German Army Soldier here: The reason it is pink is known in the whole german army. In napoleonic times the saddle of our cavalry was red. In the sun and rain aswell as over time getting worn out the saddle turned pink. So veteran cavalary soldiers had pink saddles. This translated later to the Panzertruppen which understood itself as the predecessor of the horse cavalary
@BattleOrder2 ай бұрын
That sounds more like one of those myths every army has to explain things for which there is no satisfying answer. Horse cavalry still existed when the motor transport troops (a logistics branch) were assigned pink in 1919/20 and cavalry got golden yellow
@madcat46332 ай бұрын
Nope. German Panzers didnt see themselves as successors to cavalry. Cav had been their rivals (funding, ressources, etc.) At Munster we were told that pink was simply the last color not in use (as said in the video).
@fridrekr75102 ай бұрын
@@madcat4633 It’s true that Panzer originated as separate from cavalry, and that they would coexist with different traditions for some time. But Panzer very obviously adopted several old cavalry customs, like the skull (the Panzer skull is literally the exact same emblem that the Prussian Leib Husaren Regiment wore into WW1, which went back to the 19th century. There was even a Wehrmacht unit thay kept this tradition and wore the same skull on their caps that the tankers wore on their collars) and you can read about many tankers singing cavalry songs in the memoirs.
@madcat46332 ай бұрын
@@fridrekr7510 You are right about this. Further more, there is a large painting (iirc) inside one of the main buildings at Munster (armored troops school) which kinda depicts a lineage of dragoons, husars and cuirassiers to modern panzer, panzergrenadiers and armored recon. But this was painted somewhere in the last 50 years I guess. My bet would be that this "lineage" was enhanced/made up in the post war Bundeswehr.
@fridrekr75102 ай бұрын
@@madcat4633 It’s very cool that they considered how the different old types of cavalry transformed into modern armoured unit types (especially when both armoured infantry and recon are part of the German armoured branch as a whole). My guess is that tanks were initially considered as a distinct new weapon, but over time when horse cavalry became less and less relevant, this was changed into armour carrying the cavalry traditions since those were older and more well established than the few decades of distinct tanker traditions parallel to cavalry in the interwar period. The same trend is seen both in the British and American armoured forces, which also started as a new distinct lineage but gradually transformed into a mix of cavalry and tanker traditions.

When I was doing my basic military service in the Bundeswehr, someone once told me that the pink color comes from the saddle pads of the cavalry. These were probably red at the beginning, but due to the sunlight, when you were often in the field, they faded at some point and turned pink. This was also how you could tell whether a cavalryman was experienced or not, because they had a faded pink saddle pad. This was then adopted by the armored troops. I can't say whether that's true, but it's certainly a nice story ;)

They told me the black color of the beret was based on artillery and how sooty those were, and the pink was just "old tradition". Fun to hear why my branch, airborne logistics, got their blue from. The bordeaux beret comes, according to myth across various nations, from one paratrooper who landed, had a head wound and just put a bandage on. By the end of the fight the bandages were soaked in blood, but the soldier still heroic, and that inspired the dark red eventually as a color for elites.

In the U.S. Army, we figured the Warrant Officer Corps wasn't invited to the meeting when they were handing out branch colors. That's why we wound up with brown.

You incorrectly stated that the Cavalry Branch in the US Army in non-existent, but rather the horse riding branch is. It's now split into Air Cavalry and Armored Cavalry. The US Armor Branch has two colors, Yellow (because of it's roots from the Cavalry) and Green, usually depicted running diagonally to each other.
@BattleOrder2 ай бұрын
I didn't mean it was non-existent, I meant it was abolished as a branch, which it was about 70 years ago. By law cavalry is not a branch. It does exist as a regimental affiliation though with all their special guidons and hats and stuff, and the term has been used on-and-off historically to refer to units focused on reconnaissance & security mission. Otherwise though it's been a subset of proper branches like Armor. Whereas before the Armored Force was created as a quasi-branch during WWII (that eventually took Cavalry's place as a proper branch), Cavalry was one of the top-dog maneuver branches equal to infantry. The Cavalry branch basically shot itself in the foot by resisting mechanization and indulging in inter-branch rivalries in the 1920/30s, which meant when the Army accelerated the adoption of an combined arms force with cross-branch integration after the German invasion of France it allowed for an independent force separate from the Cavalry to do the job (what would become today's Armor Branch). Cavalry was largely reduced to recon units (as opposed to the more prestigious maneuver mission they used to have) and leg infantry divisions that were basically de-horsed cavalry divisions. Post-war lost its "branch" status because of how much their role was reduced, and the Army basically applies cavalry traditions wherever it suits regardless of function.

The old color codes are still in use as one of the few traditions, which weren't made unfeasable by WW2 germany. The infantry white was given up, because all infantry are 'Jäger' (including the Panzergrenadiere, which are infantristic, but not infantry). The military music grabbed white. The WW1 'new stuff'-light gray was given to army aviation. Obviously being army and up in the air still makes you kinda 'new and fancy'. The logistics moved on to medium blue (not to be confused with medics, which have dark blue). The cavalry tradition is an odd one. In germany the recons have this 'gold', taking over this specific role of cavalry. The recons however were a 2008 conglomerate of armored recons (with the silent Luchs tank), the Feldnachrichtentruppe (kinda personell recon) and the elite long range recons (which had the green infantristic coulor for a few years). All having golden laces. In other countries the army aviators took the 'fast support everywhere' capabilites and see themselves as the heirs of cavalry. Other use the 'smash'-effect and say armored troops are the real heirs. Lesson learned: Everyone wants to be the cool cavalry. Funny enough, the signals also partly understand themselves and their task as in line of the cavalry heritage. They have yellow (not gold). Their yellow lace ('Litze') is usually called Pisslitze.

