I fell in love with the 14x8 size of drums when I was in high school. This band came through town and the drummer was rocking this Ayotte kit (back when Ray was still making them) and he had with it a 14x8 snare in maple. It was the first time I'd ever seen/heard one, and it was the best sounding snare I'd ever heard in my life. I knew at that point, I needed one. Fast forward a bunch of years... Vinnie Paul releases a signature snare drum with Pearl, snakeskin wrap, spiked tube lugs, 14x8. It was the first one to hit shelves in Canada, I bought it that day. It's been one of my main drums ever since, even got it signed by Vinnie himself. Love it at all tunings... they are just amazing drums. Congrats on your 14x8! Just gorgeous drum sound and look.

I commissioned a 14"×7.5" Mahogany/Poplar w/ Birdseye Maple Hoops from VIRTUE Drums in my hometown of Jackson, MI. It was purpose-built to be a beefy, resonant snom (topside full roundover, thin 5-ply shell, lightweight hardware), but it's proven to be the most versatile snare drum I've ever played. I've obvs used it as a snom and for fat an 80s snare, but it kills mid-70s dead sounds, high-pitched funk tunings, aggressive & ringy hard rock/metal vibes, and everything in between. I've played it in basements, studios, coffee shops, churches of all sizes, clubs, concert halls, and hockey arenas. At any volume, every note is articulate and well-defined, regardless of how wet or dry the room is. It holds a tune whether it's 90°F with 100% humidity or just came out of a trailer that drove through through a -5°F deep freeze. I know it's [barely] not a 14"×8" snare, but it's proven time and time again to be not just the most versatile and reliable snare drum I own, but the most versatile and reliable _instrument_ I own. Definitely get one if you can. If you have the financial means, check out VIRTUE. You will walk away with the best investment you ever made in your career. Jeff will set you up masterfully. If you check em out, tell him Conor said hey. ;)

I have a 14x8 too. I think the biggest benefit is that it projects in any range. Cranked snares choke and lose projection and then the super low tuning loses projection because the heads are too loose to vibrate. Where the 8" depth snare moves soooo much air that it doesnt lose projection when cranked or when super loose(low). So any tuning range will still cut in the mix with it like theyre all the sweet spot.
