My current favorite SG players are: Angus Young, Adrian Smith, Phil X, Chris Buck... First time I saw an SG in person was on my first guitar class in '99 and I immediately fell in love in it. Some 8-9 years later I finally bought their cheapest Special Faded series in 2008. and it was with me ever since and I absolutely love it. What I love the most is the rawness of it - you can either hate it or love it, not be indifferent about it.

I received a Gibson SG from a friend of mine who was clearing out his collection as he was nearing his death. I was shocked at how versatile a standard SG is. I had always thought about it as a straight ahead rock machine but it has these quiet intimate moments inside of it too!

I just bought my first sg. It’s quite a special buy because it’s from my birth year of 1992 and was advertised as “vintage”. Its a custom shop edition in emerald green and the previous owner installed some Tim Shaw PAFs from 1981. It’s such a great playing and sounding guitar. A bit more mid-focused and bright than a Les Paul which i like, much more compact and way, way less heavy. Never thought I’d be so much into it, guess it took me 31 years as well (okay, of which 18 playing years…)

I love the irony of this video opening with Baba O'Reily and you're playing a model SG that Pete Townsend played through the 1960s and early 70s, although I don't think his had a whammy bar on it. (He played it in The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus, at Woodstock, and on Live at Leeds) I love the sound one gets from P-90 pick ups. (I own an SG with P-90s) Most of my life I've been an SG player, but now warming up to Les Pauls, even though I find them to be rather heavy, and sometimes cumbersome, they do deliver a sound that no other guitar can make. I remember the first time I saw somebody play an SG was my local garage band on my block. What really sold me, though was seeing a video of Black Sabbath for the first time. It's safe to say that I'll be a loyal SG player until I die, but I'm not adverse to playing Les Pauls, or even other brands like Fender, depending on the style of music, and what kind of sound the song calls for. (Yes, I even have a few Fenders in my collection)

My issue with the SG is the location of the "waist" on the body. If you're playing in a sitting position with the guitar on your leg it puts the headstock further away from your body, meaning you have to reach further for the lower frets.

Clapton with Colisseum live in Aberystwyth Kings Hall in 1967 (Uni gig) yes he was standing in with them!! I bought an Gibson SG Special Walnut in 1970 from Rumbelows in Reading. Upgraded it with diMarzios. I sold it in 1993 when I “gave up electric”. kept my Gibson J45. I am asking myself why dont I have one now given I have Gibson LP studio JP spec and Gibson LP DC with P90s. I shall go try one next weekend.😅😅😅😅

Here in McDonald land there’s a chain called “Best Buy” that sells electronics and appliances. Few years back (lordy maybe 10 by now) they decided to take a shot at some of Guitar Center’s market share. Apparently it didn’t go too well. Thus, I was able to walk out with a brand new “Batwing” SG for $600US. Year or so later I had a luthier park the Maestro vibrato on it. TOTALLY transformed it in the best way possible. This led to a recent Gamble. I bought the Epi Bonamassa SG Custom. I REALLY dig it. The X-factor position for me is the middle “in phase” bridge/middle combination. It’s like a glorified super fat strat neck. Gamble paid off. Love it.

I just picked up a Vintage brand SG copy with the goofy faux relicing. Turned out to be a great guitar! The Wilkinson pickups and hardware are perfectly useable. Nothing too radical, but nicely balanced and voiced. No Neck Dive!!! Though it's lighter than my Les Pauls, it still has enough mass to it to keep it even keel. And, the neck feels almost identical to my friend's much more expensive Gibson and I picked this up for $150 U.S. with a case. Sometimes, a great guitar finds you at just the right time and under the right circumstances (I'd been thinking of getting an SG prior). Great video, as usual, sir.

Ollie Halsall. Magnificent, innovative player, always with a white SG. Sister Rosetta Tharpe, white SG Custom and fur coat! Jimi Hendrix looked pretty cool with a white Custom too. I have an original Custom from 1961, when it was still called a Les Paul Custom. I love it but it's an odd guitar; unplugged it sounds and feels like a banjo with asthma, but plugged in, it sounds magnificent. The previous owner was a record producer who used it as a 'get out of jail' card whenever a band he was working was taking too long to get a good guitar sound - the Custom was always the answer. It's weird also that despite that long, long neck, skimpy neck joint and general impression of frailty, the guitar is completely stable, never needs adjusting, and the neck is laser-straight. Every Les Paul I have is much more finicky. One of the most seductive guitars I ever played was a SG Junior from around 64 I think...absolutely different from my 61...so alive and resonant in the hands. Maybe it's all the metal in the Custom's trem tailpiece that gives it such a different feel, but now that I think of it I also used to own another SG Custom with a Vibrola trem, and that felt completely different again. By contrast, all the LPs I've played feel much more similar to each other.