The shoulder straps are called EPAULETTES.
@BattleOrder2 ай бұрын
Epaulettes are much more fancy things in this context. They're the things with all the bullion fringe for certain officers. Shoulder straps is the term used for the plain cloth that German enlisted men wore.

@@BattleOrder I found the term as "shoulder boards" in many English military books. To understand what I am writing now you need to know that the NVA (East-German army) was a conscript army with 18 months compulsory service period for each male as their minimum regular service. There was always one specific day in spring and in autumn for drafting and discharging each year. According to the EK system, the unofficial hierarchy among the rank and file, only referring to the actual half-year (out of the three) of their current service status for soldiers and privates. The ranking went as: 1st half year of service "Glatter" (German plural "die Glatten") 2nd half year "Vize" 3rd (last) half year "EK" ("Entlassungskandidat" translating roughly into "candidate for discharge"). What does has to do with the shoulder boards? Those shoulder boards were when new quite stiff (like cardboard) and therefore board-like. Which is why the new recruits during their first half-year of service were called "die Glatten" (the flat or smooth or straight ones) because their new shoulder boards were (still) so flat and straight. Later these board crumbled a bit when the uniforms were used frequently and therefore after 6 months (when the next recruits entered the barracks) they were now unofficially "promoted" to "Vize" (something like "deputy to the "EK") and the now new arrivals became "die Glatten". Of course this "system" was tight in the hands of the "EK"s forcing the new recruits into doing all the unwanted labour and barrack scores like fetching food, cleaning the room and toilets etc. The officers had a mixed stand on it, since this system was present in ANY unit but was handled and exercised differently depending on the unit. Officers and NGOs often excepted this system as long as it was not executed too excessive and remained rather a rough riding fun. Not all tank units in the NVA were having pink shoulder boards, only the pure tanker regiments had them. I was a T-55 tank commander in an infantry regiment (MSR28 Rostock) in 1983-1986, which had one tank battalion embedded according to their structure. Since the infantry regiments had their arms code in white, we too wore white shoulder boards. But we had and extra sticker on the left lower arm indicating a white tank. Of course we preferred this since civilians could "read" the symbol but had no idea of the colour codes within the NVA. On the NVA field uniforms (Ein-Strich-Kein-Strich) the shoulder boards had no colour coding at all. Those boards remained in camouflaged colouring of greyish brown and beige. Peace! from Dresden / Germany

I was taught that there was a cuirassier unit in Prussia that sometimes wore red leather on the saddle. If a rider lived long enough, the leather would fade in the sun and turn pink.

Side note in WWII Geman tankers took off the Tottenkopf (Deaths head) badges if they were going to be captured. A black uniform with a skull and cross bones emblem were not the best things to be wearing if you fell into allied hands

Back then it wasn't a color to look down at. Quite the opposite. In the Bundeswehr they teach their recruits that the pink comes from the bareback lining of cavalry officers. Tanks replaced the cavalry so they chose the color out of tradition. Reconnaisance tank troops have a yellow one instead.

A more interesting question to me is why and whether they still refuse to wear helmets. I have seen pictures of people in German Leopard 2 tanks with helmets, but those could have been Dutch crews in German tanks. German tankers always liked to tell you: "If a tanker needs a helmet, he'll pick one up off the ground.", implying that there will be dead enemies lying around everywhere.

Well, it the tank doesn't protect you, what is the helmet supposed to do? But then it's kinda awkward wearing headgear in a cramped tank.

Another theory on the origin of the pink color would be the faded red of old saddles, another cavalry-derived origin story. The least likely explanation that I am aware of is that it was the piping on some Cavalry Guards regiment that somehow managed to pass it on to the new branch.

In the Greek army the cavalry color ( tank units nowadays) is dark purple or as they called the " red of Amaranth" for some reason
@leostark93792 ай бұрын
it goes further into the past. During the time of the knights, heavy cavalry/armored troops were marked with pink... this was then adopted for the armored troops, specifically tanks.

Germany uses the cavalry color for the armored recon units, since they were closer to the later Cavalry jobs (Edit: Have to say used, since apparently they merged them with all recon units since I left)

To understand the significance of the colour one has to go back in time to the medieval times. Where Pink was the colour of kings. Not royalty but kings only. The colour chosen for that pupose. It tells everyone of the significance of the panzers and that they are the ones to decide battels. The same as the artillery is called the crown/queen of all weapons in germany.

As far as I know the tradition lineage is that Tanks are viewed as the modern heavy cav therefore the pink as prussian curassier had red saddle blankets that would bleach with time, therefore become pink. The mechanized infantry or panzergrenadiere have a lineage to dragoons and the recce branch to light cavalry, the ulan and are therefore yellow coded. Till the ninetys mechanized infantey or panzergrenadiers were viewed as infantry, therefore they stuck with the "Jägergrün". The infantry it's self is distinguished by headgear. Airborne wirh a maroon baret, normal infantry with a green and only golden badge in the bundeswehr and mountain infantry with their bergmütze ( mountain ~cap~).

Then I worked with Ferhnspäher (spelling) guys, not sure what colour they used. Sorry for the misspelling!
