Why Formula 1 Cars are IMPOSSIBLE to Drive in the COLD

Every now and then the F1 organisers throw a spanner in the works - and we typically get a very unusual Grand Prix. And that’s likely to be true for the first race on the new circuit in Las Vegas.
It’s fast, it’s a street track and the race starts at 10pm local time. But the biggest challenge for the teams is that at that time, it’s going to be cold… really cold.
So, why is the drastically colder than usual temperature such an issue? What are the teams and drivers going to do about it? And are we going to see an incredibly chaotic race?
Formula One cars really don’t work well at cold temperatures. Now, this is counterintuitive. You might notice that all of the fastest laps at your local kart track were set in the evening or at night. But in F1, the power units and in particular, the tyres just aren’t made to work when temperatures are below about 15 degrees celsius.
And you might ask, why? Well, the vast majority of the season is within a fairly tight temperature band, within the mid to high 20 degrees C range - and it has been for a while.

Maybe the cold air will give the engine a bit more horsepower seeing as they are forced induction lower inlet temp is always helpful. Or run with smaller brake ducts to generate heat through the wheels to help tyres warm up. Just a thought 😮
@WigSplitters

ofc colder temps mean more power, if the temp is colder there is pretty much always an increase on power. denser air=greater air flow=more power
@PotatoeJoe69
@PotatoeJoe69 6 ай бұрын
Absolutely, especially for forced induction engines -- cold air is a Godsend. They'll make more power in Vegas than at any other track, and also (potentially) make the most downforce as cold air is more dense air (but that's up to the teams adjustments, of course). Vegas is going too be a very fast track, one of the fastest overall if not blatantly THE fastest.
@fatbikemontage2931
@fatbikemontage2931 6 ай бұрын
Definitely cold air is denser and if air is damp this also aids power. But it comes at the expense of more fuel, which means the cars would start heavier. The bigger factor though is Las Vagas is at 600m altitude. Not quite the effect of Mexico City but certainly less downforce and less oxygen for combustion. Of course more power, less downforce and cold track temperature means less grip. The setup of the cars will be interesting, as I reckon less downforce will aid the tyres warming up, cause they squirm around more.

@@phitsf5475 I defer to others on the weather effects in Vagas as I’ve never been there. But I believe it is common where night temperatures are significantly lower than daytime temperature for any moisture in the air to start to condense, its not water vapour (humidity) that improves engine performance, but droplets of water. Hence why I think Subaru used to have a water injection system on some of the WRX cars, trying to replicate the effect.

Why does higher tire pressure make the tire heat up quicker? Usually the opposite is true as lower pressure means more tire deformation and therefore more resistance and thus temperature.

At the risk of re-opening an old wound, this tire temperature issue is one of the analysis theories for the Senna crash in 1994. Cold tires due to a slow safety car and late braking coming into the corner causing a massive lack of grip and steering resulting in the tragic straight run into the barriers. Obviously there were many other theories, but the parallels are similar enough to bring the horrible memory back. Great channel as always. Cheers back at you sir.

It's not actually the sport's first event in Las Vegas, that came back in 1981 and 1982 at the Caesars Palace Grand Prix, I went to both! As a spectator, it was great the track was short 2.3-mile circuit was completely confined to the car park of the Caesars Palace Hotel so the cars went by in less time which kept the excitement up. Good Luck to all the Drivers, who would have thought it would be cold!

I had a minor shunt feeling out some new high performance tires in colder weather than I should have. The grip cliff when my rears spun up mid corner was incredible, and the rate of yaw breathtaking. Thankfully I was exploring in a safe place so just some bent bits. First time on cold tires and hopefully my last. Wish I would have seen this video last month. Big cheers.

Its not abt the air temp or the drivers. Its abt track temp, no high speed corners to get heat in the tyre and a long straight on which tyres loose huge amount of heat…. I'm a Vegas local, I've heard so much talk about the temperatures. The low for Saturdays race is 50 degrees F, and that won't be until about 2-3 A.M. local time. I have a hard time believing F1 hasn't raced in significantly lower temps before. I think the race should be in the September-October area for the future, but I think there is way too much talk about the "low" temperatures.

NO ONE HAS MENTIONED THIS YET: Las Vegas is a odd one for temps. The air temp can be 45f and the city temp is 60-70f depends on time of day. It’s a massive concrete jungle with nearly ZERO air flow through out the city. I’ve been there during summer and it was saying 93f on the weather app. But in the city temp gauge was 108f

Can someone explain how higher tire pressure induces higher temperatures? I've always been taught that (in normal cars) the reason nr. 1 to keep tires inflated was to avoid overheating them.
@markwallace1727
@markwallace1727 6 ай бұрын
Yeah, I'd like to hear this explanation too. I recall checking my tyres and finding one a little low on my road car. Figured it wasn't too low, so drove to the servo (petrol station) to pump it up rather than drag out the compressor. A few kms down the road and that tyre was at a higher pressure than the rest due to the extra tyre flex heating it more and increasing the pressure. Good ones barely moved. Spent a while inflating and deflating the tyre a few times (probably just killing time more than being effective changing the air) before I was happy the temps had come down enough for a fair reading. Needless to say, I always check and inflate tyres at home before any driving now. But I get that a road car/tyre is much different to a race car/tyre, so an explanation would be great.
@ThaDutchDK1989
@ThaDutchDK1989 6 ай бұрын
It’s really difficult to explain. Cause with a very low tyre pressure the tyre moves more and so heats up the faster. Higher tyre pressure the air can’t expand that much so it’s get hot . So it’s not like low Tyre pressure won’t heat up but it’s within limits .
@markwallace1727
@markwallace1727 6 ай бұрын
@@ThaDutchDK1989 Thanks. I had to think about that for a while and expand it in my head, but I think that makes sense to me now. Tye flex increases temps quick to start, but pressure reduces flex as it heats. So, less heating from there on. The more molecules to start with can heat more and retain more heat once the increased flex stage is passed. And have higher pressure I assume, which equals more heat if I remember my physics. Considering F1 runs a lot hotter than a road car will ever see to work, I think that's the main difference I missed. I've always wondered what pressure these tyres are at during race conditions rather than the minimum measured "cold" pressures. I hope I understood correctly. Thanks.