Back in 77 Alex Harvey was due to appear on Sight and Sound,a BBC concert programme. He backed out and as a last minute replacement AC/DC stepped in, so I got to properly witness an SG in action and was simultaneously introduced to one of the most exciting rock bands ever. I played some unknown SG copy for a few years but never the real thing. Amusingly Angus was asked for his deep meaningful reason why he chose that guitar, and he replied the shape reminded him of the devil's horns. A proper rock and roll answer. I still think it's a brilliant looking guitar, it looks like it wants to be played. (Probably not by me though).

My first electric was an Epiphone SG made in Korea by Samick in the mid 90s. It had a lot of issues, but that was more due to it being a very budget guitar built to a price point rather than the design itself. It's quite a comfortable shape, especially when playing solos while seated. Unfortunately my guitar had horribly dark sounding pickups and lots of fret problems

When I think of SG players, I think first of the SG Special (P90s are in Specials) players, namely Pete Townsend, Carlos Santana, and Tony Iommi. Then Eric Clapton with The Fool SG, Duane Allman, Derek Trucks, and perhaps the most iconic SG player, Angus Young. Of course Sister Rosetta Tharp and Hendrix both were famous for playing SG Customs in the three pickup configuration, with Hendrix having supposedly recorded Red House using the SG. I like SGs more than any other Gibson, which is odd because I generally don’t like pointy guitars or those with Florentine cutaways. But something about the SG looks draw me to it. I’m primarily a single coil player so the SG Special with the '61 era smaller pickguard and smaller heal joint and necks is my favorite. The only one that I have now is a Standard with the batwing pickguard, bigger neck, and thicker heal joint. Even though I prefer the '61 in terms of looks, the Standard is a better workhorse because of its design and is less susceptible to heel joint damage which from experience is an expensive repair.

Being mainly a Strat player I’ve always thought the SG was ugly, but I figured if so many people were playing them they had to be at least good. In ‘05 I worked with a guy that was singer/ guitar player that had an SG standard. After the gig I asked if I could just try it, he agreed , I picked it up and plugged it in, and woah! The sound and feel … I thought, I need one! I offered to buy it off the guy and he declined. I ended up buying his Les Paul off of him, and that always stuck to me, he’d rather sell his LP rather than the SG. 🤔Great playing John, the sounds your getting off this is great 👍🏻

I've had an SG Standard since it was new in 1973. I've come to prefer a wider fingerboard but it is still a pretty good guitar. I think I first became aware of Pete Townsend playing an SG. But my favourite SG players were Micky Jones and Deke Leonard from Man, the latter of whom was very supportive when I was a young player.

The first electric I ever had was a god-aweful SG copy ( Diplomat brand) having two covered humbuckers and coloured red, of course. The amp I played thru was a solid stae amp on a six inch board inside a two speaker box, that was also horrible, even when I got a good strat, but the reason I got an SG was probably from seeing Carlos Santana in pictures, also Eric played a painted one in Cream, but i remeber kind of liking the symetrical look of it, unlike the later ones it had a pickguard that covered both sides, but after replacing it with the strat, I soon got a second hand Marshall super lead 1, and when I at last found a decent looking SG ( real one) I tried it out with the new amp ( Marshall). Now this SG had the nice double sided wide pickguard, like the one you played here, although I don't remember if it had the white layer on the pickguard, and the problem of those pickups into a dark sounding amp was just so dull tgat I had to sell it, or trade it ( I can't remember) but that sort of put me off those guitars, and probably those pickups too. Maybe if I had tgat guitar still it would sound brilliant thru a cleaner mire Fender style amp, but what did I know at the time? ( nothing) good gutars even ones from the other side of thebworld were relatively cheap then, so if I knew tgen what I know now, maybe I wouldn't have turned down the mighty SG, though I must say mist of the newer ones I've tried out seem either also dull sounding( like a strat but with no character- sort of card-board tone) or neck heavy, and the ones that aren't neck heavy are usually too heavy in the body. Not many if ones I've seen have whammies, or if tgey do, they aren't installed. I liked the sound Eric Johnson got -( duh!)- on that live at the Grove concert with bis old drummer and new bassist, but then Eric could have made my old one sound great too! Keep up the good work, John, and Jon-bot.

