In this video, I share how I developed a career in L&D and why I believe starting with a focus on technology is flawed, even if it does get you a job.
Please note this video does not declare an absolute truth; in fact, I say that your career is your own, and you should develop it as you want to. I hope this offers a slightly different view to those often shared on social media.

I needed this video… thank you for the reassurance. I’m currently a trainer for a company and former teacher. I studied learning theories extensively in two separate programs - credential and masters. Saw my company just opened an ID role and I met all the qualifications on paper, but they want someone who has advanced experience using articulate. I shared I was learning it in my own time and have experience using related software in my masters (captivate). I hope I can find a role in a company that will train in articulate with the background I can bring to an ID role.

You will totally get organisations that think this way, but to my mind, it;s a red flag that they don;t want an ID, they want a developer. Same thing with the hyperfixation on portfolios over the last few years. Should you ahve one, yes, will i hire someone based off it, no. Just like CVs before them, they are not an accurate measure of potential. (Slightly different if you're freelance, but still.) Gld the video landed with you, let me know if there's anything i can help with.

Hadn't seen this 'til someone pointed me to it (explaining why they want to link); great advice! Very pragmatic, and yes, understanding basics is more important than any particular tool. Not least because the tools are oriented towards approaches that are more 'easy' than 'right', having that background will allow you to use the tools to do the 'right' thing. Appreciate the mention, too.

THANK YOU! Instructional Design is NOT tools or knowing how to use them.

Spot on: people (here in California) mention ADDIE in resumes and interviews like it's the key to the kingdom. Job candidates can also be counted on to mention "adult learning principles" and "learning styles" in their effort to pretend to expertise in the "instructional" half of "instructional design." For me, if the ideal candidate mentions all these things, it's because they want to tell me (1) their experiences where real world development was not linear, (2) how they have noticed that "adult learning principles" are the same as just "learning principles" across most ages and environments, and (3) how we know that "learning styles" are a myth. For a less experienced candidate, it is breath of fresh air to me if they freely admit to not knowing everything about our work but have other substantive experience they are keen to share - this was the defining characteristic of a recent hire.

Excellent advice however, I would say that putting key terms like ADDIE on a resume have to do with getting past AI (I am not entirely convinced of the “I”) by matching key phrases from an ad to your resume. So much of the job search today is dependent upon getting past that, and also past recruiters who have no real understanding of the job. I have applied to positions where, given my background experience, I should have at least landed an initial interview, but instead resultedin a standardized rejection email. Thank goodness there are people like you who actually read the resume. It’s how I landed my current position. But that personal touch is getting more difficult to find.

That's really interesting. I can't say I've ever worked somewhere that uses AI CV filtering. It really speaks to the way some orgs see people that they can't even be arsed to put a CV in front of human eyes.

Solid advice. I think knowing how L and D fits in is a big one. For example, working in a company with an Org Development function vs. working in one without. Big difference in terms of what an ID is expected to do especially in the analysis and performance consulting space 👌🏻

Thanks for pointing this out! It's also worth mentioning the equity issues that come with expecting every new/aspiring ID to purchase their own SL license. It's prohibitively expensive, and I hope that the rising competition will either force Articulate to update features more often or lower their pricepoint to be more competitive.

100%, I could never have dreamed of buying Articulate when I wanted to break in to the industry. I'm not sure they will ever lower the cost, but I definately think they need to move their offering forward in the next few years.

I believe a monthly sub plan could be enough to improve, but I guess they fesr high churn. 1y sub is still a very good price but most us, especially just starting, just can't afford it :(

A monthly plan would make it easier for those starting out and first time freelancers alike. I guess in real terms the bulk of Articulate's audience is enterprise clients. the odd licenses here and there won't really bother tham. That is, sadly, the reality of dealing with larger businesses.

@@InstructionalDesignTips Monthly subscription plan is much needed. With my salary, honestly I'll have to pour in all the savings in once just to buy one year subscription. I know to use it well but I want to get better and better at it. Can't keep practicing on office laptop and they too transfer the licence to other teams when our team has to work on other products.

@@sneharecites I have been seeing more and more jobs requiring Adobe Captivate. Thinking when my subscription expires on Articulate, will give them a go - more affordable and monthly option.

I'm honestly not sure if he is on LinkedIn (I'm not connected to him I know that much). I tend to follow him through his books, semi-regular appearences in videos and the research his lab puts out.
