Great choice. I got away from back squatting heavy after my sophmore year in college. I switched to a more balanced front squat/back squat/deadlift. I did not do one more than the other. This dramatically improved my athleticism (not strength numbers, but how I performed in the field.)

***** me too, its because having the bar on the front of your body instead of the back makes it easier to keep an upright posture/neutral spine throughout the movement, because you have to keep the bar over your centre of gravity. so it feels more natural and I can hit full depth with perfect form (no lumbar flexion) which I cannot in an olympic style back squat

“Feeling the burn” doesn’t mean jack shit you fucking moron. When I do 5x5 front squats 3x a week I don’t “feel the burn”, yet it’s the best way to get a combo of size and strength without actual periodization.

@@ArdiGashilifts i am so happy to be a football player, or i guess you call it soccer. But its so great, football/soccer players almost all have high developed calves, i can tell you its not fully genetic i can see the big difference between not having played for 3 months and then in 1 month the big calves are back. I have to say i have been blessed with an athletic body so actually i dont really know but what i do know is that if you have small calves the only thing you have to do is look for a wall, pick up a ball and go shoot your most powerful shot against the wall and they will grow massive. The people in my team who do that have the big calves and can shoot way harder than the guys who dont

Yo Elliot!! I want to thank you for your awesome videos brother!! I really appreciate the time you take to explain the do and don'ts and why's!!! Seriously bro thank you. I used to be a gym rat in the early and mid 90's and when I got out of the Navy in 96 I lifted just enough to maintain for the next couple of years. But, I got into logging cause I am from a logging family, all that muscle didn't do me shit!!! It was all cardio climbing and running up mountains and packing heavy coils of wire and blocks and chainsaws with a 32 or 42" bar all day cutting timber. 2 years ago I fell out of a tree @ 40' and got all messed up, compressed my spine, broke my neck, tore my scaphoid in my right knee, broke my wrist, and nose. I am back in the gym for the first time in 16 years, and I am learning a lot by watching your videos!! They didn't have this stuff when I was in my 20's!! Thank you bud, seriously!! God bless man.

@TheBrianphantana
@TheBrianphantana 8 жыл бұрын
Where exactly does it hurt on your back? Is like a pain right next to the spine? I have a strain in my mid back too, but I found out it was my errector spinae, which is the thick strip of muscle that runs down both sides of your spine. I want to make sure where your pain locates first before I actually give advice on what I think you should do.
@TheBrianphantana
@TheBrianphantana 8 жыл бұрын
Be mindful that if you do have a rhomboid strain it could be caused by over active or over stretched. So knowing what your posture looks like is crucial in determining if your rhomboid needs stretching or if it needs strengthening.
@mekayluzair2357
@mekayluzair2357 8 жыл бұрын
It hurts in several different places, right now the most intense pain is around my scapula. I feel the pain when I do something like a wall stretch where i put my back amd hands againts a wall and raise my arms like a shoulder press. Also when I turn my head all the way to the left (though this pain is not as bad as it used to be) I also have weird pain when i raise my arms at my sides around the errector spinae area you mentioned
@TheBrianphantana
@TheBrianphantana 8 жыл бұрын
What about if your tilt your head downward? Does twisting your body cause pain in the same area as well? When you turn your head left, does it hurt on the right side of your back? It could definitely be a trigger point causing the issue. But i need more details as to where the location of pains exist. Is it possible you can find me a picture with pin points? If not it's cool, I'll just need you to try to describe to me the location.

Awesome quad pump, w/lower weight than what I am used for back squating. But today, I did shrugs and somehow pulled my lower trap muscles. Probably due to trap strain="having a weak upper back" as you said. I am hurting, but smiling, thinking "Ok, I have a weak upper back!'. lol. Thanks, for the tip. Good video, something that I noticed when you were talking about stretching to get the front rack position. usually a person's Latissimus dorsi are tight which doesnt allow for the elbows to get up. Also a good way to stretch for front squats is to get under the barbell in a front squat position and trying to slowly push the elbows up until a stretch is felt at the insertion point of the Lats, in the posterior arm. Hope this helps

Just to clarify, it's not really much scapula adduction that assists in thoracic extension, thoracic paraspinals conquer that, the lower/mid traps and rhomboids are in a fairly relaxed state (with the upward-rotated state of the scapula)

Great job Elliott! I ran across your videos yesterday and subscribed, in particular, because I had heard about the front squat (which I had never done before) and I was looking for a good explanation. Keep up the good work. -Ken

No offense but what is all this hub-bub about being athletic? Once you have been training for 20 years or more, you will start to realize no one gives a shit. I hear allot of the youngsters drone on and on about being athletic. Who gives a shit, they needs to just worry about longevity. I guarantee most of these people will NOT be training hard be the time they are 50. I have been training for 30 years and I know VERY few people that have been training for 30 plus years. I see old farts who train but they haven't been busting ass for 30 years I am damn sure. All this blah blah crap is nice but lets see what is going on when all these young shits are closing in on half a century. Honestly lifting is not complicated its just hard. If you cant squat you will give it up naturally within a few years so I say let them screw up. Less idiots I have to deal with in the gym. All this scientific stuff is all nice and dandy but please. Front squats please 90% of the people I see cant even squat period or cant even hit parallel, so Front Squat is way out of their ability. I am DAMN sure 99% of the people who have trained over 30 years don't do this full of shit movement. Lifting should be natural and simple. You should be putting most of your effort into pushing a weight up not worrying about balancing yourself. I think MOST people would be MUCH better off doing heavy ass high rep deep leg presses anyway.

