The Jedi got the same treatment as the Samurai in Japan when it modernized. They were no longer needed, relics of the past. Samurai, according to anecdotes, were above the law. They had the Samurai code, but they were also human and fallible. Something to think about, at least, as it might not be a perfect analogy. But the way this plays out in the Star Wars universe also played out in Japan.

This was a closer look into Luke's thinking. It showed us that he thought things out, he looked at all sides of the situation, though with Abeloth conducting her mind games, it put the Jedi in a tight spot. Though once Luke left, things started to go down hill, especially with the people that were under the command of Daala started to make prizes out of the Jedi they encased. Though in the end, it led to the point where the Jedi gave up their position, and distanced themselves from the Galactic Alliance. Therefore the government couldn't control them anymore or have any say in how they should follow the Force. Though this revelation to Luke probably showed him that there was more that the Jedi needed to do, rather than just cut and run.

Starwars' Jedi work like real world politics and acts on a cycle. -The Jedi acts alone and grows their power, then it helps a group that asks for it only for that group to absorb it and weaken the Jedi, then that group gets dissatisfied with the Jedi, and finally the Jedi act alone again which starts growing their power. -Just as A Nation rises to fight against corruption, has peaceful days that start corruption, the corruption grows, foreign power intensifies corruption creating hard days, then a Nation rises to fight against corruption.

This series brought balance back to the Jedi, under Del Rey we got warrior Jedi but their portrayal strayed from their origins. The earlier books often had Luke and other Jedi purposefully finding a peaceful way to resolve conflicts. Didn't can for it but looking back there needed to be a way to reset the order after the Vong invasion and its effect on the Galaxy. I just didn't like they brought Dalaa back. The best part of this is that it was a very Luke Skywalker moment which I loved.

Battletech universe had somewhat simular situation. A big military force was used to essentually quell sucessful usurpation attempt, but after that there was a massive military force kind of holding the entire galaxy by the throat. So the most peaceful and best solution was the exile of said military force, because power vacuum left by the usurper would have to be filled by either that peacekeeping force or somebody else
@devinbrown8312
@devinbrown8312 5 ай бұрын
The issue with this is that the alternative is to do what in this situation? The Jedi intervenes and so the person pulled their blaster? Also, if the Jedi de-escalated the situation by using the force you are now giving leeway for Jedi to take away free will. Finally, in the case of the Jedi going on a rampage, giving short notice thorough reports and leaving, do you want to lock the Jedi up? How long will a Jedi going through the prison system before they decide nope and leave? Or worse, criminals try and assault the Jedi and then the Jedi defends themselves with the force or is assaulted and possibly killed. The only true fix is, the Jedi leave Coruscant and create their own society where they are left alone. The Republic doesn’t want that because that society would be too strong and it would weaken the Republic to the point that they could be overrun and destroyed. You can’t have it both ways which is what the Republic wants.

I do believe that if a Jedi resorts to severing an assailant's limb to stop a fight from escalating, they should be responsible for assisting the assailant getting a prosthesis. It would be well within the Jedi Way to do so, and I think it would improve the view of the Jedi Order somewhat. The Jedi should be held accountable for rheir mistakes because that, in and of itself, is a way to uphold the Light Side and properly protect the galaxy. It helps keep proper order and balance.
@weeklyfascination
@weeklyfascination 5 ай бұрын
The video makes a great point. A Jedi could easily knock the other person down with the force. Why chop off a limb, other than it makes for great visuals for a movie, and shows how deadly a lightsaber can be? No doubt, this long view wasn't really part of the calculus when Ep IV was written and filmed.

