@@cupidsfavouritecherub9327 Please note that most Germans don't. Even a portion of their own voters don't vote them out of sympathy, but out of antipathy towards the other parties...which is a decision I can't support given their policies, but is understandable to a degree.

@@cupidsfavouritecherub9327 Yeah don't overstate this. In countries like the UK and the US that have (for the most part) bipartisan political systems, being a big political party means something completely different than in a country with many parties. In the last federal election in Germany, AfD won only 10.3% of the vote. The vast majority of Germans are very heavily against AfD, but their voter share is significant none the less. 10% of the votes is significant in most European countries, in the same federal election, the winner (SDP) only got 25% of the vote after all. There is never 1 party that has a majority and gets the say in most European countries. It is almost always coalition talks between several parties. The bad part is that this means that it is much easier for parties like AfD to have a say in politics and have serious influence, but it also means that the likelyhood that they would have absolute say over what happens is near 0. No party has absolutely power ever, you always have to form coalitions with other parties.

Up until 1944, getting into the SS is a massive privilege and such privilege accords a proportionately high barrier of entry. To start, any prospective candidate must pass the extremely high physical and memtal tests (higher than thr Wehrmacht) and must also present a complete stack of papers saying they are of pure blood (starting from 1700, also the year Frederick the Great granted Jews German citizenship). For this dude to say that the SS has farmers forced into service in its ranks is a strong insult, even for the SS because Himmler will not accept anything that cheapens his organization to that of the Wehrmacht...
@RealUlrichLeland

The SS also had to be actual members of the Nazi party. It wasn't like the army where anyone could be conscripted, it was a direct expression of support for Nazi ideology.
@gidi3250
@gidi3250 24 күн бұрын
"Following the Battle of France in 1940, Hitler authorised the enlistment of "people perceived to be of related stock", as Himmler put it, to expand the ranks. A number of Danes, Dutch, Norwegians, Swedes, and Finns volunteered to serve in the Waffen-SS under the command of German officers. Not all members of the SS-Germanischen Leitstelle (SS-GL) or the RHSA stressed the nationalistic tenets of the Nazi state with respect to the war and occupation but instead looked to pan-Germanic ideas that included disempowering the political elites, while at the same time, integrating Germanic elements from other nations into the Reich on the basis of racial equality." From 1940 non Germans could join and did, some did it out of fear of the Soviets (Ukrainian, Baltic's, Finish) and others did because they shared similar ideals but not the exact same Nazi one (Skandenavian, Indian/Pakistani)

@James-dx8it
@James-dx8it 23 күн бұрын
The SS certainly began with very stringent restrictions on membership, but it's important to note how fast they went away. The first instances of conscription began in 1940, shortly after the official creation of the Waffen-SS as an organization within the greater SS. By 1942, in the occupied balkans every ethnic German was liable for conscription into the SS, months later efforts expanded to recruiting non ethnic Germans for various units, with conscription being implemented where recruits couldn't be had. By 43, The idea of the SS being relying primarily on recruiting goes out the window, with some areas proving much more successful, and others requiring conscription to a greater degree. Ultimately, Conscription existed for essentially the entire time the Wafffen-SS existed, with according to post war reports by the allies found ~1/3rd of the Waffen-SS was conscripted over the war, with a much higher proportion towards the end of the war. So yes, the SS absolutely forced farmers and other people into it ranks against their wishes, and the postwar international Military Tribunal recognized that fact and deliberately excluded conscripts for criminal status only due to wartime service in the Waffen-SS.

Not really it was all truth. The recruiting system of the SS is to take the most promising individuals who are most emotionally strong and bring them into the SS. Many accounts by officers literally say their first few months of service are the most traumatic and then they just get used to it. What makes nazism bad isn’t their nationalist nor their socialist beliefs. Rather it’s their militaristic systems which can turn average people into monsters.

I don't really get what all the fuss is about Krah's statement. Don't get me wrong, this guy is certainly an idiot and many of his political stances are ridicilously bad, him also being a russian/chinese asset, but this one is just kinda speaking plainly albeit naively not defaulting to political talk that doesn't mean anything. More context: He was asked about a statement of his that "Germans should be proud of their ancestors" if that applied to SS members too and replied that, while there certainly was a high percentage of war criminals among them, it should be judged individually based on what they did. He went further talking about his wife's family, who were Germans from hungary and forced with the decision of either hungarian army and the likely prospect of death or the SS. While these statements aren't particularly eloquent and definitely not smart to fall for such a push on a foreign newspaper even, they are true though. (well, as a general thing, idk about his wife's family tbh) The SS started voluntary but towards the end of the war people could also get drafted or pressured into it. Would you be able to dodge nazi draft even if that meant risking your life and the one of your loved ones?

@@florianfelix8295 there was the choice for Hungarian army, but also the fear of being used as cannon fodder if you're ethnically German there. And not all SS units were Totenkopf divisions (guarding the concentration camps), part of the administrative branch controlling the camps, in the many squads that were involved in mass executions before the holocaust got ramped up or took part in any of the other countless other atrocities of the SS. It wasn't a club where you had to prove you had blood on your hands before getting in. Some members really were just soldiers or even just administrators of everyday life. There are even ones who defected, like at Castle Itter where one fought with an Austrian army guy and a handful of americans against other SS to rescue some french POWs.