Dude, with all respect, no one cares how many years you trained, people cares about titles, scores, results... Yeah, front squat is probably useless for most of those who do train because like you said [in other words] - they just fooling around or doing "bro programs", but Eliot is a strength coach, and good one may I say... so naturally most of his viewers are ones who know a thing or two and this video would be extreamly beneficial for them... peace.

Once you go past the young's need to be recognized with titles, scores, results ans trophies then the bottom line is are you going to be consistent and stick with a program for the next 10, 20, or more years. Once you get to your 40s and beyond, which you WILL get to that point in your life and you truly will not place as much emphasis on notoriety but just the need to keep it up for the long run. And as you know 99% of the time MOST people are just plain not going to keep exercises like this up. Honestly, unless you are a professional bodybuilder who gives a shit about all this rambling. When a person is straining his ass off at that moment it becomes primal and basic not all this rambling nonsense.

Honestly I respect this youngster ideas but I am just curious what he will be talking about in the next 10 plus years or if he will still be doing all these complicated movements or (what I am sure will happen) he will scale this stuff way back and train much simpler and probably not give two shits about competing in some meet or some other ego stroking event.

b brock thx for the comment, I do believe strength coaches will love strength exercises untill the day they can't, as an amature powerlifter I do know people at the age of 40+ who are still compete on the meet :-) they have their category of course, they don't compete the 20's. Heavy iron is in their blood, the same goes for olympic weightlifters. On the other hand I do understand your point too, really, it's just seems to be at the wrong place. With much respect and good luck! :-)

I really don't understand your point of view at all. Are you saying that leg presses are really better than front squats? That front squats are complicated? I'm 38 years old and front squat 1-2 times per month for volume/accesorriy work to my back squats. Upon front squatting about 18 months ago my squat max has gone from 415 to 500, when prior to that it was stuck forevever. My old accesorrie work was leg presses. Which I do not do any more. My power clean/Squat clean also jumped considerably after starting to front squat. I'm not sure what your point is...its seems that your saying "the general masses in the gym don't know how to train, or don't train hard enough and this is too much for them to comprehend. We shouldn't bother educating anyone on beneficial excercise because excersing doesn't matter ....blah blah" We should all be incorporating Deadlifts, Squats, (Front and Back), Overhead presses, bench press, pullups and dips into our training, and stay away from the machines unless you have to really isolate a weak point or you are a physique athlete. These are all the simple excercise that actually work...reagrdless of your sport or age.

I'm a huge fan of the front squat. It's my main leg workout. I do it mainly to increase my testosterone levels. It's great to hear your intelligent-positives on the front squat. You give me more reason to love front squats. Thanks man. :-)

Do the bicep stretch he described. Also the weight should basically resting on your shoulders basically your hands are more or less there to help guide the weight and keep it in check. If you can't get the flexibility use two fingers on each hand to hold it instead of four, this works fine and many athletes do this.

Yes. Due to bar placement your knees will go farther forward than on a low bar squat, because every type of squat shares one thing in common. The bar is aligned over the mid-foot during the lift.

Dear Elliot, Really like your advice- It's lovely to get some intelligent thinking around all this stuff at last! I have trouble adopting a deep squat position due to my hyper-lordosis. I'm guessing that this is not resolvable but wondered whether you had any experience of this? Many Thanks and keep posting!

man, i watched a few of your videos and you really know you stuff. I tried front squatting about two months ago, i actually used advice from one of your videos about using straps on the bar because i have poor flexibility and struggled to front squat the normal way. Two months later my form feels like its improved loads on front squats. But i find the key for me is to go heavy-ish weights with low reps. I can't do a set of say 10 to failure on front squats, as the bar will just roll off after 5 or 6 reps. Maybe in future i will manage this? Anyway, i subscribed now! keep it up

This has been a huge help. Thank you! Trying to get over a bad ankle injury so front squats have massively helped my recovery. Only problem is I need to get better at the olympic grip; I always used to do the cross-over grip, unaware that it causes the same issues as a rear loaded squat.

yes you can just try to simulate it either by holding it like a goblet or just kind of on your shoulders. the point is that ur torso stays as vertical as possible so just play with it

This is a good video. I do dumbbell squats with 10 pounds weights held in each hand at my side. I try keeping and maintaining good posture but I tend to lean a bit forward. I will try this with the weights in front up by my shoulders. Thanks for the tip. These videos are informative.

Thanks Elliot. I just got up to back squatting 170lbs this week. (from the bar just 2 months ago) And I'm seeing most of what you explained, as well as tennis elbow from trying to force my arms to do low bar sqatting. I was worried that I would have to stop squatting! I'm going to give this a try, but I'll de-load just to make sure I can do it correctly Thanks!
