Why FujiFilm? The Reasons I left Canon and Sony to go Mirrorless with Fuji

In mid 2016 when it seemed as if most did not consider mirrorless cameras as a "professional camera system" I sold all my Canon (Photo) and Sony (Video) equipment to invest in a Fuji X-T2 system. Here are the reasons why I switched, the benefits of switching, and why I have stayed loyal to the Fuji brand through the years.

Nice to see more and more people awaken to Fuji. As a retired Fuji Rep, photographers just couldn't believe Fuji did what it does and SOOC. (I shoot NO RAW because I want Fuji's image processor to do the work, not Lightroom or PS.

Yeah, after 38 years of hauling Canon rigs all over the map, I needed a change. I was a wire and newspaper photog since 1981, just after HS and into College. Canon was my gear of choice, much to the bemusement of my co-workers. At the time it was a Nikon world, photographically speaking, so, few photogs we're carrying around Canon gear, and man, I would hear about it. Fast forward to 2017, I had moved on from Photojournalism focusing on travel and some documentary work. I had begun hearing some good things about mirrorless systems, so I dabbled with Olympus, Sony and Lumix, but Fuji won my heart. Picked up a 2nd hand X-E2 and I was rockin’. The following week, I went down to my local camera store with a ton of Canon gear in tow, did some ’wheelin’-n-dealin’, walked out with a shiny X-T2, X-Pro2 a 50-140, 100-400, 18-55 (kit), 35 f2, 16mm 1.4, booster for the X-T2 and change in my pocket, I was set. Pre-COVID, I picked up X-T3 with a booster. Needless to say, most shooters, especially travel photogs are now homebound watching videos like yours. I still do some ”news’ shooting and the looks that I get from the other photogs in the poole with my X-Pro hanging off my shoulder and the old school classic design of the X-T2/3 is priceless and conjures up memories of those days in the 80s when my white FD glass would stand out in a sea of Nikkor lenses. Like many old-timers, it was those old school dials and knobs that likely won me over. I am a late 50s Fuji FB, and there is no turning back.

Have a great day mate

@@JesusJackson hey brother. I totally understand getting the courage to speak and gain permission with portraits. In August I will be doing a video with one of my favorite street photographers, derek fahsbender, and he will be telling me the keys to street photography and then him and I will head out and shoot. What Fuji camera do you have? I personally like the 23 and 35 f2 lenses for on the go simple set ups! Honestly, just asking is key. Worst they say is no. But other then portraits, just walking, stopping and shooting is so fun.

@@philporto Thanks for the tips man, really appreciate it, and I can't wait to see that video about street photography (good thing I subscribed already then). I have a X-T20 with the basic kit of 16-50 OIS II, and 2 adapted lenses: one older 35mm 2.8 auto revuenon and a 55-200 DT Sony 4-5.6, the sony one is quite sharp and easy to use, but that aperture on the 35mm produces some really good stuff on lower light. I really want the 23 and 35 from fuji, but I have to wait to have money XD

The two things that drove me most to Fujifilm, other than what you already mentioned, were the cost-to-quality ratio of their products. The images and videos you can produce for less than $2k on Fujifilm competes easily with a $5-6k kit on any other mainstream brand. The other thing for me was the intuitive, tactile camera design. I love being able to change my aperture, shutter speed, ISO, drive mode, etc with dedicated physical dials and buttons. I almost never have to go into the actual menu system in the middle of a shoot. I love that.

i appreciate ya Jared. That is a great point. Financially it is a blessing. Even for someone new to photography, being able to buy a body and a few f2 lenses and still be at the price point of just the body from other brands is HUGE. The customization with Fuji is freeing as well.

@@laeicawezlar4417 I know very few people that really need 5k-6k and like I mentioned in my newest video, those specs do not make a good videographer. Some will get those cameras and their work will not progress. For some, it will be a great resource.

Cmon Ron! You got this! It took me about a year of shooting weddings with fuji as a second camera to my full frame (canon, Nikon) to completely transfer over. I relied on FF and bokeh way to much to where my photography got stale. Everything was kind of the same - blown out backgrounds to mask my laziness. My shots from my fuji were just more carefully crafted because of the evf and because I really started using aperture correctly. Fuji has changed my focus to where on a wedding day I mostly shoot in aperture priority and focus on light, composition, and emotion. It just makes sense for me for weddings. Love the channel man!!!

Great videos, Phil! I went from Nikon to Fuji with a XT2 when it came out for a similar reason that I couldn’t do the weight of the Nikon anymore. The weight of the Tamron 150-600 lens after falling backwards on a rocky trail really did my back in. Now it is Fuji XT2, Xt3, x100v. Love the color and ease of use. Now if we can be done with the Covid-19 we can get back to some real photography opportunities again. Best regards and stay safe.

Dude. I love this video so much. Fujifilm changed the trajectory of my career as well as the way I see my job. Long before I was honored to accept a position on the Creator team, I fell in love with the way holding a Fujifilm camera just made me smile. It was small, intentional, crafted. It felt like I had rediscovered my love for photography when I held that first little xt-10 all those years ago. Now I own 9 Fujifilm cameras and I'm as in love as ever. So : Thanks for putting this all into words. You're a total inspiration to me, and to so many photographers around the world who are chasing art, authenticity, and purpose. God Bless my man.

