#GreenLantern #HatedButGreat
With the recent flops of films like The Flash, Shazam 2, and Black Adam; DCEU movies have found themselves in a really bad spot. So bad that Blue Beetle and Aquaman 2 are likely destined to suffer similar fates. [clip, Aquaman “fuck you Barry”]
But fortunately we’ll be getting a reboot of DC’s interconnected universe come 2025 with James Gunn’s Superman Legacy. [clip, yay]
But all this got me thinking about another time DC messed up so bad they had to start over. A DC film that was so universally hated and a box office bomb-that even it was excluded from what would eventually become the DCEU. A film that in hindsight may have saved DC movies as we know it. That’s right, I’m talking about Green Lantern. [clip, horror scream]
Now a little later I want to talk about the upcoming series, Lanterns. A show that’s been in development for a while but will officially be a part of Gunn’s new DCU. This will be DC’s first big attempt at revisiting the character of Green Lantern since the 2011 film.
But with the recent failures of many DC movies and even superhero content as a whole, it got me to thinking-was Green Lantern really that bad?
Doug: Yes. Thanks for watching, for ScreenCrush, I’m Doug the Manager. [clip, endslate]
Wait, wait, wait. I really do think this movie may be getting more hate than it deserves. I mean sure-the CGI was awful, the story was clunky, and the villain was a giant fart cloud that made this version of Galactus not look so bad. But this movie actually has a lot of redeeming qualities. The first being Ryan Reynolds, he’s a great Hal Jordan. [clip]
Reynolds is now most known in the superhero world for playing the murk with a mouth. [clip, jesus Bub don’t you ever shut up? Not when I’m awake.]
And that’s a key reason he was so great as Hal. In the comics Hal Jordan wasn’t exactly quiet. He’s a funny, quippy, fast talking guy who was rarely found speechless. [clip, Mobious, we both know you love to talk, talky talky]
Reynolds brought the humor, the wit, and the charm that I’d expect from Hal Jordan. So say what you will about the movie, and believe me there’s plenty to say. But I think Reynolds was perfect casting and it’s honestly a shame that the movie didn’t work.
Well actually I’m not too mad about it because had the Green Lantern been a success, this may have been our only Deadpool. [clip, origins wolverine]
Doug: Wow, those Deadpool movies really were Ryan Reynolds first good comic book movies huh?
They really were. I mean even before Green Lantern and X-Men Origins Wolverine he was in freaking Blade Trinity. [clip, dumb scene from that movie]
Doug: He’s come a long way.
He has. But Reynolds wasn’t the only success story to come from the ashes of Green Lantern. Taika Watiti played Hal Jordan’s best bud Thomas Kalmaku. [clip, Hal shows Tom suit]
Waititi of course went on to direct the best Thor movie, Thor Ragnaok, and does the voice for everyone's favorite rock creature, Korg. [clip, Korg and Deadpool]
Angela Bassett played a very different take on Amanda Waller. [clip]
And then she went on to play the queen- [clip, “of the most powerful nation in the world!”]
Temuera Morrison played the father of Jason Momoa’s Aquaman. Clancy Brown voiced a much cooler villain in the fire giant, Surtr. And Sinestro’s Mark Strong went on to play the Shazam villain, Doctor Sivanna. [clip]
Doug: And Ryan Reynolds got to marry Blake Lively.
Yes that’s true, Reynolds and Lively who are now married with children met on the set of this film. And the chemistry between their two characters is one of the best things about the movie.
Lively’s portrayal of Carol Ferris was great and was a real standout for the genre at the time. The character wasn’t your stereotypical damsel in distress. She’s a strong and independent character that challenged Hal and pushed him to be better. [clip]
Another good performance in this film was Peter Sarsgard’s Hector Hammon. His portrayal of a misunderstood mad scientist was actually really impressive. But I’ll admit that things did get a little goofy toward the end when they turned him into Mr. Potato Head. [clip]
And that’s one of the films main problems, it’s goofy. Take this scene for instance. [clip, race track scene]

Aside from the CGI, I always enjoyed the live action Green Lantern. I don't know why it gets so much hate. Though I would've preferred a movie closer to the animated First Flight (which was also good).

