The “you know what we’ve been through” goes even deeper. For TV writing, you have to write as episodic as possible, or else you just lose viewers. Many viewers miss episodes, or just tune in during the big climatic moments, plus the long gap between seasons and duration of seasons people forget details, and when episodes are too connected viewers tap out. If you watch tv with this in mind it is very eye opening to see how creatively they play around this while still telling an overarching story

@mcdabb7226 not even flashbacks, but just more dialogue and context. Even just to see more of the regular Saviors and workers, people who have been living at the Sanctuary but aren't monsters and assholes like the rest of them, and the families of people who died at the satellite outpost. To get more backstory to the Saviors, why they follow Negan, why he believes he's saving people, seeing the Saviors take out an outside threat that was going to attack Alexandria, explain more of why they did what they did. Because they tried to add layers to Negan and explained some of his backstory with losing Lucille and making weak people strong and that the leader before was even worse, but all the time he just seemed like a tyrant and the Saviors just terrorised other communities because they could. But then Daryl explained in 9x1 that they couldn't grow food at the Sanctuary and that's why they forced the other communities to produce for them, which explained so much of their motivations! There was also an incredible scene in the season 8 finale that was cut of Negan that wouldve added a lot of context and emotion to the Savior side in the war

I disagree with your analysis on negan just becoming a badass with no explanation being bad. In his first speech hells the story about what he did to the guy who didn’t let his wife hear her song and how he almost killed him. I think Lucille was the dam that held the rage negan had in him. And just like any man whod lose their wife, all they’d see is Red and would do anything to give payback to those they deem deserve the blame for it. Idk maybe I’m wrong but it made sense to me

I actually thought the reapers were a pretty interesting threat Think about it. Everyone else we’ve seen at this point has just been regular people. The reapers were trained. Sure maybe some of them were civilians but the implication is that most of them are highly skilled. And they employ a hit and run strategy so they have that going for them too. Every battle we saw up to that point (aside from the whisperer war) you could just solve the problem by shooting some people. But the reapers overwhelmed them, forced them to split up, hunted them. It was a real bitch to kill just one They had to rely on dumb luck, sneak attacks and a page from the whisperer handbook just to stand a goddamn chance (a detail which I also appreciated)

I think the only counter argument is: are we only watching to see these characters die? Is the only way to add emotional and narrative weight to these stories for an important character to die? Is that what these stories are always leading to? Is that the only climax and conclusion that can be satisfying? Because obviously yes, the Whisperer war wouldve been more impactful and significant if it resulted in a big character death, but is that the only way to make it impactful, or is it more about the struggle the characters go through, their character development from the beginning to the end of the arc, the loss they experience in other ways, and the iconic pivotal moments of shock, horror and awe?

As much as I love The Walking Dead I have to admit that season 9 and 10 just feel like they’re missing something, i’m not entirely sure if it’s the lack of real stakes like you’ve mentioned, I’m not really opposed to the characters not dying at this point in the show considering how experienced they all are. Although Magna and Connie surviving was too much and didn’t really make sense, as glad as I am that Connie didn’t die, it just felt really cheap. I’m not sure what you think of season 11 but in all honesty season 11 was my favorite season of the entire show since season 4 and 5. The ending battle with blowing up all the walkers in a cgi explosion was pretty stupid and underwhelming and just didn’t feel all that climatic, but I thought everything else was pretty good. The way the whispers were handled in the show just didn’t feel quite right to me, I think it’s just the fact that whenever they were on screen it was immediately obvious which ones were whisperers in the show never really played around much with the whole “any one of these walkers could be a person“ concept. I just don’t think it translated very well to the TV screen, aside from playing with that more I’m not really sure what they could’ve done to make them feel scarier or more intimidating. Although the character drama was still always really good right up until the ending in my opinion, and it’s what kept me watching, there’s still tons of dialogue and scenes in the last 3 seasons that get to me emotionally. Even the ending monologue at the very ending of the show between Rick and Michonne just strikes me as incredibly powerful. I’ve really enjoyed your retrospective on this series, and it’s cool learning how it contrasts to the source material.

