Homer lacks the self awareness to realize his deity level powers because of the crayon shoved up his nose
@dudleybone89937 жыл бұрын
Wait a second, in that episode they remove the crayon and Homer accidentally proves there is no god. So how can Homer be god when he proves it impossible? And how can he go on to meet god several times after mathematically disproving it? If anything The Simpsons is a universe that takes place inside Homers daydream, that way he can be mortal and fallible but still prove all the points in this video.

Homer could be actually dead, and he is just living his afterlife (heaven or hell depending on how you look at it) This would explain how he can't die, but others can. How he lived a long time ago, and now. It also explains how the world lives around him, but he has no actual control over the world. Obviously, he doesn't know about his past life. This also can explain any changes in the timeline (like heaven or hell or correcting itself to make him happy or hurt more).
@zzyzzzyz64457 жыл бұрын
Craig Bennett II interesting theory.. but could this be said for any cartoon character? Or maybe any character in regards to there being no actual timeline in the series
@TheAIKnowledgeHub7 жыл бұрын
Kinda. It could even be said about your life (you don't know if you can die without dying, and you have no idea if the world just appears like it doesn't live around you but it actually does). BTW, obviously I don't believe this, I was just making a point. But I think it would fit a bit more with the Simpsons over many others. But note similar arguments could be made for shows like Family Guy, American Dad, King of the Hill, and so on. It could even be made for some shows on outside of animation like The King of Queens. But I think the Simpsons and American dad would be the best for this theory. Both does end up meeting their gods. Both massively screwed up their timeline a few times. Both have a center person around the show. Even American Dad went as far as showing this theory might actually be true with a Christmas special a few years back.
@jonathanbrooks49697 жыл бұрын
There is also the possibility that Homer is quantumly unstable, and constantly slips from one reality to a parralel one, so that he lives in various times, has constant adventures without staying injured or dying, and he seems to have wayyyy more actions that could fit in his familys lifespan. He is like sliders without the remote.
@TheAIKnowledgeHub7 жыл бұрын
Jonathan Brooks The problem with that theory is the universe seems to be forcing homer to go on these adventures. It doesn't seem homer actually seeks out these adventures. The only way that theory could work is if someone like the baby is really in control.

@viljamtheninja7 жыл бұрын
He also actually talks to God. It's interesting that that isn't even brought up.
@JamesCPotter137 жыл бұрын
viljamtheninja I think it's more implied that as Homer does believe in God, and does not believe HIMSELF to be God, that he manifested an image of what God should look like. There was also that time that, during the Apocalypse, Lisa was about to be saved and was rising to Heaven, and Homer flat out pulled her back to Earth.
@negascoot237 жыл бұрын
viljamtheninja It doesn't disprove the theory. If there is a God, he/she/it is not limited by Aristotelian laws... the law of identity, I mean: "A is A". The law that says you can't be more than one thing at the same time in the same way. This is how the Christian concept of God, the Trinity, works. God is one and three simultaneously. Three entities, one God. It is a logical impossibility, but that's only a problem for OUR reality. God could be 3 in 1 or 3000 in 1 (which is kinda what the Hindus have going).

