The difficulty in the tone-discussion boils down to it being difficult to sell to a friend as a concept of humor+worldbuilding+friend dynamics+drama+horror. Something like Frieren is easy, it's slowburn emotional drama. Dungeon Meshi is so much more, and that is what makes it, well, so MUCH more than shows like Frieren. As each element of it begins being developed more and more they work together better and better until you reach a perfect balance of humor+drama+horror and all the other amazing ingredients of this hot pot.

For me with the Sensi flashback episodes one thing that got me was how real senshi's expressions and actions were when they go to eat the griffin. Its that level of horror of "once I finally eat this I might know the truth" that made that episode so tense for me cuz you can understand (maybe not to his extent) that level of horrible fascination. The possibility of answering that question is right there, but once you have the answer, any part of you that can hope for the answer you'd prefer is gone. I loved that whole section

Finally, someone who mentions Dungeon Meshi's fantastic character writing. The worldbuilding and ecosystem are great no doubt about that, but what I appreciate about Dungeon Meshi is how a seemingly one-note characters are unveiled to have so much more depth than people realize, done so with meticulous subtle writing.

One thing I like about Laos and his sister is that you can see that they both have the same weirdness, it's just that people don't notice it as much with her. Which is legitimately something that happens in real life with people on the autism spectrum.

The ongoing joke is that Laios is not a very good leader. He can't read people, he forgets faces and names. He is not very good at holding groups together. This is a very small group he leads. Most of them hang on despite of Laios.

The show is pretty amazing, but the growing fandom around placing mental illnesses or ASD because of certain habits or character traits just makes me feel sad. As with anything in terms of how characters are presented or represented, the author's word is law if they are not being coerced. Keep in mind Netflix and Crunchyroll uses westerners for localization efforts so it may be possible they are flavoring the anime with political seasoning that the "localizers" prefer rather than what the author of the manga imagined.