Personally, I appreciated this event, not because it was strictly right, though it was, in several ways, but because it also depicted the "burdens" of good, and the treatment of heroes when they aren't actively in the momentbof fighting villainy, when some of these issues would be waived because their efforts, which also weren't being rewarded, were convenient. This kind of thing pops up in comics, too. Superman is often Earth's greatest hero, but he's also of a power level that, when he fights someone who can make him work for it, collateral damage happens. Whole buildings; city blocks might get pulverized. Who pays to repair them? Superman? Bruce Wayne? Lex Luthor? The taxpayers of Metropolis? If someone else got hurt, is there any recourse for them? Do they sue Superman? The villain? The city? Batman savagely pulverized thugs. Because he isn't a law enforcement officer, or part of the system, I don't think people he stops can be regularly arrested; evidence chains are broken, and excessive violence committed. He's going to probably combine physical injuries that will take the longest to heal with psychological terror that this could happen again, to keep them off the streets for as long as possible, and that could be mortifying to authorities. I'm not saying it's right, but there is that gap between what is right, and what people who want to do right do, especially when they have unique abilities.
@thinkintelligently5925
@thinkintelligently5925 4 ай бұрын
I guess the short of it would really be do you want to punish or hinder the only being that could save earth from such a threat because doing so involves collateral damage? It's calculated risk/loss versus reward. I just don't see why you would put Superman in prison because he alone had the power to stop something that could destroy us all and, in the process, only at least LESS than that was destroyed. lol It doesn't make sense to blame the noun that caused less to be destroyed than the noun that would have destroyed everything in the absence of the previous. Unreasonable justice IMHO.

Those who don the uniform and participate in battle don't return home after each battle to fill out paperwork or be questioned on the merits of their kills/maiming. Ideally, we as humans would be accountable and so, here too I believe it was a mistake for Luke, however well meaning and understanding as he may have been to agree to such things. The saviour of the galaxy and one who was forced to kill his own father(technically) should have some pull with regards to idiots requiring burials or prosthetics. She's lucky he didn't just mind trick her.

Yes the Jedi should have been held accountable, the problem with the way the author handled it is that they were held accountable before they'd done anything to be held accountable for. The law was retroactively applied, something that no democratic society would ever do, therefore in doing so the New Republic proved they where in fact the one's operated above the law, and so they are the ones who should have been held accountable, not Luke. Had they laid down the law and said from this date no Jedi is above the law and must conform to the same laws as the common folk, then that would have been the correct application.

I read both series back when they were released and the zahn books were so boring since the villian was too perfect. Daala won a lot of battles yet she lost battles as well and it made her more grounded. Any time a fight broke out you knew the outcome until the final battle. The battles in those books went like this, Villian looks at artwork, says the heroes are going to do this and this, villian was right every time. Just thinking, but isn't the reason so many Jedi turned under Luke, those being the more powerful ones at that, due to balance in the force. The fact is that the force will always try to balance itself no matter what. Therefore if the only force wielders at a time are majority light, the natural flow of the force will guide light users to the dark. Luke was the most powerful source of Light in the history of the Star Wars Universe and therefore it stands to reason that the more powerful jedi would be turned to even the scales.

This is what should have been Luke's story in the sequel trilogy. Although instead of Daala, Thrawn using those arguments to turn the galaxy against the Jedi. Maybe even start an internal civil war within the Jedi order itself over the situation.

the problem is someone like luke is not ordinary. he's an outlier, a "superman" of his time. you can be too dogmatic with the new republic just as you can with the force. ideology isn't the same as one's reality and that's a hard chew for some.

I think both sides were right the Force DOES change everything but that does not mean Jedi who are turn to the dark side on their own should not be bushed away when they break the law the former head of state may had good arguments againts Luke’s Jedi but she was mostly a former Imperal control freak and she was mostly lying to herself that it was not personal

I would argue that there is also another side to this argument that a Jedi is also allowed to act in self defense as Obi Wan had did so in EP4, and if we remove the fact that he was a Jedi from the equation that the Galactic Republic ( Or Galactic Alliance at this point in time) wouldn't even have cared. They do have a point, and the problem is that the Jedi have served the Republic and the Government so loyally that it brought the Jedi's destruction and ultimately its destruction and rule under the fists of Palpatine and Vader and had the Jedi not been so intertwined with politics, at the very least would have been much more difficult to wipe the Jedi out and much more difficult for Palpatine to take control. The Jedi serving the Government is what brought the galaxy to this point to begin with. She is ultimately wrong from this view.

I know super man of DC comics is not of the Star wars universe. Neither is Spiderman of the Marvel universe although Disney owns the rights of the latter now. But both are good examples of how super powered beings should behave. Both serve humanity and the earth and the laws. As Spiderman puts it great power brings great responsibility . Obviously Luke Skywalker of the EU continuity didn't realize this until he went on his exile. However if I remember he was invited by Daala to come back to the Alliance because of the issues with Abeloth in which not only the Jedi faced but a faction of the Sith on the outer territories who helped Luke Skywalker and his son as well. And also his son fell in love with a young Sith lady whose father was the leader of the sith faction.

