Paul explains why grain-finished cattle have more exposure to glyphosate than grass-finished cattle. He touches on why we must look further than the nutritional quality when choosing what kind of meat to eat.

I'm a broke college student so I mostly just buy 80/20 ground beef in bulk from the foodservice store. It's not ideal, but I'm not in great shape anyway so my primary goal is weight loss and better nutrition. I think it's important to get the best quality meat you can, but I feel like the push towards grass fed beef makes people think carnivore isn't worth it unless you do grass fed only. This really isn't the case. It's still very worth doing. A diet of grain fed beef is still going to be much better for you than almost any diet with a heavy processed carb component.

While I agree with most conventional practices grass fed will have a slight edge, but is only best if the grass has not been contaminated. This goes the same for grain fed/finished. I raised Organic Alberta Angus for many years. Grass and grain is necessary for the best beef product in my opinion. Very strict regimen. Free lesson : Chop (which is barley, oats and supplements "chopped up") was Organic (cleanest grains on earth, no crop spraying with chemicals). We ALL fed cattle hay, green feed (combo of grasses which ARE where grains come from by the way) and grains in the winter with salt and minerals and pasture grass in the summer with additional supplements and oats for calves. Our cattle were fed better than most humans! We finished with a special blend of grains, supplements, molasses, etc.(family secret) to increase marble and flavor.

So August 1st I woke up and decided that I was giving up All sugar all carbs grains and wine. I have only been eating remnant meat . I wasn't doing really well on beef so I asked my mom who is the genealogy queen of our family . Did the research what our ancestors were I looked up what they ate and so I'm eating mostly lamb and goat and butter because we're Irish Scottish and English when I did that the weight started falling off so I went from 300 lb to 269 now and down two sizes from a 22 to an 18. I've had a gastro bypass and I'm trying to figure out what to do next because as of the 30th I've done it for 30 days should I keep on going or should I start introducing other Foods. And I'm very lucky to live in Idaho where I can get organic meat pretty much for my next door neighbors but what about animals that are raised in the mountains and that are allowed to eat off the range because I got a lot of ranchers that let their cattle and their goats and their sheep roam.

Hi Dr. Paul! I’ve been on the carnivore diet for a couple months for the purpose of healing my arthritis in both thumbs, elbow joint pain, crazy mood swings, and brain fog. I saw significant results just after a month! I am 5’2, 112 pounds, 46 years old, mother of 5! I have eaten pretty much low-fat/no fat diet my whole life and I’m now seeing the benefits of full fat! I am new to this and I’ve been researching some and wondered if I should I be eating a certain amount of protein/fat each day? How much Consumption of water/electrolytes? I feel like there should be some rules to follow?? I have not had my blood checked or tested, is this something you would recommend as well?

Most people are low in potassium, found in meat broth, avocadoes, and supplements. Another good electrolyte is magnesium; mostly avoid the magnesium oxide form. Another suggestion is animal fates for energy, at least 12 Tbsp/day, and don't be afraid to vary your protein intake periodically.

…ditto… Paul? If anyone has a “vested interest” in going granular with regard to the “Carnivore Diet” you win this appellation and all of the glory associated. Glyphosate aside, our “granular” attention could review a whole, long list: 1. Meat industry, in general, and regenerative farmers, in particular, give us “food” for thought: a. One interviewee postulated, without any scientific references, that grass fed-grass finished beef has a pH closer and more similar to vegetables (“…a pH of 7.x instead of the typical pH of 4.x for grain fed beef… .” …!?!… .) Three quantum pH degrees?!? I’m sure Bart Kay could make real hay from this, but I defer to you. I have bought and read your Carnivore Code book. This can be verified… ? It should! Low hanging fruit! Major implications! 2. Another unreferenced source concludes that even a grain fed beef source starts out grass fed and, being versatile ruminants, the resulting meat only raises from 1.0 unit of naturally occurring linoleic acid to a mere 1.8 units whereas the general porcine and poultry populations are much more profoundly affected raising already high naturally occurring linoleic acid from 10.0 and 8.0 units to the massive quantities of 20.0 and 13.0 units, respectively, for those populations fed “vegetarian feed.” (No glyphosate was even considered.) Profound implications here, too. Though much more difficult to get “peer” reviewed. You and Dr Benjamin Bikman appear to be on the same page, here. 3. Furthermore, and moreover, the Carnivore conundrum being hotly debated includes the issue of whether or not grass fed beef actually derives the same carotene benefits the live cattle apparently get from eating grass. Could this account for the pH quantum leap? Q.E.D.

Why is it that some grass fed beef either tastes fishy or like grass or even hay? I've read that it's because of the high amounts of omega threes. BUT Iberico ham is supposed to have the best ham in the world due to the strict acorn diet. Acorns are very high in omega threes. I'm confused.

One major point that is never made and needs to be front and center when buying grass fed beef is the type of cattle it’s from. For instance, grass feb brangus or bramahs are tough as leather, especially if harvested too early. The better meats come from the old English breeds, old style angus, Devonshires, shorthorns, Herefords, etc,,, they have the capacity to turn grass into fat far better than any crosses that have been created here in the states. I’ve done both and it’s a no-brainer once you done the test of trying the two different classes. Some food for thought (all pun intended).

Not suggesting people do the same thing, but this is why I personally don't take the extra step with my diet. 95+ percent of our food is screwed with in one way or another, even most - all the grass fed and organic stuff, and you do have to put in effort and more money to get the more quality foods. These days especially with price increases I just stick with all the grain and soy fed crap, even though I know it's not very good for you. I have friends that hunt and gardens, and the quality of all those foods and the way they make you feel is SIGNIFICANTLY better than grass fed beef and organic produce from the grocery stores.

@showbizonastick I agree to good extent. I watch sv3rige and I'm a fan of Aajonus Vonderplanitz. You have to find healthy animals that come from clean farms. Local farms that you can visit would be ideal. Your standard run of the mill meats at the supermarket are too risky except for rare steak, and you also have to even be careful with wild game meats.
