Doctor Strange is one of our favorite MCU movies. It introduces a timeliness hero into the Marvel Cinematic Universe--and gives him new depth and character growth. Stephen Strange would go on to become instrumental in the fabric of the MCU, and carry a franchise of his own.
And 2011's Green Lantern is the opposite of all that. It's an ugly, horrible train wreck form start to finish...but did you ever notice it's the same movie as Doctor Strange? In this video we break down all the similarities, but also explain why one movie is a crowning achievement, and the other a defining failure.

#DoctorStrange #GreenLantern #SceneFights
A while back we made a video talking about why Doctor Strange is such a beautiful and underrated film. I really love this movie. But the funny thing is that Doctor Strange is basically the same as Green Lantern. And I’m not joking, because after we go over all the similarities, you will be surprised just how similar these two movies are. Though of course, one is an extremely good and underrated movie, and the other one has a villain with a nut-sack on their head.
Looking at these movies side-by-side gives us a fascinating study about how the execution of storytelling is so crucial and is the key difference that shows why one movie is like this…. And the other is this…
Both movies tell the story of a guy who’s the best at what he does, but his arrogance and fear of failure hold him back from being truly great. This makes the hero into a reckless a-hole… who’s also a terrible driver.
The love interest is the hero’s ex, but it’s complicated since they work together. But she’s the only person in his life that sees his true potential.
After a bad accident, the hero loses his job, which represents his loss of purpose. For Strange, it’s his hands, and for Hal, it’s his ability to fly.
At a low point, the hero meets this guy who tells him about an ancient order that protects the universe. Also a little bit of rivia, did you know that Boba Fett himself played Abin Sur?
The hero travels far away and joins the ancient order. Though at first he is met with some hostility from some of the other members.
The hero is given a ring, and there’s this green-glowing-thingy that allows the hero to create constructs with his mind.
At first, the hero has problems using his new powers, because the energy is dependent on will power, and the hero has some major low-confidence problems to resolve first.
But once the hero overcomes this hurdle, he masters his new power very quickly.
The bad guy of both movies used to be a member of the ancient order, but after using the forbidden energy, he was corrupted and turned to evil.
It turns out that the bad guy is just a tool for the real villain, who’s this powerful space entity that consumes worlds. The secondary villain draws the energy from the evil entity, which turns his forehead into a giant nut-sack. Oh wait, that’s just Green Lantern.
The ancient order is led by this ancient bald leader, who’s really powerful, and is the only one that defeated the bad guy in the past. Also, it’s revealed that the ancient leader uses the same energy of the evil entity.
At a certain point in the movie, the villain morality injures the baled mentor, but they only die after giving the hero a pep-talk.
There’s also this frenemy character, who is completely devoted to the order, but he clearly has a dark side. When the frenemy discovers that the ancient leader used the forbidden energy, all his beliefs in the order shatter, and he starts his path to the dark side.
Also, there’s a point later in the movie, where the hero has to convince the frenemy to help him save the world.
Another member of the order is this guy who acts all tough, and is hostile toward the hero at first, but turns out he’s all talk. In the end, he becomes besties with the hero.
At some point, the hero reveals his new powers to his love interest, which freaks her out at first. But later she ends up saving the hero’s life from the bad guy. Also, she makes fun of the group the hero joined.
There is a scene where a female character gives the hero a pep-talk about how fear is his greatest obstacle.
Despite the ancient order having many powerful members, most of them get wiped out pretty easily, so it’s up to the hero to save the day on his own.

I honestly never realised these similarities between Doctor Strange and Green Lantern until this video, and it is honestly mind boggling to think about. I quite like the first Doctor Strange film and think the character is really intriguing especially with his arrogance and understanding of selflessness. Green Lantern is also one of my favourite superheroes and I personally think the concept of the character is ingenious and very unique. I love the Geoff John's Green Lantern comic run so much, however I am not the biggest fan of the film and do have some very strong feelings against it, yet I do see some positive aspects to the film such Mark Strong being a fantastic casting for Sinestro. Green Lantern has so much cinematic potential with such great stories and characters with compelling themes and interesting world building. There is so much potential for even a saga of Green Lantern films (if executed well). Hopefully Green Lantern will be rebooted and finally get a good film. I'm even writing my own Green Lantern film franchise script, with a full cast and stories I would love to tell in a full saga.

One huge difference is about how heroes are discovered. Green lantern was all about “being chosen”. So the handsome, charming, bro is also just given a magical ring. Sure he is fired, but he could return flying, just not as a fighter pilot. His minor villain was a nerd who was corrupted by his ambition to learn. That really resembles a jock beating up on a nerd: not very heroic. Meanwhile, Dr. Strange has a very different arc. The future hero is a brain surgeon, so it is heavily implied that he is super smart. He might also be a bro. But this time, the hero seems more like an arrogant jerk. goes out and asks for help. Finally, Strange is turned away and forced to find humility to learn how to use his power.

The hero's fall in Green Lantern just seems forced and poorly written, like you said, there are no stakes, all he needs is for someone else to put him back in the sky, with a new plane, or a force that he can use to make him a new plane, literally, and of course, the secondary villain in Green Lantern is a joke, both visually and in the plot, since its clear from the start that he has no real power or abilities, but just corrupted by an external force. Also, Paralax is just a generic rage monster, while Dormamu is a bit more manevolent, although both are basically CGI clouds.