Great video! I switched from being a lifelong Canon user (almost 20 years) to Fuji. It was a combination of all the things you mentioned in the video. Size and weight: The size of my kit was just getting obnoxious, as well as hauling heavy gear. I started with the Fuji X-E2 because of the form factor. I know this term gets overused a lot, but it was a gamechanger. The controls on the top deck and the aperture controls on the lens were just intuitive. I love the physical separation between the two -- aperture in the left, and shutter speed on the right. It harkens back to manual film cameras back in the day. I still had my Canon 5D Mk2 at the time, but the more I looked at the X-T1, I had no qualms about switching. I had done my homework at looking at the Olympus/Panasonic/MFT system and the Sony system, and they just weren't for me...they didn't have the combination of size, weight, IQ, sensor size, ergonomics, user experience, and price. I've been upgrading since the X-T1 and promoting where I can. I've been touting them non-stop, at photo conferences and on social media. Wedding photographers tend to have the most influence but I'm hoping the new Fuji Creator program will give non-wedding photographers to be more influential and get the backing from Fuji.

Philip, great video. Really love all the info you are putting out. When I retired from the DOJ 4 years ago, I decided to get into photography full time mostly action and portrait work but was not sure what system I wanted to use so I bought a Nikon D500, Sony A6500, and a Fuji XT 2 all with a few lenses that would work for what I was doing. I thought I had an understanding of photography, boy was I wrong. You see through my military career I was a novice photographer and really fell in love with photography but did not have the time to really pursue my passion for photography until my last few year before retiring from the DOJ. I realized and found my passion again through action sports. I used all three systems, I loved all of them but for some reason I kept picking up the Fuji for most of my photography. Thought it would be the best for action but soon realized that I would missed focus in a lot of shots so I put it down and started to use the sony and Nikon system but Fuji was just something that was close to my heart because of the ease of use.. about year later a friends reach out and asked me if I would sell them my fuji system . He made me an offer I could not pass up . So I sold it same thing happened with my Nikon so I went all in on sony. I now have all sony gear A9,A7R3-4, A6400-6600 , 3 zooms and primes and shoot professionally, forward to to now I felt a void in my photography... you know it Fuji was missing in my life I always had a love for Fuji I kept telling a good friend that shoots with sony also that Fuji was different well, he decided to get the fuji 100v and fell in love with it now he wants to get the 50R . I now own the xt3 and a few lenses , I am slowly turning back to Fuji I know that the xt4 is out now and am looking to get one but, I need to get rid of some of my sony gear. I will keep my A9 for sports but will probably sell the rest to go all in on fuji. Any ways that is my story and would love to see fuji come out with some 300-400 prime for sports I know they have a few zooms but we need some 2.8 equivalent.

I was on the fence about getting the XT-3 for the last few days and this video was the final straw that made me do it! My first ever hobby/semi-professional camera was the Xe2s and I always really loved it, especially the feel of it. However, when I became a wedding photographer I was struggling with the slow focus so bought a Sony A7iii, falling for its high specs. But I don't like the rather sterile feel of it so hoping I can make a permanent switch to Fuji in my professional wedding work now and will eventually trade in my Sony for a second XT-3 body after I get comfortable using it for weddings. Thank you for confirming what I thought when I bought my first « serious » digital camera a few month ago. Got the x-h1 with a 35mm f2. I just love it. I fell in love with photography less than a year ago (even thought I have played a bit in the past but nothing really interesting at that time) and started with film photography (35mm and medium format - GAS got me also at some point :) ) Getting to digital photography was feeling a bit « flavorless » with these old classic manufacturers. Discovering the Fuji world just clicked something. Really don’t regret it. The x-h1 is maybe not the most film like camera of the Fuji world, but IBIS was a big thing for me as I very often shoot in low light situation. I am still sometimes looking at FF cameras, with some sort of desire, especially after having experienced a shooting session with a Canon 5D mIV and the 70-200 f2.8, and seeing this bokeh that offers a FF sensor in comparison to an APS-C sensor. But everytime I got a shot right in focus with my Fuji, and that tiny little XF lens, I’m amazed, and way more than I could be with other systems. So, thank you !

Fantastic Phil. I'm mainly a portrait photographer and would love to switch completely to Fuji but I'm so invested in Nikon now and at 61years old and mostly retired it probably wont happen. I have the X100V and just love that little beast of a camera and like yourself really enjoy shooting jpegs and not editing much. A few years back a good friend rented the XT-2 and a 56mm f/1.2 ( i think it is ) and wow , what a combo that was. I shot an outdoor portrait session the other evening with my D810 with battery grip and the Tamron 70-200 G2 and forgot my strap and my arms were aching the next day. Maybe I will pick up a used XT-3 one day and a couple of nice primes, who knows. Another great video mate, thank you ...

