Everyone tries to understand things in straight linear lines. It's good that someone is nerding out on shot form whilst considering true overall biomechanics. Centre of mass, momentum, ergonomics, acceleration of motion etc....... It's the same when you hear old school idiots talking about having both of your feet, hips and shoulders square to the basket. You might go up like that but it changes in the air and you don't release or land that way by any means.

I like you videos explaining the shooting techniques. Regarding the dipping, I think coach rock from Ilikebasketballtv has a point. He mentioned that think of it as a shooting path instead of shooting form. From 7:18 in your video, klay did not dip the ball, that's because all his shots start from the same position. All his shots follow the same path. If he catches the ball high, he will dip the ball. Otherwise, he will not need to dip it.

Yeah it is pretty ridiculous to ask a player to do that... Monster athletes might have less negative effects from it i suppose. An excessive dip either with upper or lower body wouldn't be ideal, but no dip at all is simply not natural for human bodies. Makes things too jerky.
@loverofhumanity2 жыл бұрын
exactly if you look at all his examples, there's a dip but the dip is so inexcessive that you wouldn't even tell its there at game speed. I think that's what players are talking about. I think you naturally have a dip when you shoot no matter what but its almost as if in your mind you should be thinking to get into shooter C position as fast as possible from that small dip and knee bend position. Alot of times people misinterprate the dip and begin to overemphasis or exaggerate it which slows it down significantly. The reality is in game speed unless your good at dribbling off screens or move around enough, its impossible to get your shot off over defenders if you have an excessive dip.

I knew this from Shotmechanics. In Steph defense, he said a little of of dip is ok. I am 100% for dip There's no need for long explanation, the dip works because it's a natural rhythm. We bend our hips and legs, the hands naturally follow. If we bend and the hands stay there, it's going against our natural flow so it goes against our natural human rhythm. Try bending bend and see if you can keep your hands the same place. Its unnatural

This is great content. I always thought there was something wrong when I was taught to not dip the ball. It's like, if you're trying to throw a baseball, you need to cock back your arm so you have more space to swing through, giving yourself more power and control over the ball's flight path. So it should be the same for basketball shots, right? It's like not pressing a spring down and expecting it to jump off the ground on its own.
@GreenFuryGaming6 жыл бұрын
when training a basketball players, to shoot, there is 2 methods, one is called "form shooting" and other is called "game shooting" , form shooting is nothing like game shooting, it helps with mechanics and rhythm. game shooting is...game shooting xD. i think this will help you to dive deeper into shooting.

Whatever happened to the concept of "Triple Threat"? If your shot starts above your shoulders, you can't dribble and you limit your passing possibilities... BUT... if your shot starts at hip level and you start your shot, if the defender rushes you, it's easy to just fake and dribble around them. Even if you don't have your dribble, you can do a give and go. The main advantage to shooting from the hip isn't even the advantages of the shot itself (Though such advantages are many). The REAL main advantage is that you can keep your defender honest. If the defender manages to read your shot and get under the ball, you're screwed. You have to pivot away from the hoop to protect the ball and just pray you find an available passing option. If your defender reads your shot when the ball is still low, you can burn them if they get too close... or draw a shooting foul.
@theartofcompetition59654 жыл бұрын
what your saying is totally true. but in terms of quick release catching it right at your forehead with legs loaded would be the fastest release and you wouldnt want to get into triple threat assuming your in range for that kind of shot
@classyassmothafucka88904 жыл бұрын
@@theartofcompetition5965 That is true of shots in the paint, but not of 3point shooting. Several reasons- 1. Reduces your range. Even if you're an NBA player who can physically do a set shot from 3, it gets harder and harder just a few feet out from the 3. The range of motion is about half that of a regular shot so you ARE giving up range by doing this 2. Fastest shot within reason. If you are already locked and loaded before the shot, the pass going into the shot is going to alter your shot. Unless you've only got .3 to shoot, this is a terrible tradeoff. 3. Shooting is about HABIT... and if you get in the habit of going straight into your shot, your man is simply going to NOT respect your drive (as he shouldn't). If you TRY to go from a set shot to a drive, you're just gonna get stripped anyway. 4. If you think about putting up a shot and decide you're off-balance, you now have the ball above your shoulders... and this is exactly where a guard does NOT want the ball. This makes it very difficult to dribble or pass out of the little corner you just locked yourself in... not to mention, you're on your heels now from the near shot attempt.

Technically the dip slows your shot. However, when you are normally going to shoot, you either take a 1-2 step, hop, or are dribbling which results the dip being covered up by other movements such as the 1-2 step, the hop, or a dribble. This is an example of having time but not wanting to use it. For instance, assume you were going to work. Then you wanted to stop at an ice cream parlor but you would be late. Then, your boss extends the time just long enough for you to get ice cream but not be late. Not a good analogy but you understand the point: Yes, the dip slows your shot but you have time to do it. The no-dippers are like the guys who don't get ice cream. The dippers are better because they get the ice cream and aren't late.

@JaviHuertasBball6 жыл бұрын
hi! you probably need more time to your new memory muscle. When you practice your new good shot with good arc you should focus on your legs because a very big % of memory muscle is in your legs an that afect to your entire shot. i learnt this from a neuroscientific teacher. it is realy important dont think when you realese the ball but you can adjust after and before and think what you need in your mechanics. when you really practice a lot gradually you shoud forget the bad habits in your shots.

Power is the ability to generate force quickly. Greater power equals a higher jump, a faster bat, a quicker shot. A crucial mechanism at work when generating power is the Stretch Shortening Cycle. It is also known as countermovement or pre-stretch. If a concentric contraction is started from a static position - by waiting "with the legs loaded" for example - explosiveness is lost. The result would be a slower shot, with reduced effective range. Check out this explanation/demonstration from Dr. David Brehm at the School of Human Kinetics & Recreation, Memorial University (CAN): kzbin.info/www/bejne/qWKVdJWYadGYrqM

just use whatever form works for you, my dad's a coach i mean good fundamentals at first , help you know what to do , but if you find something works better, try it for a while... i used to never miss shots. got MVP of a few camps when i was a kid. i wish i could have done something with bball for a living but only a 5foot8 white nigga lol.

Dip is just a way for the player to get their hand placement on the ball correctly
