@jbird4478 Жыл бұрын
The name Peter is also mostly popular among more posh families in the Netherlands (what we call "kak"). It isn't just sexism, but also a matter of generational wealth.
@GwainSagaFanChannel Жыл бұрын
I am dutch and I was not even aware of this but I suppose poshy dutch people are heavily disliked in the netherlands especially if they think they better than the supposed ordinary folk
@travcollier Жыл бұрын
@@GwainSagaFanChannel Dutch history seems interesting on that too. The whole "Protestant work ethic" thing combined with a highly legal/contract oriented system led to many folks being quite "business"/profit motivated. But at the same time, ostentatious displays of wealth or privilege are also traditionally seen as signs of poor character/morals. That contradiction (or built-in balance) led the Dutch to be extremely productive and influential culturally. The whole modern "western world" is pretty Dutch in several ways.
@Will-bo7kg Жыл бұрын
@@travcollier that seeming contradiction comes from Calvinism, which was one of the older Protestant sects being second to Lutherism my friend. It being quite popular in the Northern European merchant classes as it was all about delayed gratification (surfering today for a greater tomorrow), which makes sense for the Netherlands at that time. It being a small nation with limited natural advantages (such as resources, manpower, geographic defenses and etc) on the turbulent contenant.
@Will-bo7kg Жыл бұрын
I see you point but to undo that would be strike at what made the Dutch an unlikely success. That of delayed gratification which they inherited from Calvinism, which insists on surfering in the present for a better future. This naturally leads to generational wealth since children inherit the fortune of their ancestors but importantly keep the values needed to maintain/grow it unlike other cultures in the world today. This being particularly the case since many families with fortunes have a single heir rather than dividing it up. However removing such an attitude, which is what is required to get rid of generational wealth, would also make Dutch people far more individualist, short sighted and potentially hedonistic. Caring not for anything outside themselves, essentially transforming into their stereotype of the American 😂.

I'm Dutch and I hadn't heard of this protest. The media have been giving a lot of attention to the fact that there are few women at the top, though, and "Den Haag" (the government) is working on quota for having x amount of women at high positions. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for equal chances... which is why I am against such quota. Equal *chances* ≠ equal *representation* . Quota force companies to hire/promote candidates based upon (in this case) their gender, which is textbook sexism, because sexism works both ways. Yes, we should adress the issue, but reversing sexism doesn't solve sexism. Now, about the name Peter in The Netherlands: it is still considered a very standard name, which is why I had no idea it was losing popularity, but that may also be the exact reason for its decline in populatity. I used to have a stepfather named Peter. Fun guy.

I have noticed a good majority of my male superiors in various work places are called Mike, or Michael. I do appreciate that most of the places I have chosen to join have women in positions of power. I have found that if my work-place has a man in power, typically a middle class white man, I don't receive fair treatment there, and the work environment can be toxic. 2 of my favorite jobs so far had women in power, which allowed for me to be heard more often in the work place. This helped me with training new employees and participating in larger team tasks with out being belittled or ignored. I think because of this, I will continue to try to only apply for places that have women and others in a the social minority in charge. I don't have time to waste at a company with sexism or other forms of idiotic bigotry. My time is valuable. I'd rather have the ability to grow and learn in a workplace than just be a pretty face at a desk with no room for advancement. I applaud these people for taking a stand!

Women are underrepresented as CEOs? Okay, but there are many professions, where women also are underrepresented and very women even want that job. Construction worker, Waste canal cleaner and even software developer are exampes of this.
@deldarel Жыл бұрын
Software developer here. In college it was quite a hostile environment to women. I've seen many women as capable as the more capable men be belittled and objectified by students and teachers alike, and also weren't taken as seriously. When skill was equal, dropout rates were higher here. It's really important that we change this. With women in leadership positions in unis or companies women will actually be listened to by women in the position to make a change. So I'm completely on board. We need women in programming down the entire stack. I don't speak for the other jobs because I have no experience with them, but I imagine it's similar there: more women at the worker level requires more women in leadership positions too. More women all down the stack so female workers don't get harassed or ignored out of the field.

Mongolia introduced a law that people had to have a surname, and it was reported that a lot were announcing that many of them planned to take Genghis Khan’s name. I think this was categorised as a “protest”, but considering that he’s viewed positively in Mongolia, I don’t think it was seen as a deliberate act of being ridiculous.

My spouse is from Mongolia, and I'm sorry to say I am not aware of anything like this. How I understand it works is, your surname is simply your father's given name. As for Chinggis Han's given name, Temujin, there are numerous Mongolians with that given name. Not out of any kind of protest, but likely in respect or hoping some of his ambitious qualities reflect in the person being named. I guess you could think of it similarly to naming someone Alex, like Alexander the Great. I'm not sure if it's related to the historical figure Bat Han (we might write it Batu Khan) or not, but Bat is also a common given name prefix there. I hope this is helpful!

Why > What ... One data point does not identify a structural bias that needs fixing. I'm not saying it's not there or that it doesn't need fixing if it is. I'm saying you need a lot more information before making the determination that "there are too few women CEOs and we need more." The question is /why/ are there so few women proportionally? Are there women who want to be CEOs and are qualified but aren't able to achieve it? Are there actual differences between the Dutch men and women in the workforce that might explain the difference? You simply cannot tell a story with one data point.