I love fuji too! Lol my mom got a xt10 back in the day for free from adobe and I borrowed it for a year for school and was blown away. I then got a xt2 as a graduation present and it was so much better! Bought my first lens the 90 for my first wedding with the 18-55 kit lens and loved it. Saved up some money and bought a 23 1.4 used but like new condition for 50% off on eBay. I know deal of the century. Then later worked some weddings and bought the 16-55 2.8 Recently I bought a brand new xh1 for $500. It cost $900 but it came as a bundle so I sold the grip, the bag, and the extra batteries to get $400 back and cut the cost in half. Love the fuji system.

Just found your channel. Great video. As a former fashion photographer I bough the Fuji S2 Pro with Nikon lens mount while working in NYC in the early 2000s. The images came out amazing and the color science still hold up today. Eventually found my way back to Fuji via Nikon, Canon and Sony and when the X-T3 was launched. Loving the look and feel of the images and video in our new X-T4. Ron... WTH man. Do it.

I was a professional photographer for a national circulation man`s magazine during the film era. My gear then was Nikon. In 2012 I decided to try Fujifilm`s recently launched XPRO-1 which I still have. I was pleasanty surprised to feel so confortable in switching from film to digital given not just the XPRO-1 retro looks but mainly to the handy butttons that allowed me to make quick adjustments , with physical shutter speed, aperture and exposure compensation dials, meaning that in many respects it' was a joy to shoot with. It encouraged me to engage with the process of making an image, rather than just pointing the camera and letting its automated systems do the job. The 'Q' Menu gave me quick access to a range of parameters that required menu-diving on other camera brands. I am now seriously thinking in going for the XT4.

Philip, I`m no longer in the photo business. I am a businessman and president of a film Institute in Brazil. My old photos are still kept in their original negatives and some in paper. So far, I haven`t got the time to digital scan them, a project to come true in due time, sorry. My dad was an internatinally acclaimed film director. He was an Oscar nominee and won the Golden Palm at Cannes in 1962. He was also awarded with some other important best film and best music score at a number of international film festivals around the globe including San Francisco, Cartagena, Acapulco, Karlovwary (Poland), Edhimburg, Montreal, etc. etc. He taught me all I know about the basic principles of photography, lighting, composition, etc. I love your videos. I was a long time Nikon shooter back in the early 2000's I had the f100 f90(that thing is a tank) and my first digital D70 4 yrs ago I ended up with a d3400 as a gift but once I was able to I picked up the XT-2 and never looked back. I fell in love with it from day 1. And every day I go out and shoot with it I love it more and more. Hope you well Phil. Great conversation my friend… i am on the same boat…started in the 90s with Nikon, and over the years i moved slowly to fujifilm xt2 and xt3… absolutely fall in love with it. I was actually getting more work recognition than my full frame work. I still have those fujifilm cameras , and yes they are slow and have less technology that the new stuff, but I don’t need it for my work… i thunk people chase technology and autofocus and forget that you don’t really need that, at least I don’t and i did master the cameras potential. Also work with older lenses , 23.1.4 , 35 1.4 and 56 1.2 and don’t need any better. The colours are amazing, that I’m using my Nikon less and less and like you i have a bad back from carrying heavy cameras since 1998. Keep cool brother

On here via Omar. This is the first I have watched, liked and subscribed. I used Nikon FF, had a play with a mates XT2, it was like picking up an FE2 Nikon, the last film camera I owned along with an FM2. I am now on to the XT5 from an XT3,, missed the 4 because of the flippy screen AGH! Cracking camera, the lenses I use are sweet as. The service dept is top class, I dropped my XT3 quite hard indeed. Fuji run a fixed price repair £180 which include postage and insurance there and back. They replaced, the bottom and top plate, the rear screen, the sensor and processor and some other little bits, two weeks turn around. I wouldn't use the HS2 because I hate bloody PASM dials.

I was a Nikon shooter for many many years..... that was analog days....... when all the DSLRs came along I worked for a clothing shop and I tried Canon, Nikon, Olympus and even digital backs from Kodak, PhaseOne and Leaf..... but I bougth the Fuji S2, because the colors where so awesome. Got the S3 and S5 Pro later..... And loved them. Some years later I got a full time job as a real estate photographer and I had to use Canon. Some years later I got another job where I had to shoot with a Sony A7.... and I was never happy..... by accident I ran into a Fuji X-E1...... And I loved it from the first picture. And I never looked back. Now I do jobs with X-E3, X-T2 and X-T3..... (I dont like the X-T4). Fuji is like having a camera that can look right into your mind..... it is so fantastic. I stepped back for a bit from wedding photography so I sold all my Nikon gear and got a Fuji X-T3... Chopped my FF Canon stuff and L series "arsenal" as soon as the X-T2 came out. Fuji were doing brilliant trade-ins at the time. I realised my camera was staying behind too often when it should be out with me. Now I'm still on the T2, and my love for photography is deeper than its ever been. IQ is incredible, it's light, portable, intuitive, and the lenses are top-notch. I use Samyangs too, they do some lovely lenses for Fuji. My only caveat is buyers should be aware that if they go Fuji and want to shoot RAW they'll need to dump Adobe products and consider well-know alternatives.

I recommend trying the free Fuji version of Capture one if you haven’t yet!
