Why Hip-Hop Doesn't Respect Tyler, the Creator

From the moment Tyler, The Creator bursted onto the scene in 2010, he's always been seen as the odd one out. The industry branded him as nothing more than a source of controversy-a kind of rebel without a cause. However, hes always seen a bigger picture for himself, aiming to rise above the fray. While some artists nowadays catch a break early, landing top chart positions with their debut tracks, Tyler had to play the long game, waiting an ENTIRE DECADE for his breakthrough moment. Facing rejections from some of the industry's giants only fueled his ambition. Now, the narrative has changed dramatically... Through relentless effort and an unwavering commitment to his craft, Tyler has flipped the script, transforming from an undervalued outsider to a respected visionary in the music world.

Alright, anybody who lived or grew up in LA from 2011-2013 knows how Tyler & OF changed the landscape. From the style to the music there was a point in time everybody wanted to be like Tyler. It wasn’t only valley type suburb kids who latched onto his vibe it was a lot of us from South Central, ELA, Compton etc. who gravitated towards him. His music was different from artists like TY$, YG, Joe Moses, RJ, E-40 who were dominating the LA airwaves with function/club bangers which was the popular genre here at the time. Now I will say that his music wasn’t for everybody but Yonkers was definitely a song that damn near everybody was bumping back then.

I’m not gonna lie, back in 2011 when he won his first MTV award, I was not impressed with Yonkers. I was a little disappointed because I didn’t understand how this person won this award for a song like that. But then there was one day in 2012, that I decided to start checking out some of his music because I was bored, that’s when I knew how much potential he had. I realized I had so much more in common with him than I thought. I too, was the weirdo, the odd one out of the bunch. So his and Odd Future music meant so much to me. It spoke to me and being myself, and not giving a damn about what anyone had to say. For over a decade now, I have been supporting him and everything he does. To see his growth is so bittersweet to me, because now everybody who shamed me for listening to him, listening to him. I’m so proud of him, but it makes me upset a little bit of people who like to jump on the bandwagon. I know he deserves all the success because he works so hard for it.

The industry knows Tyler has that Kanye spark and that spark can’t get brighter because that type of music where your production isn’t generic and your lyrics aren’t generic its hard to compete with that. Drake snuck in with that sound and that’s how he gained everybody’s love, he’s changed up but he knows his beginning will make his ending more smooth. Those rappers who try to remain real and creative will always get push back because that music is timeless.

@@SolaceWhore Before this I thought of myself as a spec of dust floating amongst the great cosmos, insignificant even, but you have opened my eyes. People ARE allowed to have their own opinion, but thanks to your prolific words, I now realize and claim myself The Monolith of artistic claims in the music industry. I shall hear everyone’s thoughts and opinions, consider them, and make it one valid statement. Tyler remains one of the greatest talents of our generation (2009 - until he retires)

As someone that has been listening since the Bastard days, I feel genuinely proud of our boy Tyler. His growth as a person and artist helped me grow as well. My taste in music wasn’t entirely influenced by him but his shift opened my eyes to new sounds. He has been my favorite solo artist for a long time and that doesn’t look like it’ll change anytime soon.

As a producer/composer that has been essentially making music for myself for over 15 years, I feel this. Sometimes it feels like I'm screaming into a void. I wish I was better at advertising myself. I guess I'll just go back to this void. Creating music has been the only reason I've stayed sane though, so I guess I should be grateful... It's just dark out here sometimes.

Tyler the Creator is like a New School Version of Del the Funky Homosapien, I can see a lot of similarities from having influences inside and outside of HipHop, having their own crews like Odd Future and Hieroglyphics, and just being comfortable with themselves and their own skin.

Longtime fans of Tyler like myself literally grew with him. No matter what the adults and critics said, Tyler was the voice of teens when I was in high school. So many of us saw ourselves in Odd Future. We were all angry and dissatisfied and Tyler's music spoke to that part of us. But as we grew and matured, so did Tyler and his music. There's something about Tyler's music that feels like home for me now, and a lot of fellow fans feel the same way judging by how we all know all the words to his songs and can sing along when he performs. He deserves everything he has and more for his artistry.

the greatest thing is the tyler got the respect. he didn’t get any from the stuck-up-their-own-ass executives, but he got respect from the people that matter, the common person, his community. he manages to stay grounded and not fall into encouraging parasitic relationships with his fans. he’s forever changed the industry and even though the music executives may never acknowledge it, the charts do, and so do the people.

"To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment." - Ralph Waldo Emerson. Don't let anyone lie to you - being yourself is work. *Do the work*. If you stand out in a disruptive way or have a unique style? Then? You have more work to do than others. Find your tribe of folks and mentors who get you(to keep your sanity), fortify your resilience, build your confidence, and keep moving towards your goals. This is one of the reasons I dislike the spiel people give kids: "Be yourself, and people will like you." Giving them these expectations is dishonest...especially if they take it literally when they leave your bubble. Good Luck to everyone. I hope you have a good life experience and get to do the things you want to do with your life.
