The analog stick wiggin out like that though is probaby a soldering issue on the old hall sensors. With phob 2.0 that is no longer a problem since they are now included in the fabrication of the board.

@@Anomatron originally, the hall sensors had soldered to the board by hand. The pin spacing was really tight making it prone to bridging (electrical signal shorting out basically). With 2.0, the hall sensors are fabricated at the time the board is constructed, eliminating the human error in regards to this common failure point

That was probably a phob 1.0 and the hall sensors were tricky to solder. The analog stick bugging out was probably due to a short in the hall sensor soldering. The phob 2.0 corrects this issue.

Phob gang The calibration process was very frustrating for me too at first but after I got help, it’s my favorite part and it’s probably the best part about the controller Sometimes my slight up and down FF angles input cardinal directions instead 20% of the time If I don’t go too hard into the angle it’s more consistent Might be a magnet thing? That said, it’s still good enough for me but plup’s a top player so this will matter for him a lot more

The main benefit is using magnets instead of potentiometers (how the controller knows where the analog stick is pointing) which means the readings of the stick is more accurate for a longer time. Side benefits are things like programming specific notch angles like in the vid and changing how your triggers work a little bit

This means no drift and no snapback. also open source, meaning replacement motherboards can be made even after gamecube controllers are no longer in circulation. They are also calibrated in software, meaning that the controller lottery is (theoretically) non existent. it also means that notches can be made universally instead of needing to be made per controller. The problem is, this means anyone can make a phob, anyone can calibrate a phob, even if they aren’t the most qualified person in the world.

Potentiometers degrade nonlinearly, hall sensors and magnets do not degrade (well at least in your lifetime). Because of pots, a person cannot simply swap gamecube controllers without having to get used to it and play the lottery. With phob in an ideal world this would be possible, as you digitally calibrate the magnet readings to the stickbox directions, and adjust parameters like snapback and axis smoothing to preference. A big problem with the phob however is robustness and the accepted methods modders use to construct the controller, on top of general inconsistencies between modders and people getting burned because some guy in utah couldn't use flux on his solder joints. I personally make my own, and I am a fan, but if you do not have the know how to deal with them and understand what is happening and you need to go through a modder, it is extremely frustrating especially if the modder is incompetent. I also don't have to deal with transit and have never tried drop testing them but from what i can tell they fail on both fronts. You could argue that the phob as a project is limited to the scope of the motherboard and software, but the product in peoples hands is the whole thing, and obviously it has its fair share of pressure points. Tldr dont buy one if you already like your OEM and have no interest in learning about it. It is not in a state where you can treat it like a black box and just plug and play. The oem is great in a lot of cases because it had a billion dollar company who designed it for children to throw at the wall.

@@Derticlan Anyone being able to make a phob and calibrate it is the good part, beyond all the other benefits. Problems that arise can be easily fixed by the user if they take some time to read the github. It's up to the user to determine someone's qualification, and not buy crappy phobs from random people on etsy. Personally, I made my own from little soldering experience using borrowed tools and it turned out great.
