I did not play high end sports, but did play goaltender for several years. Back in the day, when I got hit in the head hard, I was told that I got 'my bell rung' and keep on playing. I can remember at least three times where today I would be diagnosed with a concussion. A couple of years ago I was in a minor car accident where I hit my head and suffered an concussion. It took several weeks and treatment before I felt normal. If given the chance today, to wear better safety equipment, I would jump at it.

I remember when the NHL started to introduce visors in pro hockey. They made it mandatory in the junior leagues and colleges first, so that eventually you had a generation of players in the NHL that are used to playing with a visor. This sounds like the NFL is doing the same. Get college athletes doing it first, then when they get to the NFL, it's no big deal.

I think we need to be careful and not assume that these caps are actually preventing more concussions. Yes, fashion vs function, but we don't even know how effective that function even is. When it comes to the results of the NFL's training camp study, was the decrease in concussions due to the guardian caps or practice intensity? Were there just fewer reported in 2023 as compared to 2022? I'd also be interested in seeing if those numbers continued to fall, stayed level, or even rise in 2024. And then what if guardian caps enable the players to lower their heads more, and launch themselves harder than before due to the extra later, this nullifying its supposed effect. I think more research and time is needed rather than just assuming something works.

Considering what happened during the Bills vs Miami game last night I’m surprised QBs don’t wear them during games. CTE doesn’t come from “getting your bell rung” once, it has a cumulative effect, and that’s why the cap should be worn. BTW, football players at the U of U wear them. GO UTES

Also, I've always wondered...if the helmet is made up of a layer of padding, then the helmet shell, plus a Guardian cap.....why not make a helmet that is made up of a layer of padding, the Guardian cap material, then the outer shell. Just make the helmet a little bigger. Weight should be the same as just wearing a Guardian cap.
@reverend_wintondupreeАй бұрын
If you're making the helmet larger to fit the cap within the same footprint you will be using more materials to make the helmet fit around the cap resulting in a heavier helmet. Also the purpose of the cap outside of the helmet is two create two separate layers of protection, with the outside layer reducing the initial impact. That would be changed if you were to layer a helmet material above the cap.

I'm all for safety. But if the helment is insufficient to protect the players, then why not redesign the helmets? It seems like adding a supplemental piece of equipment at an additional cost is more for profit than protection. I also think there's some danger in assuming that the guardian cap are making things exponentially safer because you could have players think that means they can use more force. Would it not be better to make the game itself safer? Like if they make guardian caps mandatory in the NHL that should NOT mean that illegal checks to the head should be legal. They should still limit head contact as much as possible regardless.

I feel like the best thing to do is just get rid of the helmet, and then just wear a cap/ “helmet” similar to what the guardian cap is. People ain’t gonna hit with their heads when they ain’t got a helmet 😊
@UsernameOG0Ай бұрын
I wonder if these softer absorbing helmets create a disadvantage against hitting a normal hard helmet. I imagine these soft helmets recoil off a hard helmet much more. On a high impact hit (soft vs hard), I imagine all the momentum going into the hit can possibly even cause more damage so someone wearing this guardian. Especially if they’re taking a nasty hit to the head they’re already on the losing side of maybe. Even a soft hit against linemen. I wouldn’t want to be wearing a soft helmet guarding a man of equal strength wearing a hard helmet, just digging in face to face I feel like provides a disadvantage. So maybe this will be proven true and banned, or eventually everyone is going to be wearing foam helmets.

I still think this is going to end in a massive class action lawsuit. There's no hard science behind this reducing injuries. 20 years from now there's going to be guys who die early from CTE who wore Guardian Caps their whole career.
@RudieObiasАй бұрын
Then why isn't the NFL liable for the deaths of players with CTE? 🤔
@louiscypher4186Ай бұрын
@@RudieObias The NFL has settled over 4000 CTE related lawsuits. Additionally the NFL's liability is much less than a company which is marketing a product as reducing concussions despite the fact the independent research they ordered found the evidence was inconclusive.

@@RudieObias They paid $750 million to settle the class action and an additional $1 Billion in individuals damages and there's still many outstanding lawsuits. And again, the NFL's liability was hiding how much they knew about CTE. The NFL is not selling a product claiming it reduces concussions when their own research does not support that claim. Somehow i doubt Guardian sports pockets are as deep as the NFL's and when Guardian get's sued, it's not just going to be the players, the NFL is going to part of that lawsuit along with every college that has implemented the caps.

Wrapping your head in bubble wrap is no guarantee of anything. Injuries happen for all sorts of different reasons. Tua is not built to take hits. He's prone to injury. His hit looked to be more side of the head and his necked snapped sideways. If you're that concerned about getting hurt, then don't play the game. Soon they're all going to look like Michelin men running around with layers of bubbles around them for protection. If everyone was wearing those things, I would watch another sport.