There will eventually be another Green Lantern movie, they just need to rethink the plot. The source material is just as good as any other hero series, it just needs to be rethought how to realize it in a movie, visually and plot wise. They did a real good job with John Stewart's lantern in the animated series, and he is basically the same character as movie Hal Jordan, both being US soldiers being given 'bonus' alien powers, but John Stewart just takes the lantern corps more seriously, and can 'sell' the absurdity of the GL corps to the audience better, and better integrate it with his Earth life.

I also enjoyed Green Lantern. Sure, not as much as say Dr. Strange 2 which was fantastic but GL was still a good movie. I don't understand why a LOT of people put so much hate into some of these movies. They are supposed to be COMIC BOOK movies. That alone tells you fantastical. Not every comic was a huge hit like say House of M either. That doesn't mean you can't still enjoy them.

I think the difference is how the plot was implemented. The casting in doctor strange was spot on. Benedict is perfect as the arrogant Strange....reynold was an absolutely horrible Hal Jordan. Like Hal is special because he is the first human lantern but Reynolds was just his usual Reynolds/van wilder/Deadpool persona. It didn't fit at all. He was obnoxious, goofy etc it was a horrible representation of Hal Jordan

The stupidest thing about Green Lantern was when the doctor said Abin Sur was earth's first contact with an alien. There are no DC storylines in which Green Lantern predates Superman.
@sprinkle61
@sprinkle61 2 жыл бұрын
Superman 'looks human' and can pass as a human, so in a way, his alienness doesn't count, until he is fully grown and starts rocking that alien power, at which point, in the comic world, he is sort of 'grandfathered in' to being an Earthling, even though he is not, and it never really matters to the comic plot that he is not human. I actually had this basic thing happen in real life, where my manager at a pizza store was revealed to be an illegal alien from Mexico, but she had clearly grown up in the US, and could speak perfect English. Of course, in the real world, which side of an imaginary line you came out of the womb on really matters, even if the person had no choice in the matter, and she lost her job, and was deported to a land where she would clearly have trouble fitting in, and lost the life she was doing fine with here, kind of like the plot of the movie Born in East LA, but with an unhappy ending :(

Those were exactly my thoughts even when i was watching Dr. Strange in the theater. The Marvel writers even turned Mordo from a totally evil wizard into a control freak mentor like Sinestro. The biggest flaw GL had was that the space monster that has been killing seasoned GLs doesn't understand basic gravity so doesn't know it shouldn't get to close to a star while in Dormamu's case is explicitly stated that despite being omnipotent, time is a unknown concept for him, so he doesn't know how to get out of the loop.
@MrLee-cy1pw
@MrLee-cy1pw 2 жыл бұрын
I agree 💯 about Dormammu but I liked what they did with Mordo. He was way too cartoonishly evil almost like a Scooby Doo villain imo. His character description is "I want to take over the world but first I must defeat my arch nemesis Dr. Strange!" and that's as far as it goes. But I just started reading the Dr. Strange comics so I'm still reading the earlier stories. Maybe he gets better but so far I think MCU Mordo is a far superior character.

@sprinkle61
@sprinkle61 2 жыл бұрын
To be blunt, the uniforms were comic-accurate but terrible looking, especially the masks. They just don't make sense in the modern context, since the Lantern Corps members don't need to hide their identities, and the CGI was meh. They just ditch the masks entirely in the animated Justice League, and it works much better there. They also just massively underused Sinestro. They really missed a chance for him to use his new ring to upstage the very concept of the GL corps having a silly 'video game weak point' against the yellow fear power, which could have really sold the Sinestro's 'turn to the dark side', but they clearly didn't want to complicate the final battle by having our hero upstaged by a mentor figure, even a little. Its unfortunate, because Paralax being such a poor villain, it just can't carry the movie's plot to its conclusion, and just comes across as a joke, even though its supposed to be world-endingly powerful.

This reminds me of how much Dr. Strange wants to be in control even when nothing is going for him. People might think that is pure arrogant in nature but that is just his most powerful weapon in the armoury. Overconfidence is one thing, but self-belief is THE one that can give HOPE in any difficult situation. His first film deals with that aspect, It's almost 7 years down the line with him living almost infinity lifetimes with Time Stone. He still wants to keep things in check. It's because he was certain he could cast the spell easily - he had done it before, as explained in a little joke to Wong. If Peter sat down and didn't say a word, the spell would've been cast without a hitch. I wouldn't say it was reckless to cast the spell, it was only reckless not to explain everything to Peter beforehand. Everything else he does in the movie is to mitigate any and all consequences.

You forgot the part where Benedict Cumberbatch is way better actor than Ryan Renolds; now we know, he’s been basically Deadpool every movie lol.

Disagree but fair review. Can you please have a look and do a vid on Speed Racer? So much commentary within the film Then in the final act he goes around the big bend tethering. Next lap he jump/dancers over the edge to show he is free. Spoiler he wins But the journey and storytelling to get us there wad.great and I'd appreciate you having a look

Green Lantern would have to be a series to be told properly. The CW needs to pick it up.

Pues quizas en cosas pero no tan parecidos, porque strange es de las artes místicas y magia, y la linterna verde no hay nada de magia y cosas por el estilo

By a few weeks, do you mean 4 months? Because that's what the side thing that lists it at the top says. Time no longer has any meaning.

Once, long ago, a foolish younger me ventured into a theater and hopped into Green Lantern after Transformers: Dark of the Moon. While it was a decline in quality overall, what stayed with me was the carnage. Seeing Decepticon weapons tear through regular, fleeing citizens with terrifying efficiency was only made worse when watching Parallax reach earth and make landfall. Seeing every burst of yellow as the cloud rolled through structure and crowd futility and terror two parts of a neapolitan ice cream sandwich of trauma…