Its one part an internet nerd Dog pile, one part Marvel fanboyism, one part a bad third act, and one part kissing Disney's a$$ by putting down their competition. If Marvel movies bombed in the box office, Ryan would be putting them down mercilessly here as well, it has nothing to do with the movie's actual quality. If it makes a lot of money, Ryan will kiss Disney and the fans @$$. Its shilling 101.

Green Lantern was the first chance to really dig into a comic movie in the modern era and unleash the ever present hate machine. 2000's X-Men and Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy really changed how superhero movies were perceived. Movies like Batman and Robin were forgotten when Green Lantern came out. I remember at the time the trailers were coming out there was a lot of talk among the groups I was in about Ryan Reynolds being the worst choice based on prior romcom showings. There was an expectation from the start that it was going to bomb. From there it just snowballed, every little thing was the end of the world. I suspect some people shouted it down louder because they felt it could have set a trend. As you point out in the video, it did. We got the Snyderverse and comic movies everywhere bow their heads in shame. The very lighthearted and fun characters in Green Lantern were the exact opposite of what we got, even they did break the core of the characters to do so. I thought Cavill was a great pick for Superman but he was never really in a Superman movie. Regardless, you'll never hear me say that Green Lantern was worse than HULK (2003), Jonah Hex, X-Men: Apocalypse, Cowboys & Aliens, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, Justice League, Fantastic Four (2015), Black Adam, or Suicide Squad (2016). I'd definitely rather watch Green Lantern over Secret Invasion.

The irony of looking back at something that got slated but you are now looking at with affection, whilst everything that comes out now gets slammed, and even pointing out in this video (and others recently) how perception changes over time is... well, I cannot be the only one who that is not lost on.

This movie was the first instance of DC’s “Cart before the Horse” technique of adapting. When they were announcing the film at SDCC, the planned trilogy was going to culminate in Blackest Night, a story that needed 50+ issues to build to and needed DECADES of stories behind it to have any impact.

Ryan - I give you the plan to save Marvel ... And other super hero movies. Kevin Smith and Lin Manuel create a character driven, street level story based on the older graphic novel Marvels. Low budget with hero cameos but focus on everyday people trying to get thru the day. Maybe something around Damage Control. Your mention of Kevin Smith working on Green Lantern crystallized the idea. 🎉

I got a cool idea listening to your video, which was great by the way! They make a full blow sequel to Ryan Reynolds Green Lantern and suggest the real issue with the last movie was Hal was just an average dude and didn't have the skills to develop his story. This is when he signs up for art and directing classes with a quick montage of him learning to make his suit cooler and that a good movie just needs cohesion and character development and with a 4th wall shattering wink he zooms off to be ina good movie.

Well said Ryan / Colton. There are two more points that can be made - 1. Transformers, Cap The First Avenger AND the final Harry Potter movie came out in the month following GL's release. Look at MI 7! Green Lantern had no chance even if it was good. 2. I doubt Ryan will stick around as the Disney Deadpool forever, he will be three movies in around the time James is casting Green Lantern. It would be a tough signature but getting Reynolds and Lively on screen together would be box office gold. Also Strong was perfect as Sinestro and has always said he would reprise the role.

The problem with Green Lantern was its direction. The director, Martin Campbell, was good in his sequences with his actors. However, the CGI scenes are similar and used in other lesser movies. Apparently, Campbell did not do these scenes and left it to someone else to do them. You see the same sweeping CGI scene again and again. It takes away from the experience. The third act is a very tired CGI battle with little or no emotion. Perhaps it would have turned out better if Mr. Campbell played on his own strengths of actor interaction and gave Hal a humanoid to face off with. Hector Hammond, especially played by the wonderful Peter Scarsgaard, is a great antagonist in the comics and would have worked here.

