People have literally always judged you by your appearance and "stuff". When it was the 80s, it was owning certain brands and having a fancy car or boat, etc. When it was the 60s, it was the same. It may not have been brand specific, but it was still important to have the "right" clothes and a tv. In the 1930s, it was if you had a radio, and people still cared about their appearances. This is not unique to your generation. I know it's hard to not care if other people judge you when you're a teenager. I agree with him when he says that we should be thinking realistically and even introspectively because “do the material things make you happy?” is a sentence that we should all ask ourselves several times in different stages of our lives. But, I think “50 items and under” is too drastic. I also think all of his money on his person and not having health insurance is TOO scary for me because my family always has something wrong with them medically (seizures, cancer, high blood pressure, traumatic brain injury, etc). He’s slightly insane to do this but he’s also enlightened to a point because he’s looking inside of himself to find his happiness. Edit: I personally believe that material objects and money don’t MAKE you happy but it helps you get there. It provides opportunities that you wouldn’t get if you didn’t have a certain material object or money.

joking aside. the more you travel by air, whether for work or leisure... the more you get detached from the non-essential things and one bag travel becomes a necessary convenience. one thing i've noticed is the bulk of what's inside are clothes. so if you can stick with classic styles and stay away from ever changing trends, then a "wardrobe capsule" can drastically pare down what you bring and also result in saving a good amount of cash. for starters, look up "project 333".

The Stoics said that living like Diogenes the Cynics is the short path for virtue or a good life. Although the Stoics weren't as extreme as the Cynics, they still admired the courage the Cynics took to live deliberately in an extreme poverty or like a dog basically. We the common people can also see the person in the video and the other extreme minimalists with an awe and take inspiration from them to throw and to change some unnecessary goods and habits that we have. People living in extreme are there to be ideals that perhaps we will never emulate, but they are for us to learn. Cheers!

We sold our house but our new house wasn't ready, so we moved into my SILs basement apartment in 2008. Before we moved I got rid of about 98% of my possessions. I had read a book about downsizing and realized I was shopping "emotionally" if that makes sense. So I stopped. Now, over a decade later I have replaced~nothing. Not a thing. Everything I got rid of was superfluous. The one thing that I did agonize over was my cookbooks. I had over 350 cookbooks. My mum was a chef and I'm a darn fine cook so I started collecting cookbooks. I read them like novels. I loved them. But~I hadn't touched most of them for years. Now~if only my husband would do the same. If I weren't around I swear he'd be a hoarder! Our "spare" room is literally full to the doors with "stuff". You can imagine the discussions we have about that! We are seniors and I've explained that if he dies before me and leaves me with that mess? I'll dig him up and kill him again! Soooo frustrating. 😤

Im really surprised at the amount of hate and mockery Im seeing in response to this vid. It's like people are scared he's trying to take their stuff away instead of being inspired by someone trying to show us stuff isnt as important as we think. He even says he doesnt think his lifestyle would work for everyone. I dont know if everyone is just that jaded or what's going on.

Cannot help wondering if a lot more folks would be happier with a nomadic way of life. Not being stuck in the same place, job and traveling. Oh well, guess we'll never know....

Ok but if he doesn't have any insurance what would he do if he got sick? I just had surgery that would've cost me $75,000 but with my insurance through work was $1000.

My question. We live on the bare minimum. How do you handle retirement?

It kind of doesn't really matter how much you have or don't have. As long as you enjoy what you have.

in a couple of years he will find out that he shouldn't have thrown away his childhood memories. and if they are stored at his mom or whatever then that still counts as possessions.

Great Video, Rob! When I was a child in the 60s, I had a book entitled "Alberic the Wise," illustrated by Domenico Gnoli ( you must have the Gnoli illustrations to get the vibe). You are for me like that childhood character come to life. Cheers!