Someone else may have said this but Eric Johnson plays an SG when he’s going after specifically the Eric Clapton type of tone that he uses for things like last house on the block. There was a tour where he was using a les Paul instead for this job…sometimes even a firebird! I think he has a Gibson in rotation to do the ‘cream’ thing generally

On my 3rd SG, 1st one I had for a few years liked it, but preferred my other guitars (mostly a strat player then) eventually let it go, and then got another some time after and really got really into it, but some years later I sold it to finance a Mesa Express 5:50 2x12 combo...was a good amp, but a few months later sold it and regretted selling my SG...but it was one of those itches I had to scratch. Now a few years passed and I kept thinking why did I sell that SG..so I got another last year and have vowed to myself not to sell this one. The play of an SG is so nice and such an easy ride, the neck heavy thing is easily cured with a decent thick/wide leather type strap or one of those shoulder pads you can attach to a regular nylon strap...which was the cure for mine. Love the fat creamy tones of the SG, and one of the best tones in rock comes from an SG - in Angus Young. Still love my LP and Strats, Tele's etc and my 2 PRS Custom's being my 2 favourite guitars. The SG in terms of playability totally wins over a LP all day long. Great simple workhorse guitars. Like a Tele is to Fender so is the SG to Gibson methinks.

Your guitar playing is so relaxing and free flowing. Love the P90s, the rosewood fret board, the head stock, and the volume and tone knobs, but I have always hated the color, body shape, and the bulky, heavy bridges and tremolos they put on those things. It's weird, I loved that guitar when Tony Ioni played it with Black Sabbath. Listen to him play in albums like "Master of Reality". The guitar has a very nice sound. That guitar was originally called "Les Paul" but Les Paul didn't like it and he forced Gibson to take his name off of the guitar.

My first SG memory was Rick Parfitt from Quo using one on. The early recordings upto around 73, I believe he used an SG with just a P90 at the bridge position, ( had a poster on my wall ). The only reason he changed to his White Tele which he became renowned for playing, was because the SG was stolen on Tour in Europe. Also around that time Slade and obviously AC/DC were using the SG. 👍 Owned one myself and couldn't get on with it as the neck was like a baseball bat and had the worst neck dive I've ever experienced 👍

I have an Epiphone Prophecy SG. The only SG style I've ever had. Some days I love it some days I hate it. To other SG players, do you find the necks move too much when playing. For instance can get a soft vibrato effect very easily by moving neck back and forth. And cowboy chords are easy to pull sharp and flat.

One of the first Electric Guitars I ever played was an SG. At the time, I was focused on learning Classical Guitar. As one might imagine, it was the antithesis of everything I was familiar with playing. The SG was heavy, had neck dive, was uncomfortable to sit with, didn't resonant, I didn't like the way it looked, etc. But, it had an interesting distorted sound straight away and was loud and I liked, so at least I could see why it was played in big stadiums, arenas, and was perfectly suited for a different style of music than I was playing.

The first time I saw anyone playing an SG was Mike Alsup from Three Dog Night when I was very young. But later, seeing Pete and Carlos and Eric playing them made the real impact on me. My first really good guitar was (is - I still have it) a 68 SG Std with the biggest, fatest neck you'll ever see on an SG. As a result, I love fat necks. I now have a second SG as well - an SG Classic, which I consider to be a poor man's SG Special - not identical, but at least it has P90s, a bound fretboard and a resonably chunky neck (not huge, but big enough to please me). I love my SGs, but I love my Les Pauls and 335's equally. I would not be able to live with a typical skinny neck SG - not my thing.

For me the SG is a fun performance guitar. Very acrobatic and easy to sling around, jump, and dance with. I guess it depends on your body type, but I generally find it to be very ergonomic sitting or standing and will play the SG when I'm developing shoulder fatigue from my Les Paul or Strat. I can wear it a bit lower on my body and rest my strumming side a bit and still have nice upper fret access without wrist fatigue. Maybe it's my slim body and long wingspan but I have zero issues with fret access low or high. I also swap between the SG and other guitars all day, no problem. My only gripe is that I don't like the way they look. But it makes up for it in performance. I find that the neck dive, if any, helps keep me moving it around and wrestling with it, easy to sling back, clap, do a jig, then sling forward again and play.

