Why Financial Freedom is Slavery

Like anything, the more you chase something, the more that chaser defines your life. You want to be free from this deception, cling to a meaningful life of serving Christ, and not a slave to the idea that one day you'll finally be "free". Freedom comes from within, it is not a byproduct of money, power, or status.

financial success is not freedom, it is entrapment and its slavery before reaching financial success, ive been telling myself this "No matter where i look, im a slave, we are slaves to money, food, pleasure, hobbies, the government, our jobs, our bosses, our spouses, our economy and war, our government, a slave to our very own mortal fesh having to tolerate this existence, but there is only one direction im ok being enslaved to, is god. Choose wisely who you want to be your master. Mine is God, Lord Jesus Christ." the art of letting go, was origin with Christ and God, letting go of the world, and holding onto Christ.

Financial freedom is a cultural buzzword, and I agree that the prosperity gospel is to be avoided. While it's healthy and responsible to stay out of debt, it's always a mistake for the believer to count on finances to save. Count on the Lord, whether you are rich or poor.

Financial freedom is about getting out of and staying out of debt. It’s about living on less than what you make. This allows you to focus on God and family. It’s not about getting rich and having everything you want. Financial freedom is different than being greedy and obsessed with money.

Seems like some people are dangerously misinterpreting the message of the video, or are not listening intently. Money is not a problem - love of money is. Diligence is a virtue and diligent work inevitably leads to financial freedom. Therefore, financial freedom in of itself is not a bad thing. The problem arises when you prioritize financial freedom over everything, which is a slippery slope that, more often than not, leads to insatiable greed. Life is too unpredictable for anyone to truly future-proof themselves, yet it really doesn't take a lot of money to live comfortably. A man cannot serve two masters - either you make Christ your God, or you make money your god. So, put you faith in Christ and He will provide exactly what is needed - no more, no less.

I was able to become debt free by age 39. The less stress, anxiety, and rat races I endure the more I can focus on my relationship with Christ. Most of these things become a distraction or hindrance to your commitment to God. I don’t want my life to be that way if it doesn’t have to be. I enjoy reading daily and immersing my mind into Godly things rather than worrying about when the next payment is due, or if I have enough finances to pay a bill. It’s the LOVE of money that becomes the root of evil. As Jesus said, you can’t serve two masters. You’ll either love one or hate the other. I simply see money as a means to live in the physical world and helping others if needed, nothing more.
@Vlad-ortho

You're dishonest. "Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." YOU distracted yourself from God, not payments and bills. YOU chose to think about tomorrow's bills instead of thinking about God. YOU chose to not put your tomorrow's bills in the hands of Lord as he commanded you to do. When there is little faith in God a soul starts to worry about tomorrow.
@Joshua39-w7j

@@Vlad-ortho No, I chose to limit any distractions FOR God. There’s faith and then there’s common sense. It’s even written in Proverbs. Proverbs 22:7 “The rich rules over the poor, and the borrower is slave of the lender.” I’d rather be a slave to my faith than a slave to mere humans who have regard for only money and nothing else. You don’t place a yoke or burden on yourself or children outside of God if it’s not necessary.

My deacon later gave me Money & Salvation: An Invitation to the Good Way - from SVS press. What a great book. I realized, I have a moral responsibility to make sure my priest IS PAID, that the widows in our church ARE TAKEN care of, etc. Alms and Tithing are for your salvation. I think a lot about Christ and the rich man who walked away sad. He would have been a million times richer following Christ.

I'm 18 and just started university, I've been drawn into these "financial freedom" schemes. It's not about financial freedom so you can buy a flashy car to make people envious and attract every woman-no, that's not the point. If you take a step back, look at the economy, and compare post-graduation earnings to the cost of buying a simple house, you'll understand why achieving financial freedom is important. It's about removing one of life's biggest stressors, so you can focus on what truly matters-like family and raising children. In Western culture, many young women have extremely high expectations, like wanting a partner with a six-figure income, which is mind-blowing. The average teenager might see this and think, "I need to look like this and earn this much to attract someone like that." This mindset is a major issue for our generation.

Something I think is important is, if you do want money, get your motivations right. Because I do think in a capitalistic society money is a source of true freedom, but only if used in the right way. Money is also a tool of great power, which is why it corrupts people so easily, and many people simply aren't ready for that power. But money can also be a tool to uplift those around you and to take care of the people you love and protect them. Money for the sake of freedom alone is actually money for the sake of power. I think if you can understand that the most valuable use of money is in developing yourself, helping your community and providing for and protecting your family, not in chasing after your every desire and making your life easy, then you can have financial freedom without becoming a slave and you could call this, in my view, a truer form of freedom. Those who chase after money with the desire of freedom for its own sake or for power however will indeed likely become slaves to their own personal desires.

