I always used to hand sketch reinforcement layout in bridge piers as a way of making sure the detail was pourable/buildable.

Learning by explaining things to others (or an imaginary friend lol) even has a name - the Feynman technique

I was just sharing with someone at T'giving that when I went back to get my masters in early 2000's, that folks were taking statistics and using software and had NO IDEA of the underlying calculations. In other words, the wouldn't even know if there would be a question on the result. SMDH... they weren't teaching the theory and calculations at a Masters Degree level. Drove me nuts. Ha! And at T'giving, at my guest table was a statistics teacher. I expounded against it for 5 minutes.. then realized I had just ruined a dinner party and insulted the host's family member. Oh well!

Do structural engineers visit often the construcion site? I heard that either you stay the whole time at the office (structural engineers) or you constantly go to the construcion site (constructor engineers). Thank you so much for the video, it has pretty good recommendations for s.e.

I go to visit site very often. I work for a smaller company atm and I’m out of the office a lot. My advice would be to get to site every opportunity you get. You can learn a lot there.

I do agree with you, as a structural design Professor I teach to draw by hand and do the calculations before allowing my students to use CAD, write apps or use spreadsheets.

Bullshit 😂 In UK “hand calcs” are so “important” because client is charged on hourly rates. You re not able to “verify by hand” proper 3D structure behaviour for example wind load applied acc to EC acting from 360 degrees