Negan was violent and capable before the world fell. He beat the hell out of a guy for pretty much no reason. He's always been violent, but his wife and society kept him mostly in check. Without society he had his wife, and when his wife died that violent and sadistic side had nothing keeping it back and everything bringing it to the surface. The world he was in and what happened to his wife amplified that part of him. It's no surprise to me at all that he started going around beating people to death.
@Logan912
@Logan912 6 ай бұрын
Sure, but there’s a huge difference between losing his shit and beating up some asshole in a bar versus becoming full-blown villain Negan over night like he’s Charlie transforming into Hank from Me, Myself, and Irene especially given how wimpy we see him throughout the apocalypse up to that point. It would be like Rick going from Season 1 “officer friendly Rick” straight into Season 5 “murder jacket Rick” over night because Lori died without the four seasons of build up to make him that way. Obviously, they can’t fit four seasons of build up into one episode for Negan, but maybe they could’ve done something of a montage like the Here’s Negan comic just to show that there was a transition as opposed to Negan flipping a switch and suddenly becoming the violent Negan that we know.

id like to think.. (my theory) that the reason the reaper arc happened. in the show.. was because they will appear as a 'earlier' moment from ricks time at crm.. on ricks show - maybe we see them or the event. of being 'left for dead' in that massive 'fire' pope spoke of, maybe by beale's command.. (that huge event that, caused them to move and keep moving) we know pope & co ended up doing a few jobs clearing/killing settlements for lance at commonwealth - b4 lea ends up leaving darryl to go back to them.. and we all see their demise with negan and maggie.. yeah.. id like to see a small appearance of pope being f'd over by beale.. in a mix bag from rick telling michonne.. ''along the way while i was inside crm'' - insert quick time-filler flashback pope story - can be done in less than 3-5 minute screentime.. like.. " well michonne - that's when i knew beale was a light of the world maniac - and why i cant leave now - till we can return the military rule back to the people" senario.... or something like that.. just a small touch.. that shows us where the reapers came from!! cos at the end of the day - all we know is they got darryl, negan and maggie'd to death.. lol and it would be a tidy tie in.. and make up for throwing that random group, and a darryl girlfriend in the mix outa no where...

I definitely agree on Here's Negan. I was looking for more of a Saviors origin story than a Negan origin story. While casting JDM's wife meant they absolutely nailed the chemistry between Negan and Lucille and how he transformed from an angry but weak gym teacher playing Gears of War in his basement and cheating on her while she gets diagnosed with cancer, the rest of his backstory is problematic because of the timeline and how Negan just flipped from struggling to kill a walker to John Wick, and I don't like that his surname is Smith 😂. Also his line to generic biker gang leader that he is capable of damn near anything, again, how did losing his wife turn him into a post apocalyptic King in one day? And did he take too long finding her medicine and she died/committed suicide to spare him from the burden or herself from suffering, or did he take too long on purpose because he couldn't face her and she killed herself to stop the pain?

You know, you bring up the whole "no reprecussions/consequences" for all the stupid crap in the show that should have averse effects and I came to a realization that was pushed into the back of my mind with the show: It feels like this overly comfortable feel for the TV show was because of Talking Dead. Allow me to explain in this comment essay below: So one of the things the talk show Talking Dead, the show that comes on after every new The Walking Dead episode, did was often try to remove all the moral dilemma from everything. Biggest examples I could think of is with Fat Joey in Season 7 and Rick killing the Saviors at the bar in Season 8. In those cases Chris would often dumb those things down and word what happened in a way that for the average joe schmoe that has a hard time with heroes having faults, made the blame almost entirely nonexistent on Rick or Daryl for the horrid things they did. So come Daryl becoming the main star of the show now that Rick is gone? Well Daryl is a fan favorite right? If he dies we riot? Well with that we now get badass action hero shit with Carol and Daryl, alongside Sniper Daddy Gabriel and Rick 2- I mean Aaron. All the while those pesky moral dilemmas and all that that made the show and comic compelling? Too complex for Joe and Betsy watching on the idiot box! So now? Cartoonishly evil Beta! The Commonwealth? Well they are enemies to our group from frame 1 so might as well get to killing them and ignoring how they are handling the actual honest to god long time still in training militia. Now you could say that I am making a stretch with connecting this to Talking Dead but... Not really in my experience. So many people often around work and shit when I worked at a comic store used to parrot what Chris Hardwick and others said on that show. Which in turn, made the vocal idiot box watchers speak over the more nuanced viewers and here we are. Also sidenote, you know how Kirkman said the comic would be 300 issues but ended on Issue 193? What if he trolls us by having a 107 issue series of the gap between 192 and 193 featuring exclusively Carl? We know Carl wouldn't die but still seeing his growing journey would be fucking cool.

