From the new iPhones with 5G capabilities to the latest warplanes such as the F-35, semiconductor chips have become the backbone of new technologies. These microchips are at the core of new industrial trends such as robotics, nanotechnology, autonomous driving, 5G or digital ecosystems.
And if we’re talking about chips, we need to talk about Taiwan. In this video we tell you why, for many, Taiwan has become the most important country in the world, why the shortage of chips has set alarms off for half the planet and what consequences the new technological pulse between East and West may have.

@@shosecor4986 As Taiwan transform from a absolute regime of KMT dominant country to a democracy under the Taiwanese president Lee Tung Hui, there is gradually growing Tainwanese personal identification than Chinese personal identification. Currently our government and people tend to recognize ourself as a separate country than true China. The only problem is we didn't declare independence from ROC and all our membership in international participation were inherited from ROC dictatorship era. Thus there are times we still work under the name of ROC or sometimes even claimed the whole Mongolia, most of us, especially the young ones, consider ourself to be a separate country from PRC, rather than the so called true China.

@@penguinreigns8283 The Taiwanese people actually don't want anything to do with China. The ROC (the government which currently occupies Taiwan and makes those silly territorial claims you refer to) was founded in China in 1912 when Taiwan was part of Japan and fled from China to Taiwan in 1949 after getting kicked out of China by the communists. The ROC is a foreign government in exile and does *not* represent the Taiwanese people. The Taiwanese actually preferred Japanese rule over the ROC/KMT because the ROC/KMT was a brutal military dictatorship for decades and seen as a foreign entity/invader as well. But since the ROC became democratic in the 1990's, the Taiwanese have been able to vote the KMT party (which is from China) out of power more often than not, replacing it with the Taiwanese DPP party.

The official country name of Taiwan is Republic of China (R. O. C.), which means the original Chinese Republic created by Dr. Sun, Yat Sen in China in 1912. However, after World II, in 1945, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) started the civil war against the central government of R. O. C., who suffered from the 8-year war invaded by the Japanese Empire. Unfortunately, the war-weakened central government of R. O. C. lost the civil war and then moved to Taiwan in 1949. Since then, the central government of R. O. C. has been continuing its governance in this country over Taiwan.

Had we consistently placed liberty above comfort and profit, world would not be in the place it is today. CCP is the cost of our complacency, that’s standing on the cusp of world conquest... primarily by means of subversion. One could argue that right now, they’re following old maxim, namely “don’t interrupt your enemy when it is busy destroying itself”. So while current administration is busy erasing American heritage, history and culture - the party doesn’t see the need to waste boots on the ground of a crumbling empire. Taiwan, on the other hand though, is one delicious fruit that they pine...apple after.

@@writer684 The godfather of Taiwan's semiconductor industry, Morris Chang, also the founder of TSMC, used to be an executive engineer at TI before establishing TSMC in Taiwan back in 1980s. It's a long story to tell. Tech transfer also involved Japan and other European countries. But one major reason for Taiwan to be able to dominate global chip manufacture is that for decades, the best students and the smartest kids have either got into medicine practice or hardcore engineering/science such as EE, ME, CE, material science, physics, and chemistry etc. This tradition has established a rich and resourceful talent pool that is hard to replace in anytime soon. In the US, it's otherwise. Smart people prefer to work in more lucrative professions such as lawyer, Wall Street, and nowadays, CS !

The automakers created the current chip shortage by first canceling orders when the times were tough and now double booking their orders. There is indeed a shortage now but the scale of the shortage is greatly exaggerated due to the double booking. And it doesn’t matter whether new foundries are built in the US, Europe, or Japan, because the current shortage has nothing to do with where the chips are made. We can also expect the chip market to crash due to extreme excess capacity a few years from now with everybody rushing to offer subsidies to get a foundation of their own.

@seraphina985
@seraphina985 3 жыл бұрын
Correct both figures technically refer to income but revenue is the gross income figure and income is the net income figure. Thus income will always be at least somewhat lower than revenue well in theory a business that is operated by unpaid labor, steals all its supplies, never delivers any goods, and evades all taxes could make these two numbers the same but income can never be the higher of the two. Also, such an operation would hardly be a business hell even most criminal enterprises would stop short of being quite that bold as the unwelcome attention from authorities would be similarly extreme heh.

If you didn't know, the smaller you can make them, the better. It means you will be able to fit more of them in any object. Sadly we are reaching the physical limits, which might be a problem if we want to keep improving our computers.
@user-qn6yt3zx3w
@user-qn6yt3zx3w 3 жыл бұрын
@@MichaelDavis-mk4me unfortunately, it’s one of the few things in the world I do know something about. What you’re talking about is “feature-size” and represents the physical size of the gate on a CMOS transistor. The smaller the size, the more can fit into a given die-size. But more crucially, the smaller the transistor, the less power it consumes and the less capacitance it has. The lower the capacitance, the higher the switching frequency (GHz). TSMC is leading the world in process technologies with 5nm today. “The thinnest semiconductors” is a misnomer. All silicon semiconductors (the most common kind) are about the same thickness.

The founder of TSMC was an engineer who was educated and worked in the United States for 20 years before going back to Taiwan and working for the government of Taiwan's ITRI Industrial Technology Resource Institute. ITRI was basically an institution built on learning and transferring the know how of how to make computer chips from America and the West to Taiwanese businesses. And this includes academia and private industry. And the West supported this because Taiwan (ROC) is an ally of the United States and the West and has been so since WW II. Therefore there was never any roadblock to stop them from developing their chip industry. Also TSMC was founded as a joint venture with Philips Electronics and the Taiwanese government. One of the key milestones in the development of TSMC was the assistance they got from RCA in training engineers on how to make chips. But keep in mind, back then most of the chips they made were for things like DVD drives and so forth and to this day most chips made are not for high end PCs. In fact Taiwan started out as the maker of all the various components in the computer/electronics supply chain such as circuit boards, computer cases, phone cases, keyboards and so forth long before they even got the contract for the Iphone. And it wasn't until later, after AMD failed to keep up with Intel in manufacturing advanced chips that TSMC even became a big player in higher end chips.
