Much of the continent of Europe is facing a difficult winter ahead.
Russia has once again shut down the crucial Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline to Germany.
It's raised fears of shortages and possible blackouts in the coming months.
Russian authorities say the pipeline was shut to repair a leak.
But European leaders have rejected this - accusing Russia of weaponising energy in response to the Ukraine sanctions.
So, how will Europe cope with this unprecedented gas shortage?

Theres only like a handful countries in Europe who buys gas from Russia and Germany who's the biggest one, the gas only represents measly 10% of their power produce. Gazprom did not withheld delivery and rather stuck to its contractual obligations ... as early as May Ukraine’s gas grid operator cut Russian gas flow to Europe ... gas flow via the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, was reduced in July because of a faulty turbine which was sent for repair and withheld for over a month in Canada (Siemens) and still is not delivered and now, September, Nord Stream 1 is shut down (initially for only three days) for planed scheduled maintenance but being shut down entirely and indefinitely over discovered oil leaks on three vital turbines ... well, propagandist will say: such are all made up problems by Putin to create political pressure, yet totally disregarding the fact that there is a fully operational (Russia paid) pipeline ready to jump in, which is Nord Stream 2 ... it's even worse, the 80% (plus) storage Germany claimes to have is actually Gazproms own gas storage service buffer in Rehden/Germany which Germany stole (took over by decree) in April 2022 ... absurdly enough Germany still has a contractual low price option on Russian gas, some of it Germany sold (backflow) to Poland for a higher price (Poland and Bulgaria stopped paying for gas via the Gas for Ruble scheme and was shut off in April) ... so, who is the fool now ... it's all soo pathetic it's unbelievable ...

well you can, if the gas station did not have any one else to sell to. there were reports this week that russia was burning a lot of gas at the finnish border. this si done becue that have a exxes of gas, and no where to pump it, thus its a total loss. Russia could go the LNG rout. but there are some major problems. first is the climate, not good for LNG, second is the technology, that is from the west, AKA not available, and the third is the economy, its in a downwards spiral so no new pipes to other places for a long while.

The pice cap is not intended just at Russia but to "punish" OPEC for failing to increase production to lower prices. Draghi and Yellen then decided the G7 should be a buyers club dictating prices. The cap would force OPEC to cut prices to compete. Of course, this will have a major backfiring effect and is likely to push the GCC and OPEC+ to end the petrodollar.

Considering the Canadians are withholding 5 more turbines (they sent one of 6 to Germany) and Portovaya is down to one functioning compressor out of five with no backup (the system has 5 large turbines, 1 large emergency-only backup turbine and 2 small ones - there is one large and one small left), and now the last turbine has an oil leak. So, its either maintain or blow up the compressor station. Scholz begged the Canadians to send them back during his visit, but who knows how long that will take. It's a critical issue.

I’m a mechanical engineer with speciality in gas compressors, almost 28 years experience, I’ve worked with and an decades long friend with one of Siemens turbine contract engineers he’s an ex Rolls Royce turbine engineer. This is the last drive turbine for the compressors that was operational, the turbine is basically a JET ENGINE! It has two high pressure oil lubricant leaks, news is LYING, Siemens would NEVER AUTHORISE isolation of two lubricant lines, and even if they did the turbine engineer would NEVER sign it off for safe operation it would suffer a catastrophic failure with high torque load very quickly!!! The problem is the parts they sent to Canada got held up so long by the Canadians, and now they were just about to start to increase the flows again a new part has broken down. So now it will probably be the same issues with Canada holding on to the parts for a few months again. Meanwhile, winter is coming. The biggest joke is the West trying to price cap oil. The truth? Well she's still hidden, you always get a glimps of it only. What's good in this "crisis" is that my country will get away from natural gas much faster as in the past. In the end, Russia will have huge problems to sell enough gas and oil to other countries and wont reach the volume it sold to Europe. Yes it is a task for Germany and all other countries who still depend on gas supplies from Russia. And, Russia has no fleet to distribute LNG, no terminals, no pipeline to China or India. And I don't think China is that much interested to depend itself on Russia, also out of a long history of tensions with Russia. For now it looks bleak for European countries which use Russian gas, but that's a momentum only. And if we look at Russias dependencies on Western tech in all parts of its economy that bites Russia already and will become real difficult in the next two, three years! Even the used Western tech to get oil and gas out of the ground makes Russia very vulnerable with these sanctions. From drilling to turbines, to robots and producing lines, Russia uses western technology nearly everywhere!

