Because they've grown up. Not that complicated. They are different than the angry youth they once were. As much as I love tool, I think it's cruel to have so much expectation for an album whose members have evolved and moved on creatively. No wonder they have a rep of not really liking their fans

I think the fact that they're on a high pedestal is a perfect reason to appreciate and accept whatever they decide to release. But I ask, what exactly would make them LIKE their fans? It's kind of funny that older fans have already experienced all of this and heard the same excuses before. I remember when it took 5 years (a fairly long time in those days) for Lateralus to come out, and the band was telling people that it was because their hands had been tied with the Volcano record company lawsuit. That album was at least very much worth the wait, and everyone got excited that the follow up would surely come out in a year or two. Then 5 more years goes by, a couple of members mumbled something about some insurance company lawsuit, which I kind of rolled my eye at, and then we got 10,000 Days. I'll keep my opinions to myself about how much I thought that one was worth the wait. Then after it had been another 8 or 10 years, Adam says "We would have had an album out a long time ago...but we’ve been discouraged and distracted by this major lawsuit" i.e. the Cam de Leon lawsuit. After going through all this for a quarter of a century following this band, I'm sorry to say but that excuse fell on my deaf ears. I would be a lot more sympathetic if they just told the truth: they're getting older and they're just not really an active, working band anymore. They're semi-retired, and have been for a long time. That's fine, but call it like it is, don't keep stringing people along saying that it will be out next year and it's all because of some lawsuit. To put things in perspective: we've now waited as long for a new Tool album as my dad's generation waited for bands like KISS and Black Sabbath to reunite their classic lineups in the mid-90's. Let that sink in. I think that's pretty much the same thing that's going on here: we're not waiting for a new album from an active band, we're waiting for the reunion of an aging nostalgia act. At least those bands didn't insult their fans by keeping their hopes up that a new album was always just around the corner the whole time.

I would honestly laugh my ass off. With the way they have jerked people around and given false hope over the years, it would be a mild dose of karma. They should have been tight lipped about it all with minor updates as a band to avoid all the contradictions. They have hyped it up so much that nothing will ever match the hype and they know it. When you are writing music in the pressure cooker, it's never as good as something that flows out organically. Bands have proven that many times over.

@Ralph Richter I'm pretty sure that if they had even one full song done, then they likely would have released it over the decade-plus hiatus. No band would have new material, and keep that shit a secret for over a decade.
@virgillewis62405 жыл бұрын
Adam Fowler Guns N Roses did. There’s a lot more that goes into the album making process than you think. There’s the writing, which for tool given their songs are so complex and long would for fucking ever. There’s the actual recording which is especially hard for them because two of their members have side projects. And there’s the mixing and master which also takes an extremely long time

@@virgillewis6240 I'm familiar with the writing/recording process. Complexity of music shouldn't hinder the time-frame like you would presume. Being tied up with other projects though, is actually the position I would more agree on. Tool has intricate musical standards, but such a factor should never be mentioned for justifying an abnormally long hiatus. Bc there are many more progressive rock/metal bands with side projects and such, just as well. Hell, look at Steven Wilson from porcupine tree...or Mariusz from Riverside/lunatic soul..