There's no reason to do click bait titles like this. It undermines the message, honestly. What you're saying about money is correct if you're just seeking money, stuff, and consuming for its own sake. Financial freedom is the opposite of what you are describing in the video, for the most part at least. Financial freedom is basically the money or property to be able to make decisions in life based on something other than desperation. It's the opposite of slavery. It's a way to avoid slavery. Basically, you might not be rich but if you own your own business and it's enough to survive then this is financial freedom. You can choose what you do with your time. You can prioritize family or health over working some job just to make a corporation more money. Anyway, the overall point is you should probably stop doing click bait titles. It's one thing to be contrarian because it's the truth, it's another to create a contrarian title just to gain attention when it's not really the full truth.

I've tried to have conversations about why I need money with laity and the subdeacon at my local church, and none of them seem to get it. As soon as you mention money with these people, their minds go to mansions and sports cars. They act like money isn't important for wholesome living, and all these people have kids so they know it's important. I don't know why they pretend it's not.

@ Sorry to hear that. There is definitely a balancing act. The simple fact is that money itself is not evil but our culture is so focused on money and consumerism that it makes sense a lot of people react to it in the opposite way. The thing is, there’s nothing wrong with getting money if you do it ethically and your main goals are to help others like your family and your community. I think it’s just that the pursuit of something needs to be focused on the virtues of what it can provide and how you can serve people’s needs and not for the money itself.

@@Docwell Something else that weighs on my mind is that I don't even know what I and other guys like me are even supposed to do with their lives according to Orthodoxy. Being a father and a husband requires being chosen by a woman which isn't in the cards for a lot of us, at least not until a decade or so of grinding for money (which we're told we're not even supposed to do in the first place), and monastics also isn't something a lot of us are capable of doing because it's like lifting spiritual weights, and trying to carry something you're not strong enough to can just hurt you worse. It feels like there's no place for some men including myself in the Orthodox system, and if everyone can't be Orthodox, then the entire system is flawed. Being single is obviously way more than it may seem on a surface level. I believe courtship is an essential part of moving from childhood and adulthood and one's ability to shift focus in their lives from escapism and fantasy to real-world fulfillment and responsibilities. We're biologically coded to desire certain things, and without getting it from a real family, there's no healthy alternatives. The longer men go without marriage, the worse they'll become spiritually, and it'll become harder and harder to ever heal. Being a monk is basically depriving yourself of things you need in moderation for your own edification after all so the types of abstinences they do are only healthy and sustainable in specific contexts that laity aren't always capable of. If most men have to be husbands and fathers than the entire system is broken because there's several times more young and single men in Orthodoxy than young and single women in Orthodoxy or decent, single women with modest standards in general anyway. It's like a lot of men are expected to do the impossible, and we're just told to have faith it'll happen if we wait for an undefined number of years or decades even though it's a statistical impossibility. How do we cope with that?
@Docwell
@Docwell 2 ай бұрын
@@youcantbeatk7006 There's definitely not an easy solution to the issue in today's society. I would honestly say that certain men are just not going to understand the situation modern young guys are in. So, even though certain people in the Church are going to have great advice on a lot of topics, there's always going to be a certain disconnect between generations who just don't "get it" when it comes to relationships and dating for modern young men. Obviously, it's going to be hard to really summarize anything in a KZbin comment. But I think the main thing guys need to work towards is to be the kind of guy who has his pick of women. And this actually doesn't really mean having a bunch of money. I'd actually say having money is almost a bad thing in a lot of ways haha. You don't want a woman who is with you because you have money. But yeah, I do feel for you and a lot of other guys who have it tough out there when it comes to dating. I think there are solutions, but every person's individual situation is going to be very different and require different ways to go about fixing or solving the problem. And here's the thing. I don't think any man has an obligation to marry a problematic woman...if you know what I mean. So, if there are no women available who aren't problematic, then there's no reason to feel bad about being single. I also think this society is so extreme that expecting the average man to remain celebrate is insane considering the circumstances. There are way worse things than keeping yourself sane in this regard.

@@Docwell Being the type of guy who has his pick of women still isn't in he card for a lot of men, Orthodox or not. The most important factor is looks which depends from person to person whether or not that's physically possible to ever fix. Second is money which you already know about. Third is status which is most of the time achieved by having one or both of the other two. Personality isn't and was never a factor. If women valued good personalities, you wouldn't see women dying to domestic violence in the news, or women sending love letters and nude photos to criminals. A part of me wants to be over it all, but as I said, there's no real healthy alternatives, but it's not even really a choice when the "right" option physically isn't available to due the hand my parents gave me with their genetics and whatnot.

