I joined the military on 09/01/01, so I could get the MGI Bill. I was raped on my third deployment to propaganda, had my reports covered up with a bad paper discharge (OTH) and lost the Veterans benefits I earned. My untreated PTSD led to my suicide attempt, which I survived with a traumatic brain injury to complicate the mental illness. I whole-heartedly regret my service and the only thing I got out of it was psychiatric disorders and brain damage. My serial rapist was never investigated, got his honorable discharge, and now works with Amtrak in l.a. Glad you got the education assistance you are owed. I wish I wasn't robbed of mine. I’m 53 and got a guitar teacher and started getting weekly lessons 4.5 years ago. I have arthritis and tendinitis. With standard tuning, I get terrible inflammation. I read about Toni Iommi and was inspired by his struggles and had my local guitar shop set up my Solar GC1.6 to C# standard, and I use Earnie Ball custom gauge strings (.10-.48) and I can play without pain. I play all songs in standard tuning and Eb tuning in C# standard. I play drop D tuning songs at Eb tuning with the low E tuned to C#. I use custom Earnie Ball strings, .9-.46 for that guitar, but replace the .46 string with a single .48 gauge string. That makes it possible for me to play.

Same. Learned a lot in standard and drop d…once I messed around in c# it opened up something in the brain. Same thing happened in the good ol metalcore days when drop c was the go-to tuning, and I kind of fell into the trap of everything I wrote during that time landing in the same c major sounding scale. Again, went another half step down to drop b and it opened up something in the brain. For some reason I can never explain, those half steps always hit different for me personally and I wrote better riffs. Anytime I touch a guitar I’ve never held, I test it first in drop c#, then in drop b to see if I jive with it.

I agree with the clarity statement. E standard to C# is generally where I'll tune. Rarely to C. C is where things start to sound a bit muddy. B, A... forget about it. They simply start sounding really muddy and are getting too much in the bass range.
@paulauten19455 ай бұрын
Any die hard Eddie Van Halen fan knows this lol BIG part of why he tuned-ish to E flat but tempered for his strong grip and brutal playing. The half step down really opens up the sound of an electric guitar, lower notes vibrate more and if you use thicker gauge strings you get a much fuller tone with more texture. I’ve notice guitars (doesn’t matter what brand and i’ve tested this on dozens of guitars in my studio) tuned to this stay in tune longer than standard tuning. And lastly, the tension on the strings IS lower which equates more playability

I looooooove drop C#. I'd go so far as to say it's the tuning I've felt most creative in for the last few years. In general - I've come to accept I'm happiest on a guitar somewhere between drop C and E standard, and B standard on a 7 string. Most of the bands that really had a big impact on how I view rhythm guitar are in that zone. My go-to writing tends to hop between kinda thrashy/death metal riffing, big moody chords, or black metal-ish tremolo picking and chords, none of which I think works as well in very low tunings.

Like you mentioned I think of theory on the guitar as either in standard tuning or drop D, but I either tune the whole guitar down to C standard (every string down 2 steps) or in drop C (CGCFAD) for 6 string guitars. 7 strings will be down a whole step to A and for 8 strings I use the Abasi tuning of the 8th string down to E. I’ve just been learning piano and playing synths over the last year and I’ve settled on these because it’s kind of the best of both worlds to apply playing stuff going back and forth playing things on guitar or piano and knowing notes/what key or scale I’m in, easier transposing etc.

I largely agree. The super low stuff gets way too wall of sound, in a bad way. Palm muting a power chord on a downtuned 8 string sounds like chugging radio static. Not that you can't get a good sound single note, or that I dislike all super low stuff, but I understand your points.

drop C# and drop C feels like home, i can play most of my fav songs since they are in drop C# and drop C and now all of my own composition is in drop C#

I wish I used my GI bill on something useful like learning music, instead I got a AA in General Ed and just 8 classes shy of a BA in Criminal Justice. I’m a disabled veteran and don’t work so all the education is wasted. At least I now use my time learning to play. Love your videos.

Around the Fur is all but 2 songs in Drop C#, so that's what gravitates me towards it and it turned out to be something that has clicked with me.

Drop C# is the best and we use it in our band. It's the best middle ground between Drop D (where I come from) and Drop C (where our lead guitarist comes from). It's such a great sound.