The bonus episodes were a complete waste of time. I can't believe we had to wait half a year for the finale only to wait almost as long for filler episodes that added nothing and just existed to fill time. Yes I know there was a pandemic going on, but other shows managed to do more and show me on screen. Yes there was Maggie's introduction, the introduction of Leah (🤮), Gabriel and Aaron's episode was good but inconsequential, and Here's Negan was a god sent, but even that is problematic because of how it screws up the timeline and inconsistencies. They also finally changed to digital after 10 years of film, but the quality of the writing didnt match the quality of the cinematography. And even in 11A things were very lacking and slow, and it took 5 episodes to finally get to the Commonwealth, after waiting over a year from the original season 10 finale cliffhanger. So much of 10C could be cut and it would make no difference, Leah and the Reapers sucked and Princess' PTSD imaginary hallucinations never come up again, and nobody, NOBODY asked for 40 minutes of Carol making soup and chasing a rat and Daryl fixing his bike! Did that actually happen?? Everything in 10C and 11A couldve and shouldve been told in 8 episodes, and include 11x9 in that too because the 11x8 cliffhanger was fucking diabolical. I would rather have waited a year but the restrictions to end or whatever excuse the had for such shoody writing and pacing of the final season to get a concise and consistent 8 episodes. Idk if the Commonwealth needed to be just 16 episodes or 24 or 2 seasons, but the way it was handled was really poorly executed. Add to that waiting forever and a day for ANY update on the Rick "movies" and knowing about the spinoffs, this was a very rough time for TWD fans

The reapers arc was terrible, but I disagree with the whisperer arc having nothing resembling the loss Rick had but forget carols arc. I will admit it’s not done as well but it exist.

It sucked cause she keeped flip flopping to the point it felt the writers didn't know what to do, add no major consequences coming from it makes it bland and boring.

Carols arc was good,until they forgot consequences exist and decided to write her as an emotional idiot who gets what she wants and everyone forgives her,they even had the nerve to nerf Negans intelligence

@@lexzeyfercronus the sad part is Kang reworked the whole Whisper Arc just for Carol, a character that wasn't even alive in the source material at this point.

How dare you... How dare you not cover my favorite episode of the show: The Carol soul episode. Season 10 episode 21"Diverged" is quite possibly the greatest piece of media ever to be produced, dare I say god himself was involved in the production of this masterful, tear-jerking, extravagant episode.... no, to call it an episode would be inaccurate, it is an experience. Carol's struggle against the rat is metaphorical for the abundance of willpower, strength and determination humans must summon to challenge and conquer life's adversities; when Carol finally achieved her goal my entire family burst into tears of unbridled joy, we shared in Carol's triumph, it was palpable. As Alexander pope once said "To err is human, to forgive divine", Well, "korotos Mystery Shack", you have not made a mere, menial error, you have committed a mortal sin of the highest degree and I'm going to dedicate my life to honoring this masterclass in media, and with my dying breath i will praise this episode. Diverged, my beloved, I will never forget you.

Can't wait until you get to last season so I can finally have closure without having to actually watch the rest of the show. I was patient and stuck through it for all its low points, but the dragging in last season just couldn't keep my interest. Then I found out about the spin-offs and the fact that the there's no true ending, and I just didn't bother.

i think the ending talking about negans sudden shift when killing the bikers ignores the story he tells the guy at the end, hes literally recounting the time he almost beat a man to death in public then took his money and went back to dancing with his wife, that violent, sadistic side to negan was always there but it was repressed because modern society does not and should not allow people to demonstrate those traits. Like negan said "back then seeing red was a bad thing, i was a bad man... but now when i see red it is only a matter of what I am capable of". I really love negans character but I honestly agree that negan being presented as a good guy who did bad things was kind of dissapointing and it felt like s10 itself was flipflopping on whether negan is a good guy or not. He kidnapped Lydia, but then he still acts like a dad to her, he helped to trap the people in and burn down the hilltop but then everyone acts like he never did it. I would also like to say those bikers had like three guys and before lucilles death he had something to keep him anchored in the world but after she died he had no reason to supress that side of himself and no one to look after.
