And people are so obsessed with the fear of causing offense, being the first one to identify a possible cause of offense and of course, feeling offended. I think it's part of the psychological mechanism that's gone haywire at the moment: stopping the sensation of OFFENSE, wanting it not to exist. Ah! Unless you're a SJW zealot who is 'fighting the woke war'. Or someone just as dopey, self-centred and despicable who is oblivious to the ugly, demented hypocrisy of weaponising words and every other hacking tool at your disposal in order to fire at people who have been identified as your enemies courtesy of a dogmatic ideology which you think is, again, morally superior. In that case causing offense is okay because 'you're on the right side of history' and it's 'for the common good'. You can never eradicate the sensation of 'offense' from the human condition. There are 7 billion of us sharing real estate on this space rock, so isn't it for the best that we just all encourage emotional resilience and perspective in our youngsters rather than indulging them and empowering all these woke bullies to stomp out the people whose opinions they are 'offended' by? Who cares about being offended?! How have our strident, passionate young people become so emotionally brittle that they lash out and report someone for 'hate speech', demand someone lose their livelihood, get a criminal record or become socially ostracised due to having an OFFENSIVE opinion?! We've all been far too kind and indulgent with these manipulative, selfish, impulsive, cry-baby bullies who cannot communicate properly. Unless we're reaching out to deliberately interfere unsolicited in our neighbour's daily lives then live and let live I say. How can we learn and understand each other if we're all too afraid to give each other our unvarnished life experience stories and exchange honest observations & questions? Can't 7 billion people be allowed to hold different values and have their own ideas and just be left alone: not everybody has to like everybody, my god. The internet has, interestingly enough, made things far more suffocating and claustrophobic with all this policing the opinions of strangers. I like the quote you posted too, it resonated with me also.

In one of his shows about a year ago Klavan referred to his background, comparing his situation back then to the current cancel culture. He apparently called the phone company, thinking there was something wrong with the connection. Nobody called him anymore. Just like the deep state bureaucracy agencies, media, bigcorp, bigtech, schools, judges, politicians are colluding now, the movie scene had sent the memo he had to be canceled. Amazing how thorough the fascist dem system already worked back then. Imagine how many people went mad when The Outsider came to put ordinary Americans first in 2016. They couldn't believe Hillary, who had already made interior designs for her DC rooms, had to call her removal team to turn around.

I am often reminded of a young man's image upon his graduation from West Point. I watched him grow up as I worked with his father, a local Prosecutor. He came home for Christmas and I ate lunch with him and his father at the courthouse Christmas party. I didn't know him well, but he was an impressive young man. Six months later I was at his funeral. As is so often the case, the family fell apart, the father gave up his career to teach history. We were lucky as our son was in the 82nd Airborne with only slight injuries, but far too many young lives were lost or changed forever. I recommend this to anyone with or without a direct connection.

Hollywood, well, the arts in general wield so much power over our impressionable youngsters and soft-headed people in general that there is a real responsibility for all people toiling in movies, music, literature etc, I totally agree. I was fascinated to hear Mr Klavan's story. I felt like I was sitting on a plane and finally got seated next to someone interesting to talk to. The thing to address in open conversation and through personal testimonial is how life imitates art and art imitates life and life imitates art and art imitates life...it just goes round and round. It's almost a living thing, the arts and the way it all influences people. It promises to be the eternal conversation but I hope we begin. I have a gentle, academic pacifist friend who works as a professional writer and as a professor in college and for most of her life has avoided the shrill debates and ugly skirmishes on the 'culture war' battlefield thinking none of this stuff truly impacted upon her life and career. Think again. I'm so cross with her wilful ignorance and don't know how to make her truly see what's going on in the world and how her entire field is at risk of a scorched earth policy in some corners if these gentle, aloof bookworms don't start paying attention and speaking up. To be honest, it's like she still thinks the landscape is the same fundamentally as it was in the 1990's. Only, everything has changed. Even the words we used back then have entirely different meanings and connotations. Does she know this?! Does anybody else have smart, well educated friends who just refuse to get involved because it's all too exhausting and brutally unpleasant for them? Combative thought and expression IS exhausting but surely there's still a way in which the average person can speak freely without unnecessary moral or intellectual compromise or the risk of being smeared, cancelled or the worst outcome which we all fear and which keeps up gagged in 'real life': legal trouble. It's all utterly despicable. The amount of misunderstanding, the rapidity with which people are condemned before even being understood accurately...what has happened to us all here in the West? Big Tech have an enormous amount to answer for. We couldn't have imagined this back in the 1990's when we were all so innocently enthusiastic about the internet. Big Tech and the arts...something's gone horribly, horribly wrong.

We have our flaws. Half our Republican politicians are cowards, the other half is given no choice but to make a crook the head of the GOP, some of us are racist(thanks to southern confederates claiming the right), many of us are out of touch with culture, and we have just about nearly every other human and political flaw you can think of that the left also bears... BUT, the left is getting farther and farther left; more and more radical. The right at this point is the only consistent side of the political spectrum that isnt trying to "evolve" its beliefs because we understand that politics and human morality has no evolution. We understand that if you have a brown cake and a pink cake, the pink cake is the good cake and just because you put pink icing and new decorations on the brown cake doesnt mean its not still a bad brown cake. It's the same cake with a different look. The left calls that "progress" which is why they call themselves progressives.

I knew Andrew Klavan had written some novels, but I had no idea that he had written the screenplays for all those Hollywood movies.

Courage is contagious!! I absolutely love his message. It’s up to all of us to stand up for what is right and not to give ground to political hacks

happened to me, as a police officer in a small town...I moved there, wasn't part of the history of the town, wasn't born there or whatever - and got canned because I spoke up about the people running the town stealing taxes from the residents. Never got hired by another department because I was "blackballed"...yes, it sucks, being honest cost me my career

Sending much love and respect to you, Mr. Klavan. I can't remember how I first came across The Last Thing I Remember, but I used to check out popular YA books occasionally, and somehow I found that one. I later told a boy from my church that I had loved the whole Homelander series and thought he would also, so he read them, and we started emailing back and forth about them. I still feel a bond with this young man all these years later. His parents definitely raised him right - they grilled me about the content of these books before they allowed him to read them. I still feel a strong bond with this young man all these years later, and he grew up to be a very fine man.