I love the joke they inserted into the over story plot. A Sith Lord and Jedi master walk into a police station together in a polite social manner, why ? Their son and daughter was out after curfew. Other in each respected galaxy civilization their children are consider young adults in their early twenties. For that planet society, their children were still underage. The writing of the parents roasting their children like they were still teenagers was in my view very funny. Over the years I found people who had raised teenagers find the chapter more amusing.

I cannot agree with Daala here for multiple reasons. Most come from my own views on accountability and how I see it as more of a problem most of the time. Also, I believe in doing what needs to be done, consequences be damned.

This is why so many super heroes have secret identities. Batman and his kids would have had these problems if they didn't wear masks. If the government had a problem with them, they had to find them first. I think the Jedi should have tried to be less publicly involved. I think this may be why Sith often wore masks and changed their names. This situation is exactly why Spiderman, Batman, Superman and many others lead a double life and wear outfits that hide their true identity.

The whole argument stands on stupidity ground. First of all should we exile every teacher whoes students commit a crime??? Second the bar fight... If one side takes out a gun (To shoot another person) is cutting down an arm really that big a deal, compared to idk not doing anything and letting people kill eachother 😅😅

It’s a great story, and it shows what an honorable character Luke is in legends. It’s funny to me though, that Luke or anyone would take that talk from an Imperial. Basically a Nazi telling a Jedi that think they are above the law when the Imperials did a lot worse.

I think you’re hitting on something that far deeper than what people may think, if the Jedi were acting in such a way to be above the law, because their belief system was saying such thing or teaching such a thing. in my eyes, that would put them on the dark side. they lost their ability to sense the dark side because they were part of the dark side to make themselves, judge jury and executioner, when the force is within everything? and the self denial of these things blinded them. makes sense to me. I don’t believe there is a light or dark side. There is just the force.

So it kind of goes down to this. The opposition is saying that if the Jedi knew what the person was going to do, they should have just used the force to subdue them. The Jedi are saying well If I know who they are, where their heart is and where they are headed to act etc. Then I did the right thing. So, if the opposition believes they are in tune enough with the force 1 way than why not the other and stop basing it on so many seeming assumptions.

I think the Jedi should simply never have joined to GA in the first place and the second the GA started medaling in Jedi affairs they should have left with Luke simply telling the Imperial that they of all people had NO Right to tell the Jedi how to operate as it was under there rule that the Old Jedi were wiped out in the first place. So if they wanted to try the Jedi then the Jedi would simply leave the Republic and sever all ties and even suggest that they should never have rejoined in the first place given how badly the previous Republic had screwed them over. The Jedi as of now would retreat from all Republic member worlds and return to their ancestral homes on which no Republic dignitaries were allowed to step foot and the Jedi would never again interfere with Republic affairs or save them until they felt that the Galactic Populus had changed their tune and even then they still may not return. Any attempts to interfere with Jedi affairs would now be met with strict recourse as the Jedi were no longer tied to the Republic or bound by its laws or petty biacracy

I'd say it's more about the trust of the people. The Jedi can do a thing and it be right, but look very bad to anyone else, like the severing of limbs. These "good" actions can easily be seen as evil by the public, especially if there is no real responsibility taken. Luke just made the choice that had to be made unfortunately, since the Jedi can't as easily operate without the trust of the people and also their government. Accountability would especially be more important to the people of that time, with the Jedi's name being bismirched for decades at this point.

I dont think this is a stupid reason. The Jedi might consider themselves above the law because they serve a higher purpose, but they have a duty to at least explain *why* they arent following the law and to conform to any harmless but inconvenient law. Resentment is an easy seed to grow, and the Jedi should be doing all they can to not only DO good, but also INSPIRE good. Luke realized that by accepting this minor injustice on himself, he could inspire a lot more good in the galaxy. Im reminded of you calling Ki-Adi-Mundi a terrible person for not feeling bad for people dying and trusting that whatever happens is the will of the force. A Jedi deciding that what they did was the right thing even if the law says it wasn't because the force told them to do it is the exact same thing.

In tales if the jedi we see dooku seeing corruption of senate and jedi acting like police but judge n jury too i agree there council felt like court. The jedi lost their way in clone wars and became soldiers something that qui gon said were keepers of the peace not soldiers