I genuinely like the movie, really like Green lantern, my 1st choice for super power would be a lantern ring. the biggest/best thing I like about this movie was the creativity in the constructs. If the movie & shows I've ever seen a green lantern in, they rarely if ever get very creative with what a green lantern can do compared to the comic book. It's always really basic stuff but not this movie. Sure some of it is goofy but that's partly the point, if you could create anything you can think of, some of it is gonna be pretty crazy and/or goofy.

I think the movie was intentionally goofy and over the top, because that is at the character’s core. A movie about a character whose powers are fueled by imagination and which weakness is the color yellow or despair must be fantastic. This was done before super hero flics turned into gag comedy, and it was refreshing.

I'd always love the 2011 Green Lantern film because i don't even hate the film despite they made his suit too CGI. If Ryan Reynolds Green Lantern succeeded DC, maybe other DC characters like The Flash, Wonder Woman & Aquaman should be introduced in Green Lantern's universe by casting like Jamie Alexander as Wonder Woman, Zac Efron or Dave Franco (9 years younger to Reynolds) as The Flash.

This would be a great way for DC since DC never got to touch & cast a former Disney Channel star, I could barely see Troy Bolton's actor as The Flash.

Soooooo...I enjoyed the green lantern movie. Green Lantern has always been my favorite super hero (Jon Stewart version to be precise) and I felt Ryan Reynolds was amazing! There were definitely issues but I never disliked the movie as much as most ppl I know! Thanks for the hype Ryan! Bad dog Doug...show the movie some love!

I actually always liked this movie, Just the villain looks not enough scary and its size and death are not plausible, but Hal Jordan outfit and actor are cool and the space scenes beautiful. But I am Just a humble movie lover who wants to dive into a fantasy so I guess being less critical I have more fun. I am excited to watch James Gun version and would be lovely to have Ryan Reynolds in the cast again with his wonderful wife, and perhaps their children too ❤

I actually really liked the green lantern movie when it came out. I definitely understand the criticisms but I was excited by the thought of it getting a sequel back in the day

Green Lantern is my favorite hero outside of the Batfamily. Wish he was represented better in the DCEU.

There were elements that I didn't like, such as making Hal TOO much of a big screw-up in the beginning - "There's water in the tap," and the pathetic birthday gift that he brought. And yeah, "Mr. Potato Head." But I still love watching his final fight with Parallax. Reciting the Oath to get his second wind gave me chills.

I’ve liked this movie since it came out. I actually have it on DVD, lol. Granted, I’m not really a huge Lantern fan, or DC fan for that matter, but I’ve always enjoyed this movie.

Agreed. I still rewatch it on occasion, although I might shut it off early when the fart shows up.

The director's/ extend cut was better it shows more of Hal's perspective of fear and his father's death. Which I theory complete the green lantern mythology. The sense of being human, making mistakes, fear and happiness..... How life makes a person making them a human with flaws can still be a hero.

I think GL hurt more than other DC flops. As you said, Reynolds was a great choice for Hal, the trailers looked exciting, and it was being released right after the Blackest Night event, which really breathed new life into the GL Corps. This lead to a lot of high expectations that were simply not met with the film we received.

I liked it a lot till the end. You can tell the ending was questionable but I loved that it was going in the direction of the villain going to the yellow and that a squeal would have been the bomb leading into Batman vs Superman where the yellow lantern gives Superman the ring. Yeah yeah I know that’s part of the Injustice League but so good

Honestly as far as giving an origin story and explaining Oa and the green lantern corp it did it great job. Next lantern movie should NOT include any “how the ring can to ….” Same as we don’t need to know how Bruce the child became Batman after his parents murder. Enough with origin set up and flashbacks, get to the real story.