As some living in America making far below the poverty line on purpose, I know for a fact that's incorrect. It took a lot of time to find a situation that even makes it possible but there are a ton of opportunities out there. I have way more freedom happiness and time now that I'm technically impoverished. I don't make enough to even qualify for income tax. I don't take advantage of any of social welfare programs and have never begged for a penny. It took a long time but I've been able to barter a small amount of labor (mowing a small lawn once a week and minor property maintenance) each month into free place to stay, access to utilities and internet, land i can grow food and keep animals if I wanted. I have 3 places i can basically live for free that i could probably never afford to buy for myself if I worked for 10-15 years seriously saving up for them. One property has hundreds of acres. My biggest expense is food. I live far better making barely any money than I did when I was making 10 times as much and had a 9-5 and a depressing apartment. I only have to work 16 hours or so a month now and I have complete control over, no bosses, etc. The quality of my life is so much better as a poor person than any rich person I know... and I know a lot of really wealthy people. Atleast half are miserable for a bunch of different reasons. They are frequently having issues with their properties and business, they are mad about paying hundred of thousands or millions in taxes. They think people are going to steal from them etc... They misplace things all the time... all things that can't really affect my humble lifestyle. Those other options you speak of might make life easier but that’s not always what we need.

Very good arguments and perspective, even when I am not a religious guy! Made my think about my own choice to be financially free!

The problem is that when you say chasing money is an illusion - it is, but it’s an illusion that everybody is playing, especially banks, bailiffs, police, courts and prisons. The idea of being free financially could be seen as a noble attempt to flee the rule of Mammon and refuse to be bent out of shape by *other people’s* greed and lust for money, using you as their tool to acquire it.

An illusion that exists to everyone isn't an illusion by definition. It's just reality at that point, so no, it's not an illusion and it never was.

@@youcantbeatk7006with respect you’ve misunderstood my point by taking my use of the word “everybody” a bit literally. What I mean is that Fr is half-right in saying that chasing money is an illusion - money is illusory, it’s a convention, an agreement that this bit of paper has that value. But it’s just a bit of paper. But he’s half-wrong in not then seeing how solid it all becomes for other people who don’t see it Fr’s way: if I buy something on credit and then don’t pay up, things suddenly start getting very solid and unillusory for the bank: courts, fines, maybe jail time. Not so easy then to dismiss as illusion… And an illusion is by definition still an illusion, *even if* everyone believes it to be true. Think about it.

You have a good point about the love for money. A person should pray and research, What is the dollar? Have fun going down that rabbit hole with God. Financial freedom seems to be a general term and not an exact. When I hear financial freedom, I think of being free from the slavery of debt, free from the desire to keep up with Joneses and that's where your point comes in. A relationship with God frees me from the desire to fill that "gap" with need to get more new stuff. Great video

The deceitfulness of riches is biblical. You speak the truth sir. Thank you Man was created to bring glory to God and be heavenly minded. The less we have the better is not true however, God entrusts us with things to be a blessing to others so sometimes certain people are designed by God to manage over large amount of finances with the goal of serving Him with those finances.

Instead of being a slave to your job or your life's circumstances, with financial freedom you can become a slave of your own desires, which is very dangerous and can lead you on a path straight to Hell. But ultimately I think life is about choosing what to "enslave" yourself to. If you have financial freedom and choose to "enslave" yourself to God, then I don't think you will run into this danger, and personally I still think financial freedom is a laudible doal if you can do this.

being a slave to your job is infinitely better for your soul than being a slave to your own desires. You can’t have two masters. You either worship God or money not both

@@ordinaryish9215 If you desire money for its own sake, or for the freedom or power it gives you for their own sake, then I agree. But, you can desire money for the sake of improving your health, helping your friends, developing your community and church and providing for and protecting your family and yet not have it become your master.

Disagree. Financial freedom is a freedom from making money. From being dependend on financial institutions that threat you as cash cow.

There’s not such thing as freedom from making money. If you own a house you always have to pay taxes. You’ll always need to buy food and clothes. No one can stop working or has the ability to stop making money unless they live off the grid.

Father Moses! Thank You for the wisdom. You speak with Christ in Your heart. "We are not trying to make utopia on earth" - we cant make it. Earth is satan's realm. But we should make as much of it Kingdom of Heaven as we can, even if it is a small enclave. I got this idea from Jacques Ellul "Presence in The Modern World". That's exactly what You do, Father Moses. May You walk The Lords path steadfast - prayers from Poland
