🇵🇭 Why have so many Filipino nurses in the US died from COVID-19? | The Stream

A stunning number of Filipino nurses in the United States have died of COVID-19.
According to a new study, amongst all nurses of colour, Filipinos have been hit the hardest. In fact, while Filipinos represent just four percent of the nursing workforce, they have so far accounted for 31.5 percent of nurses who died. The figures include those born in the Philippines and also US-born Filipino Americans.
So how did this one group become the frontline workers of all frontline workers? In this episode of The Stream we discuss the inequalities that researchers say contributed to this horrible phenomenon.

If these stats are true, then why don't we reduce their working hours? Lack of proper rest may be weakening their immune systems. Sounds like they need pay raises too!

Adding to it, also from what i seen.. Filipino nurses work hard and lot more hours because some also like the money to maintain certain nice life style amd some to support family back home. Plus Filipinos love enjoying life, some of them don't like staying home, always traveling, get togethers and stuff even during the pandemic.

They are still a loving couple traveling the world together until COVID hits. I miss both of them but specially my nurse mom.

Rich people plays the money game to win. Poor people plays the money to not lose. The goal of the truly rich people is to have massive wealth and the poor sees a surplus as an opportunity for consumption instead of investing it. change your mindset and do what the rich does, which is investing.

This is an amazing conversation. I've been a patient that has received care from many Filipino nurses here in New Zealand. I always talk with them and often think about their experiences here in NZ and what it means to work in the health system here. I admire the sacrifices that the Filipino nurses and families make to living here. And trying to provide a decent living for themselves and their families.

It is my own experince as a patient and also as a hospital working experience. We should have to consider them special category even though they are weak philosophically but, hard workers to face any challenges.

Our Hospitals here in the United States have become a business instead of being a place for patient care, it is unfortunate that the problem with understaffing is highly significant. Our Nurses work very long hours with patient to staff ratio so disproportionate they are exhausted. I know from my own experience that Filipino Nurses are extremely dedicated and compassionate. I don't see racism playing a part in this scenario. Being a caregiver is a calling, I am thankful we have well educated, loving Nurses of all cultures living and working here in the United States.

I worked with Phillipinos, very hard working, they go above and beyond, they are easily accessible and you find them everywhere including Saudi Arabia as house keepers but no one is talking about how they are cheap labour that's why employers love them. Any hard worker who is also cheap labour is loved by all. They will drive down costs and work for anything as long as they leave behind the poverty back home. Before you guyz come down on me, I love Philippinos and what am saying I got from the mouths of Philippinos in Dubai when I was wondering why am from Africa and am being paid more than them seeing as we do exactly the same thing. When a crisis occurs they definitely will be the sacrificial lambs. They have to know their value and up their negotiation skills.

Lots of Filipinos got the vaccine first as they work in the medical field, which is how it should be. There was a general lack of PPE early on, which was exacerbated by China having Chinese citizens in the US ship PPE back to China. Simply, many Filipinos were hit harder by Covid as their homes are multi generational and they are on the front line. God bless our medical professionals and thank you for all you have endured.

I don't agree with bringjng the issue of inequality or even racism for Filipino nurses, compared to nurses from elsewhere. Anyone starting their career in whatever field will naturally need time to adjust, especially if you are not a local American. And although it's said that Filipino nurses comprise only 4% of the nursing workforce in the US, it appears that the real number is much higher. And yes, probably because Filipino nurses end up being in critical areas of hospital work like the icu, the front line etc. Nevertheless, after several years of experience, their pay scale I believe should be equivalent if not higher than other regular nurses in less critical areas in hospitals. So I don't see a reason to be so concerned. In fact, being assigned to icu & other critical hospital wards shows that Filipino nurses are very capable, much more than those who are not Filipino (sorry, I mean just in general). It's really something to be proud of, even whrn considering that the risks may be higher. Overall, it shows the competency of Filipino nurses, something that speaks volumes about Filipinos in general.

Oh pls do not cover up all. We understand Y'all have work to go back and tend to speak safely. But be transparent. Local nurses there have few loads than Filos nurses. They were abusely assigned to dangerous task and ward which are not given equally to american local nurses. Racesim inequalized the state of professionalism. These is not humane act of service but exploitation to those who are in needs.

this premise is just bizarre , 4% but 31.5% of deaths , these numbers seem impossible , not plausible , lumping foreign Filipino nurses with USA born Filipino-American nurses , seems problematic , as almost everything about these two groups would be fundamentally different , except for genetics , thus implying this 4%/31.5% mystery is only attributed to Filipino genetics , and information is not provided if some Filipino -American nurses are mixed race , this must be bigus "new study" , or statistical compiling flawed

