal slides off of the thanos arm? Does portal make new thanos where his arm went? If skin is undestructable, how did tony damage it? Why all the scars? Why armor? Why prevent loki from trying to stab him in the neck? How did thors hammer penetrate him? The point of his skin being indestructable as the reason why strange didnt cut his arm off just makes no sense.

Stormbreaker used the bifrost to enter into Thanos' internal organs perhaps? I mean it's just a plothole. Without plotholes there would be no real adventures. Edit: The Russo's are known liars. It's pretty easy for the architect of fantasy to go back and say anything in hindsight. It wasn't really covered in the film so it can't exactly be refuted. Stormbreaker did it though. I bet the Russo's would just shrug and grin at this. Ryan vetter Thanos is way smarter than literally everyone there, he saw that if he told star Lord about gamoras death then he would get angry and hit him. If the others let go it frees Thanos up to attack , if they let star Lord hit him more he would have woken up and used his full strength. I'm sure even if Spider-Man got it off he would have used his free arm to escape then if like the Russos say Thanos is stronger than hulk he can catch Spider-Man with ease as he is escaping. Bruh ur wrong, it’s more like this. Dr.strange’s portal opens a hole on the space fiber, if he closes it, the space fiber fixes it’s hole. So basically the way Wong cuts Obsidian’s arm off is by borrowing the energy from the space fiber. However, because Thanos has the space stone,therefore he controls the space fiber. That’s why it wouldn’t work.

That pretty much only applies to moments Star-Lord and Thor mess up, but Dr. Strange did not mess up. He say millions of possible futures, and not one where portals worked. As for the other two ways they could've won, there was always the chance Thanos would not get pinned, Thor didn't survive the forge, and Thanos acquires the stones much faster and what played out was the best possible scenario. Thor also never intended to kill Thanos quickly, so the few times he would even get the chance to kill Thanos in one hit would be wasted no matter what.

Well Thanos with 6 stones can do everything basically, but the gauntlet is still a separate object from his body and so he has to rely on his reflexes in order to use its powers. For example, he can use the gauntlet in order to become hyper fast, but before doing that he has to think about it and send this idea to the gauntlet through his nervous system....this takes a while even if just milliseconds. So if Dr. strange manages to create a portal and then closes it before Thanos realize it... the Titan would be down for good.

It would be fair to say invincible to all normal attacks. He is Invincible to damage the way that the 6 in armor of a battleship is Invincible to damage. Attacks that are below a certain power level don't even leave a scratch. But you can still Pierce a battleships armor. So, I think Thanos skin is less tough then vibranium but it's still pretty darn invincible.

Like you said, by opening a portal, his arm(at least a portion of it) would be separated from his body, literally due to the portal being a doorway to 2 different places, his arm would be in one place while his body is in another thus severing his arm. Not a single being who is made of flesh and blood could withstand that.

Well, two problems. One: Gamora knows Thanos and what will kill him and chose a knife to the heart. Two: The portal does not cut through the arm when it closes, the damage we saw on the Obsidian Hulk's arm (Or what ever his name is for the movie) was done by the energy opening the portal after separation. If Dr. Strange had put a portal over Thanos' arm and closed it, Thanos would have been in two places at once and his arm would be separated at the molecular level. How ever tough he is, his atoms bonds are still only as strong as the strong nuclear force. Now, you could have argued that once he had 5 stones, he his natural defenses were augmented to rediculous proportions. Hence why he was so much harder to damage by that point and also why he was able to counter all Dr. Strange's magic and so a portal might not have been enough to break the infinity magic already protecting him at that time. But in the end it really boils down to, super powerful beings are just super powerful.

Fred Kibler That is a great angle to see it from. He does have some experience with suffering the loss (even if temporary) of his hands and that may have influence on his willingness to do the same to another. He also may very well have seen so far into the future to know that any defeat of Thanos on Titan doesn't stop the overall problem. Thanos has been planning this all of Gamora's life at least, so he prolly had contengency on top of contengency for any misstep along the way. I mean he knew he would need something to love to get the soul stone, but he clearly didn't realize he would have to sacrifice that thing. Maybe the one win that Dr. Strange saw was one where they don't defeat Thanos, but rather change his mind so he stops his quest and undoes the damage.

Alright. Gonna take a crack at this one because I wondered the same thing. 1. If the portals could be opened with an object already within the diameter then they would be an invincible weapon because the opening would also cause a "slicing" action: The point of opening would start in the middle and radiate outwards. You would never need to close the portal to achieve the slice because opening it would be the initial slicing action. Thus you could simply open a portal within the neck or heart of any enemy and this action would be the overpowered catch all for defeating any enemy. 2. Thus, we have to conclude that the object must enter the portal before it can be "sliced" by this portal that, as one commenter already said, has zero thickness and should effectively be able to cut anything no matter how tough or resilient it is... diamond, titanium, whatever. This means that you have to get the object to go into the portal to achieve the detachment via closing the portal. My conclusion: Thanos is a capable character and even if Dr. Strange opened the portal in front of his fist mid-punch, Thanos would likely react quickly by distorting reality and the portal out of existence just like he uses several similar tricks when he fights Dr. Strange one on one. Also, it kinda seems as thought the portals may have a somewhat limited radius from the caster. It would be interesting to see the full distance from the caster that a portal can be opened as well as the maximum diameter that the caster could open it to. But in all honesty, I think they realize that this is basically any easy out and a ridiculously overpowered move, Dr. Strange could very possibly pull it off, and that this must simply be plot armor. Kinda like when you have a D&D character who figures out that he can do this or that thing and the DM has to protect the game from breaking.
