Kor, Kang, and Koloth were probably more like... 125-150 in that episode. Especially given that 7 years prior, McCoy was 137. Imagine the bitterness of a literal warrior of old, watching the ages pass him by and having borne witness to the first days of the clashes between Starfleet and the Klingon Empire bringing them to that point. One upside to Chang's makeup design is that you easily picture him as still retaining physical traits from the Augment Klingon era of his Empire's history. There's a great Chang moment in the game. After sitting through a lecture from Chang about how weak and worthless the Federation and Starfleet are, the player character asks Chang privately how Kirk can then be considered one of the greatest warriors and adversaries the Empire has ever faced. Change explains that, actually, Kirk is a Klingon. A well kept secret by the Klingon military, no less. Thus proving that Klingons are the finest warriors that the galaxy has ever seen. But for me nothing beats Chang seeing the Excelsior for the first time and saying "ah, the game is afoot." Just seeing the most powerful ship Starfleet has rolling into the battle and getting excited.

I'm a little disappointed that you missed the opportunity to mention that Shatner understudied for Plummer in a production of Henry V in the mid 50's. Apparently when Plummer was unable to perform (but able to attend), he was impressed by Shatner opting not to simply imitate the principal's performance note for note, but balanced making it his own with not giving the rest of the cast something totally out of left field to deal with.

“Yes or No. Don’t wait for the translation, answer the question!” that's the original quote Chang's words are referring to ; that was said by. Ambassador Stevenson to Zorin, asking him if whether or not the USSR is installing nuclear missiles on Kuba. 😉 And another fun fact: In "The Postman" Kevin Costner is called Shakespeare by his enemy General Bethlehem because he is also quoting said author a lot (as well is Bethlehem) - in the movie, Bethlehem's army insists on watching only one movie: The Sound of Music. So, in a weird way, Shakespeare goes full circle with Plummer here (although one does not see Plummer in the movie within the movie). Chang is actually my favorite Klingon as well. And that's because he is exactly as you said, a classic Klingon, but his character also points out something that is I believe mentioned in "Enterprise"'s Season 2 Judgement by Kolos himself (at least I believe it is in that episode). I think he sort of tries to correct Archer's prejudice towards Klingons who sees them only as brute warriors. However it is pointed out that Klingons aren't just that, they are farmers, tinkerers, poets, philosophers, scientists etc. just regular people and that it is us who prejudge them because we only see the "vanguard" in form of the warrior caste.

" 'CRY "HAVOC!" ..and let slip, the dogs of war.' " - General Chang, Quoting (the character of Mark Antony, "Julia's Caesar", William Shakespeare [A well renowned Klingon Playwright]) I love that I saw ST:6:TUC as a kid well before being exposed to Shakespeare, so for me, even to this day, a lot of the Shakespeare is best in it's original Klingon, that being, Chang. This line I have quoted I is in-particular always heard in his voice and cadence 30-odd years later, and clearly, he did it best. I've never seen Julia's Caesar, and there was a time when I was younger that I miss-atributed this particular line to "Christopher Lloyde", but the actual delivery is seared into my brain just as it always has been, I can't imagine it done a different way, and in fact it's part of why I've let myself miss out on that classic Shakespeare play, as, anything else, would pale in comparison, to the original Klingon. Thanks so much for this great tribute to Chang, and Christopher plumber, he's in many ways my favorite klingon too. One final note, so that I may geek out, I also love that this quote requires three levels of Quotes to properly write, as Change would surely need quotes around the bit he is quoting, and Mark Antony would have quotes around "Havoc!" As it's what he is quoting to the others that they should cry-out.

Plummer excelled at finding what tone best suited Chang. He knew when to go full ham, and when subtlety was best: like the little "double tap" finger gesture he gave for another torpedo to be fired.

My mother always enjoyed the corniness of ST:IV but the acting and mystery plot of ST:VI is my favorite. Plummer swiveling about in his chair yelling, "Cry havoc, and let slip the dogs of war," is absolutely delightful.

I know you've referenced it in other videos, but I was disappointed not to have another recreation of "CRY HAVOC!" Cuz 30 years and countless viewings of all three cuts off the film later, that's still not getting old. Although I suppose I should admire your restraint.

I took the line about not reading Shakespeare in the original Klingon literally. I seem to recall a Star Trek novel from way back where a Klingon gets trapped in Elizabethan England and becomes Shakespeare. I know novels aren't cannon but I thought the writers of Star Trek 6 may have taken that element and ran with it.

The best tidbit I learned about Plummer recently was that in the 50's he was on stage in Stratford Ontario doing Shakespeare (don't remember which play) when he met a young Bill Shatner, who was his understudy .

Chang is a lawyer, scholar, a General and the "man behind the throne"--Chief of Staff to two Chancellors..there aren't many Klingons can legitimately have a claim to having all of these roles.

Shatner first got theatre critics' attention when he was Plumber's understudy in a production of _Henry V_ and Plumber got sick. His signature halting line delivery was originally from him having difficulty remembering his lines.

Kruge from Search for Spock is another interesting, kinda non-standard Klingon character too - he doesn't do what he does because he's trying to start a war, or for "honour", or revenge, or anything like that; instead he discovers that the Federation has this utterly terrifying new technology that could easily be used to wipe out entire populated planets, and sets out to try and at least put the Klingons in a position where if the Feds tried anything, it would be a MAD scenario instead of something they have no hope of stopping. Do love that Plummer performance as Chang, though. Pitch perfect.

Chang's a great Klingon. Hell, he was SO good they brought him (and Plummer) back 9 years later for the game Klingon Academy, which is a rather good game, not just on the "ships flying around, going pew pew" side, but also the story, which (non-canonly) explains why the Klingons start overmining Praxis, where Chang gets the experimental Bird of Prey and a few other things that leads into ST6, making the tapestry of that movie even richer.

Can we take a brief moment to also appreciate David Warner, while he is still with us. Multiple roles in Star Trek, one as Chancellor Gorkon, and Gul Madred in TNG's 'Chain of Command', three roles in 'Tron', multiple films with Sam Peckinpah, 'In The Mouth of Madness', and the childhood anti-classic 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: Secret of the Ooze'.

one thing I never noticed about Chang, until watching your video, is his armor. It is very Klingon, yet is also very "soft". Rounded edges, and accented in areas to take your gaze away from his weapon areas, and more focused on his face. much like you mentioned, very rouge like in appearance, and very NOT Klingon, yet at the same time, you wouldn't expect to see him in anything less regal than that. I think that is a big part of what makes him stand out.

Chang definatly ranks up there with the great star trek villains. Though if I remember right his famous "taH pagh taHbe'" (To be, or not to be) line was made up on the spot. So he had, though he didn't come up with the words, contributed to the klingon language.

Steve, you have to play Klingon Academy. Or watch the cutscenes for it. It’s an unbelievably good game and very underrated, with a TON of backstory and character analysis of Chang. He’s basically the main character in many ways. You can get the gist of the plot from the cutscenes and seeing Plummer driver his lectures on battle at the academy is really an experience.

Klingon Academy was an absolutely fantastic game. Probably the greatest of a series of really very good Star Trek games from 14 Degrees East. It was so much better than it had any business being, and had all kinds of tie-ins with other Star Trek creations, including a small but meaningful role by a much younger version of Chancellor Kempec.