Russian gas is cheaper due to shorter distance compared to America. America is a much less reliable supplier compared to Russia. The reason is America has chestnuts frying in every partof the world. They have conflicting interests all the time and when needed in self interest , think nothing of ditching their friends. Europeans unions bullshit about not wanting Russian gas is bravado and nothing else. Their products are already overpriced and with high energy prices, their industries will close down. The normal German always has been living on a shoestring budget , its only the German state which is rich and first world.

EU has not been 'dependent on Russian gas'; they have been dependent on 'Russian cheap gas'. They could have at any time diversified to LNG from other sources, but at such a high price that it made absolute nonsense. US switching to other sources for LNG will transform whatever is left of the EU into a third world country. They have prospered solely on the basis of reliable and low Russian energy costs. By the same token, the US/EU has prospered solely on the backs of cheap Chinese labor costs. If the western world keeps tweaking the Dragon's tail, they may find themselves totally cut off from Chinese manufactured goods which will result in absolute chaos. The western world is less than 20% of the world population. I am sure that Russia and China will figure out a way to survive and thrive on the basis of trade with the remaining 80% of the world population. The US and the EU are essentially bankrupt with unsustainable debt/GDP ratios, even the fumes they are running on from Russia and China will soon evaporate.

@@sparkie996 No, he is right. Nordstream 2 was planned precisely for the event of of problems with Nordstream 1 plus the closure of the final of Germany's 6 nuclear plants (3 in 2021 and 3 in 2022). The idea was to move onto gas-plants and keep energy flows constant in the event of technical problems. The real situation is that Canada revealed during Scholz's visit that they withheld not just 1 but 5 more turbines (6 total) of the 8 required for the functioning of NS1 under Ukrainian pressure. So, the compressor station at Portovaya is down to one compressor out of five working with no back-up system, and the leak is on the last working large turbine. So, until they receive the equipment from Canada, nothing can be done. The reason that gas is being flared/burnt, is that gas cannot be suspended midair indefinitely as pressure builds if not pressurized into the pipeline and can cause explosions and a major environmental catastrophe. This isn't Russian bot stuff. I had to do a report, and got all the real information and had a long chat with Enbridge Canada on pipelines and compressor stations, and that is the situation faced at Portovaya.

Nordstream2 was the backup in case Nordstream 1 required maintenance. Some of the maintenance parts also restricted due to sanctions. Another issue is also if Russia gives reasons for the shut down no one believes. What's coming is well deserved. SANCTIONS WORKS BOTH WAYS.

Nordstream 2 was an addition, not a backup for Nordstream 1. None of the maintenance parts are under sanction, the energy market so far was left out of the sanctions. Siemens Energy which did the maintenance also said that the current issue can be easily fixed and if necessary spare parts are already there to replace the damaged parts. With other words it is not even a big deal to get it fixed. Russia uses this pipeline which ran fine for 11 years as excuse now. Everybody knows that. But as you correctly mentioned sanctions work both ways... and the flow of necessary money end with them.

@@SuperSampling Well, first they have to sell it cheaper because there is less demand for Russian gas (e.g. the large discount of oil for India is a prime example for this). Building pipelines to China or India takes many years and is very costly. Turning it into LNG requires to build new factories to liquify the gas which is not going to be easy since the tech products are being sanctioned. Even if they manage it it will take lots of time and money.... with the insecurity involved that the G7 impose a price limit which in the end would make shipping oil and gas almost impossible. The EU is going to live with the higher prices eventhough it is going to be difficult. Russia on the other hand already today is consuming high amounts of its money reserves every month and on top of that half of these reserves can not even be used anymore.

The main cause of this was not covered. Is the unending NATO expansion worth the cost they are just starting to see. The same NATO countries that supply endless weapons to keep the Ukrain conflict going are the same countries complaining about the energy supply disruptions. Bleeding the Russians has a logical response which Europeans were not expecting? The Ukrain conflict was an avoidable conflict but was allowed to proceed since it was thought the Russian economy could be neutralized.
