I can imagine how great this makes him feel. I used to do this when i was travelling in europe. To save on flight cost, all that I need fits into a cabin size bag. I only have 3 sets of clothes, use and wash and repeat. I was surprised that I could live on only those stuff in my small bag for 2 months. I feel good about it.

You would be surprised how many of us wish we could do this. My father had a friend who literally quit medicine a month or two before they were supposed to finish surgical residency, and he left everything and basically went to live on the beach and never looked back. Decades later my father ran into him and he was still living that life and he asked him is he was happy and if he thought he made the right decision and he was like yeah. I can tell you to this day I know my father would rather have spent his life painting than doing medicine. Enjoy your life man. 👍

I mean that’s great if to that guy this is freedom for him and it makes him happy but this definitely isn’t for everyone and wouldn’t make everyone happy and/or feel free. I don’t have a lot of stuff by any means. I grew up with hoarders and I’m actually pretty good at donating things that aren’t of use to me. That said I have what may seem like trivial things to most that bring me happiness and joy so I keep it around. Once it doesn’t I’ll get rid of it but for now they stay. My point is to say to each there own.
@paincreatesfame
@paincreatesfame 4 жыл бұрын
This!!! Like I definitely agree that people shouldn’t just have a crap ton of stuff but some people have things that just mean a lot to them or they need lots of things for medical reasons or other reasons and not everyone can live so light. It’s good to have less but “less” is different for everyone and that less wont always make people happy.
@TheGong00zler

To each their own can only go up to some extent. His lifestyle wasn’t inspired by living freely & happily- it was inspired by necessity (becoming educated about how damaging his lifestyle was), & that drove him to change. We are all benefitting from his extreme lifestyle (he is producing minimal waste & pollution). If we keep choosing to live ‘to each their own’; if we keep living as we are- it will not be sustained by the earth.

I Wish I could have a mindset like Robert, these days as a teen people judge you by your clothes, cars, bags, phones it's really hard to be happy with what you have
@lachlannae
@lachlannae 4 жыл бұрын
People have literally always judged you by your appearance and "stuff". When it was the 80s, it was owning certain brands and having a fancy car or boat, etc. When it was the 60s, it was the same. It may not have been brand specific, but it was still important to have the "right" clothes and a tv. In the 1930s, it was if you had a radio, and people still cared about their appearances. This is not unique to your generation. I know it's hard to not care if other people judge you when you're a teenager. But you can get to the point of just not caring and realizing what shallow people they sadly are that do. That part is your choice. It may not feel like a choice, but it is.

joking aside. the more you travel by air, whether for work or leisure... the more you get detached from the non-essential things and one bag travel becomes a necessary convenience. one thing i've noticed is the bulk of what's inside are clothes. so if you can stick with classic styles and stay away from ever changing trends, then a "wardrobe capsule" can drastically pare down what you bring and also result in saving a good amount of cash. for starters, look up "project 333".

I agree with him when he says that we should be thinking realistically and even introspectively because “do the material things make you happy?” is a sentence that we should all ask ourselves several times in different stages of our lives. But, I think “50 items and under” is too drastic. I also think all of his money on his person and not having health insurance is TOO scary for me because my family always has something wrong with them medically (seizures, cancer, high blood pressure, traumatic brain injury, etc). He’s slightly insane to do this but he’s also enlightened to a point because he’s looking inside of himself to find his happiness. Edit: I personally believe that material objects and money don’t MAKE you happy but it helps you get there. It provides opportunities that you wouldn’t get if you didn’t have a certain material object or money.

You will feel more free with less of all the material burden 😌. So many people wonder how I could travel or similar things (because no financial support from parents etc.): I just kept some things simpler (but also not like him 😄). While others almost buy the drug store empty, I have one instead of 10 shower gels, instead of spending 35€ getting druck in one day I rather had a houseparty or did other great activities. Many people act so wrong when it comes to money. I know people who had actually more than I had but they had nothing mid month. Unbelievable for me 😟 (at least if you don’t have kids, I couldn’t adjudicate on that case).

Clothes, technology, identification, money, hygiene supplies are what he has. I have downsized as much as possible, but still have bedding, clothing, records, photographs, office supplies, cooking and drinking supplies, some religious items, sewing and crochet supplies, some medicines, toiletries, makeup, money, various identification, cards, and a book. I have categorized these into eight bags/satchels and cannot figure out how to make it smaller and still function, yet I hunger to, as if making it even simpler will set me free from confusion and the stress tied to what I own. I grow less capable of thinking clearly, and need for things to be simple in order to manage.

5:50 I think he meant that the pot is used for cooking, as a pot, and a to-go container all in one. The video counts them all as individual items.

We sold our house but our new house wasn't ready, so we moved into my SILs basement apartment in 2008. Before we moved I got rid of about 98% of my possessions. I had read a book about downsizing and realized I was shopping "emotionally" if that makes sense. So I stopped. Now, over a decade later I have replaced~nothing. Not a thing. Everything I got rid of was superfluous. The one thing that I did agonize over was my cookbooks. I had over 350 cookbooks. My mum was a chef and I'm a darn fine cook so I started collecting cookbooks. I read them like novels. I loved them. But~I hadn't touched most of them for years. Now~if only my husband would do the same. If I weren't around I swear he'd be a hoarder! Our "spare" room is literally full to the doors with "stuff". You can imagine the discussions we have about that! We are seniors and I've explained that if he dies before me and leaves me with that mess? I'll dig him up and kill him again! Soooo frustrating. 😤

Cannot help wondering if a lot more folks would be happier with a nomadic way of life. Not being stuck in the same place, job and traveling. Oh well, guess we'll never know....

I would do anything to live like this but being young makes it so much harder. Worrying about school and becoming successful in life is so much pressure. Leaving all material possessions behind and living a more primitive life seems so much more enjoyable to me.

Bro, i also have drastically decreased buying non food items. Now basically using what i had already bought. The things produced used alot of slavery. Now since i have drastically reduced consumption, and am planting food seeds and uprooting poisonous plants on public land, my financial expenditure decreased greatly to having attained financial freedom given the money in my bank now.

The Stoics said that living like Diogenes the Cynics is the short path for virtue or a good life. Although the Stoics weren't as extreme as the Cynics, they still admired the courage the Cynics took to live deliberately in an extreme poverty or like a dog basically. We the common people can also see the person in the video and the other extreme minimalists with an awe and take inspiration from them to throw and to change some unnecessary goods and habits that we have. People living in extreme are there to be ideals that perhaps we will never emulate, but they are for us to learn. Cheers!

Great Video, Rob! When I was a child in the 60s, I had a book entitled "Alberic the Wise," illustrated by Domenico Gnoli ( you must have the Gnoli illustrations to get the vibe). You are for me like that childhood character come to life. Cheers!
