I was at a Starbucks two years ago buying coffee for my wife and me and when it came time to pay, I realized I'd left my wallet in our hotel room. So I told the woman taking the order what happened, at which point I heard a voice behind me say, "Hey man, I'll pay for your coffee, no worries." I turned around and there was Keanu, who was next in line behind me. I did the typical refusal etiquette -- telling him how nice it was for him to offer, but he didn't need to do that, etc., etc. Of course he was having none of it, insisting that it would be his pleasure to pay and practically pushing me out of the way before I could object further. My wife is a huge fan of his so when I asked him if he'd take a picture with her, he didn't hesitate. One of the nicest people -- celebrity or not -- I've ever met.

I gravitate to Keanu because of all the genuinely tough moments he’s had in his life. His sisters cancer, a child born to stillbirth, and losing his love interest in a car accident. Those second two happening within like 2 years of each other. Where most of us would absolutely internalize that in a resentful, hateful manner, for life. Keanu did the opposite. And chose to turn that pain into success, and to go further and share that success. I’ll never stop respecting him for that.
