Donnie doesn't understand that crowd size isn't necessarily an indicator of popularity. The New York Jets could sell out every single one of their home games at MetLife Stadium, but that doesn't mean that the team is successful and it doesn't mean that they're the most popular team that calls MetLife their home. It doesn't even mean that they're the most popular team in the geographic location or that most of the people within that geographic location like football at all. It just means that you're attracting the most loyal supporters to a single location. A vast majority of the people within the area could still dislike you or not even care about you. So it's a very shallow and unscientific way to measure popularity, but Donnie is himself exceptionally shallow and unscientific. He just sees a large crowd fawning over him and equates that with "Everyone must love me." It feeds his vapid narcissism.
