It has been nearly 18 years since graphene was discovered and there are still challenges to be overcome to make this "wonderful material" widely available. The bulletproof armor, the graphene circuitry, the lightweight airplanes, spacecraft, graphene-based medicines, and even space elevators, were on the list of Graphene-based technology, but we are not witnessing these products yet. Graphene is already being massed produces by a company in Australia , I feel the usa government and big business is holding the Graphene growth back, they are figuring out how to make money from it compared to the current materials used, so they hold on to the past or the current system they have already invested money in

A very likely possibility, they buy the IP and shelf the product. It may be that Graphene has limitations and will never leave the lab because of this or it could be an evil conspiracy. I don't know if this material really can be a cure all why there isn't billions poured into R&D

Tremendous quality video! My compliments to the producer! I lament that I am so old (65+) that I cannot participate in this science. This is such an opportunity for a real contribution to the quality of life for mankind. Industrial quantity production of graphene would make landing on the moon a very minor manmade contribution, even if it is a rung on the same ladder to progress. The CVD process seems like a single step in the right direction. Something tells me the substrate needs to be a ceramic at a high temp like 200 F. . I would CVD some gold onto a hot ceramic sheet and then CVD the graphene onto the gold and then chill the whole thing to separate the deposit (s). Leave the gold attached as one experiment.

Well its been 15 years. Those first samples should now be rated for,, waste-ablity? like how long to break down. Does it create a harmful containment when exposed to other waste's? (If that's even a thing) What happens when fish digest it . Because we know they will. The data gathered so far ,maybe can point to the future. Like what we did not do for the Plastic.

I research capabilities of graphene for chemical sensing applications and the material itself is truly very unique and has many advantages that other materials don't have. The problem is that (at least in the sensing field, but I can imagine this applies to other fields too) there are way to many possibilities and options to be tried out so that a commertially viable sample is produced. And those samples that are produced around the world that show very good usecases are either too expensive to manufacture or the process of making of these samples is hard to reproduce in acceptable margins. Once we solve the problem of high-quality defect-controlled graphene production and its controlled functionalization (in graphene sensors), we can talk business.

Being that plastic bottles are not bio degradable and not green, they are however made from an oil or petroleum as I understand it. So why hasn't plastic been instituted or combined with black top road pavement? It too is made out of an oil based material. This would be a theoretical place to have plastic reused or repurposed. That's just my thoughts rather than filling up land fills and the oceans. If there is a will there is a way.

Because that road wouldn't last very long because of friction, dirt, sand and rocks on the tires would scrape that plastic highway. But it is a good concept, but even better if the melted plastic is mixed with ceramic or limestone to create composite.

I would look into graphene toxicity. Based on my very limited understanding, the answer is "it depends". If the nanoparticles are too small, they will likely have some toxic effect, but larger particles (at least 50 nanometers from what I read on Wikipedia) seem to be non-toxic and may be suitable for biomedical applications.

Graphene never came onto the market at all. Someone selling a few grams for hundreds or thousands of dollars doesn't count. You can't make anything with grams. You need pounds and kilos. I work with carbon fiber. It has excellent properties and I can buy enough to make a tennis racket or rifle stock for less than $100 and then sell those products for enough to make a profit. It doesn't matter if a material is twice as strong if I can't even afford half as much. Plus, the benefits of graphene are mostly theoretical. It has yet to be proven if a product manufactured with it is better at all. Carbon nanotubes were meant to be stronger but they weren't in practice. They were worthless.

Over 7 years ago it was discovered that Graphene can be made through blending with raw cows milk and de-ionized water in a blender for 30 minutes. Very cheap and simple process. That's likely why they dumped it. Hard to charge 200k per ton when you can make it at home and be environmentally friendly!