Philippino nurses are really great. Most of them have the perfect mentality which is needed to be a nurse (besides those who are already ruined in the Western toxic environment of media BS like this one). Filipino in general God-fearing and caring people. You can still find the touch of humanity in that society (maybe one of the main reasons being that way is, their way of upbringing in a Catholic belief and practice). But they are also extremely poor people. You can literally find tens of thousands of registered Filipino nurses in the Philippines without any job and spending their days in extreme poverty with their six to twelve siblings. In that situation, they will take even a janitorial job in any foreign country (you will find a lot of Filipino college graduates are doing house maid jobs in HK, UAE, and other middle eastern countries). So, wherever those nurses find an opportunity they will take it. And of course, when other countries will bring foreign-trained nurses to their country, they will always get the worst work environment in their new home, in terms of duty hours, location, benefits, and everything else. Still, they found themselves a thousand times better off than their counterparts back in the Philippines. It is a known fact, and they took the job and migrated to different countries knowing this condition. Nobody forced anyone to migrate to any country. It is all individual choice and trying to break the cycle of poverty. The last time I was in Manila, I saw, more than a thousand people are on the line before the US embassy in Manila. They all wanted to come to this country knowing the facts. They should not start talking about discrimination or things like that, once they are here. Even when media like Al Jazeera is eager and tries their best to move and turn the discussion in that single direction. I haven't seen any Al Jazeera program where they are showing how the same Filipinos are treated in Saudi Arabia, UAE - how the Catholics are practicing their religion in these totally Muslim countries. Hope to see some Al Jazeera programs in that area in the coming days.

Can I ask a question from Philippines. Marunong ka ba magsalita ng inyong language o tagalog? Okay kalimutan natin. Here in the Philippiines in the government hospitals are lack of manpower in the vacant positions because they chose to go abroad because of the reasons like the low salaries of the medical professionals like what happened last year the government suspend or banned temporarily because they are needed to take care of the ill patients in the hospitals and rural areas. So here's the basic question why the people of US have their own recruit of their medical professionals when they get no jobs from they graduate in colleges. I must say that white privileges and black discrimination or any color of the skin is still facing in this modern times. So you as a Filipino willing to go abroad and left your children or not having as a sacrifice to had a good salaries. Tawag sa tagalog magbalat ng buto, dugo at pawis para magsilbi sa ibang lahi.

Experiences w/ Filipina RNs: *1 ICU RN killed a patient, because she opened up the potassium pump to change a patient’s gown. *1 long-term facility RN caused a pt. to die because she had no clue that the patient was septic, refusing to call the MD to send the patient to the ER. *1 RN (although signed a work Visa contract w/ a hospital) kept calling off sick when she was secretly working lucrative private-duty cases. She had an anchor baby to get U.S. citizenship. On private-duty cases, she was billing the pt. for $100 lunches for herself every day. She was kissing the patient, even though he had a wife & trying to get him to fly her to party in Las Vegas. She was also double-billing the patient even when the shift was staffed by someone else. The patient’s wife fired her. *MANY work 2 jobs (24-hours straight) due to profound GREED to drive $50,000- $100,000 cars; buy expensive jewelry & live the high life which then endangers safe patient care, let alone extremely UNSAFE driving on the freeways. It’s their sleep deprivation that’s causing their immune systems to be dangerously lowered. They’re told non-stop by other RNs to STOP greedily taking on 24-hour shifts but they refuse because they want their unsafe GREED life-styles instead. *MANY own & operate board-and- care houses/SNFs, employing unqualified, unlicensed, live-in Filipino couples who are stuck there like slaves, working 24-hour shifts. The patients FALL & break their hips; then die from pneumonia because it’s so short- staffed there & their Filipino underpaid slave staff is extremely sleep-deprived. THIS causes their immunity to be dangerously lowered. *Many RN registries now refuse to employ Filipina RNs because they aggressively take over ALL of the shifts-NO days off on purpose. They refuse to SHARE any shifts with other RNs. It’s extremely dangerous and profoundly UNSAFE for the patient as well as for their own health. They’ve become extremely aggressive w/ their abject greed agendas, which they themselves are pro- actively lowering their own immune systems. *During the Northridge earthquake, the Filipina RNs refused to even show up for work. *She’s LYING about the RN staffing shortages in the U.S. Corporations purposely cut costs by notoriously not instating SAFE RN-to-patient staff RATIOS. That’s what keeps an RN. Instead, they pay foreign contracts as a cost-cutting measure. SNFs have 1 RN to 30 patients, which should be illegal. Instead of race-baiting Filipina RNs, they should help the Vietnamese who are a billion times less compensated than Filipina RNs-the latter are making $100K/year. Give me a break! ALL foreigners came to the US with the exact same obstacles re/ foreign languages & foreign cultures. White RNs work just as hard, so you can stop your reverse-racism. They’re just more adamant about insisting to PROTECT patients, the public and themselves re/ refusing to endanger them by working UNSAFE, 24-hr. GREED shifts which drastically lowers immunity and health.

For the stats you need to compare the nurses in the same sector and environment, not all nurses. And nurses in the Philippines are dying too. As the nurses in Italy, France and India. If it's so awful then don't go to the USA or Canada or UAE. This story is manufactured racism. It's a manipulated narrative. AND on a broader health issue, the Philippino diet is not healthy. What about all the other nurses? The health sector is so supportive to employees and nurses are well respected.