I’ve never owned a les paul but nearly all of my guitar players friends have over the years and they just never clicked with me. the neck joint is uncomfortable in my left hand and while sitting, the body feels way* too heavy in comparison to the neck. the very first sg I picked up was an epiphone in a guitar store, and I immediately clicked with it. the weight, the thin body shape, and then there’s the tone. mid range growl and clarity that seems lacking in les pauls I’ve played, mind you none of them had PAFs, and none of them where vintage or from golden years of gibson. nowadays I have two sgs, an epiphone special p90 and a gibson sg tribute with ‘buckers and they are stunning guitars. I have a few non-gibson singlecuts, a V, and a strat as well but the sgs get the most play. I love ‘em. You should get one,the epiphones are great project guitars, and great value, I recommend the music city bridge that uncle larry helped design for the special, only problem mine came with was the bridge had some tilt, and the intonation could have been better, get that replacent bridge and the guitar will SING.

Heh, bizarrely I think I first saw more Yamaha SG 2000's than Gibson SG's when I first started seeing live bands in the late 70's, big with several punk and post punk bands. How did Yamaha ever get away with calling their double cutaway an SG?

Your playing sounded essentially inspired in this one - time for an SG?

I had one for a while, but fell out of love with it. In the end I traded it for a Tokai LP - much nicer guitar.

In my 40+ years of gigging I had never even played an SG. I wanted something with P90s, so last year I bought an Epiphone SG Special in faded Pelham Blue. Great guitar, but didn't like the noisy pups, so I put MojoTone Quiet P90s in it. Light, sounds good, classic look, not much neck dive. Tuners are meh. But it only cost $400 new, so a great value. The only weird thing for me is how the guitar sits/hangs. The neck is shifted to the left by about 2 frets compared to my other guitars so I have reach out farther with my fretting hand. No biggie after a short period of adjustment. Probably gigging it tonight in fact...

I remember watching the Welsh Band “ Man “ in my teens and thinking the SG was for me. A few years later l had the opportunity to try one. They say you should never meet your heroes……..

First SG must have been Angus Young and High Voltage. Then Tony Iommi of course. Own three SGs now, my favourite Gibson together with Flying V.

So im a huge ACDC fan but didnt want an SG as i didnt want to be another Angus clone. About 4 months ago I bought my first SG after going through at least 15 other guitars. Well what a revelation. Its Light. It has no neck dive. Full access up the neck. P90 version that sounds awesome. Looks great. Feels great to play. I think I might be home. some great SG players. Angus. Kim Thayill. Ian Mackaye.

Umm, the SG is NOT symmetrical. the top horn is pretty clearly one fret longer. am I wrong?

I used to own an SG. I got it because the other guitar in my band got a Les Paul before I could. I didn’t want to copy him. It was great. I liked it better than a Les Paul. Still do. But still Strats and Teles feel better.

I had a 1976 SG, which was a great sounding guitar and I liked the neck, but it was neck heavy and never felt comfortable live. It had the real Angus Young tone as well, so I was sad to part with it.But I got a Strat and some cash for it so it turned out ok. Maybe the 60's ones are different, but I can't keep guitars, that I won't use live, that's a dust collector!

You probably knew this already, but I didn't -- the horns on an SG aren't really symmetrical! When I heard about that I had to take a look at my (still-smells-like-cigarette smoke) 2004 SG Special, and sure enough.

I had an SG Junior in '79 and hated it. But I'd forgotten how much until I bought a standard as year ago to try and experiment with. Just couldn't get on with the fact that the neck is heavier than the body and that 'upper-mid push' from the pickups doesn't really sound right to my ears. So I only kept it about 3 months. Now, a YAMAHA SG2000… a MUCH better SG for me. 🙂

fun fact, Gibson SG don't have symmetrical horns. Look at them closely they're slightly off and when you see left hand models it'll stick out like a sore thumb.

I just know that many favorite les paul players I've looked into actually recorded the guitar parts for the album on an SG. There's probably something to that idk