@negascoot237 жыл бұрын
Wertsir And who could possibly be intelligent enough to disprove the existence of God EXCEPT God? You have to accept the existence of a Godlike intelligence if you accept that someone mathematically disproved God... And the paradox this creates further lends credence to the idea that Homer is God: Paradoxes are only a problem for limited human intelligences. God not only CAN reconcile paradoxes, it is an essential aspect of Godhood in the absolute, monotheistic sense.
@GarrettMoffitt7 жыл бұрын
Of Flanders God.
@GeriatricFan19637 жыл бұрын
The argument goes something like this: "I refuse to prove that I exist" says God, "for proof denies faith, and without faith I am nothing." "But," says Wertsir, "the Crayon episode of the Simpsons is a dead giveaway isn't it? It proves that you exist, and so therefore you don't. QED." ""Oh dear," says God, "I hadn't thought of that", and promptly vanishes in a puff of logic. "Oh, that was easy," says Wertsir, and for an encore he goes on to prove that black is white, and gets killed on the next zebra crossing.
@Wertsir7 жыл бұрын
I am willing to entertain the notion that Homer Simpson _may have been_ god, but after he denied his own existence mathematically in a way he finds satisfying in the Crayon episode he is for sure not a god anymore. Think of it this way: in the Crayon episode Homer Simpson uses his godlike powers to increase his own intelligence for the first time in a long time, having done so he decides to tackle the great problems of life, like 'why do we exist' 'what is the meaning of life' and most importantly 'does god exist'. Using his enhanced intelligence/omniscience homer realizes his godlike abilities, he knows that he is the smartest and most powerful being in the universe, but he also realizes that despite his great intelligence and power, he is not _happy_, that all he really wanted was to live as a dumb, mortal man with marge. The episode is all about knowledge/power, and how greater abilities do not translate into greater happiness. in the end home decides to put the crayon in his brain again, this symbolizes the denial of his godlike powers and his _choice_ to live as a powerless mortal man (plus or minus a few things to make his life easier). The proof he gave Flanders did not disprove gods existence, it proved that god did exist, and that the logical thing to do when given omnipotence is to destroy it, thus if god did exist then he would be dead. homer then acted on that chain of logic, bringing us to the end of the episode. He showed it to Flanders for two reasons: 1) because he did not want to be alone. that episode was about how superiority creates isolation, and how knowing things others don't only drives a divide between you and those you love. Homer did not want his family to carry the burden of knowledge, but he needed someone to do so in case his powers re-manifested themselves and he decided not to increase his intelligence again (this way Ned could demonstrate the logic needed for homer to make the right choice). why Ned? well that brings us to 2) SCREW YOU FLANDERS!

zerosysko Not exactly, I mean 'confession' in the sense that it is something you are actively a member of or not. That hasn't necessarily got anything to do with organization, Wicca is a confession but not an organized religion for example ( as far as I know at least). Shinto, on the other hand, you just practice as traditions and folklore. There's no actual 'awareness' of actually practicing a specific 'religion' involved there.

How everything bible related happened "2000 years ago"? 'cause Moses was already ancient history by the time of Jesus
@Fujikorific7 жыл бұрын
Yeah that's some poor biblical scholarship right there.
@JITCompilation7 жыл бұрын
So you're saying that in 2000 years, literally nothing changed.
@Fujikorific7 жыл бұрын
No, I'm saying that saying the events of the book of Exodus happened 2000 years ago is literally crappy biblical scholarship, it was probably written during the Babylonian exile and is about events taking place in the 6th century BC...
@LadyMcGiusti7 жыл бұрын
Jesus and the New Testament are 2000 years old. The Old Testament goes back thousands and thousands of years, to the dawn of monotheistic religions, i.e. Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. The Old Testament is where the stories of Adam and Eve, Abraham, Moses, Noah, Kind David, etc etc etc are. The New Testament is Jesus and the Apostles. That's what the BC and AD is all about when discussing Western history: BC is before the New Testament, and AD is after Jesus died and Christianity was adopted by Rome (and then forced onto the rest of the world).

In the clip, it showed the scene happening in 1220 BC, not 2000 years ago.

TheOtakuX Jacques isnt referred to by name, so it may be an ancestor. Homer is referred to as "Homer", and considering Homer is a name of greek origin - not hebrew, so it must be the same Homer; not an ancestor of Homer.

There seem to be three types of After Hours: The ones where they ignore suspension of disbelief and tropes to make a "Theorist"-level point (like here), the ones where they assume a fictional world is real and talk about consequences (like the one stranded on the road or the one about commercials), and finally the ones where they look at fiction as fiction, and discuss unintended implications / reasons for tropes (like the one about dead moms or the one about Forest Gump). Type 1 I could live without, Type 3 is my favorite.

I can give Homer demigod status. A god must be all-knowing, all powerful and all good. Homer barely makes the threshold for all powerful. Good and knowing are still out of reach.

andersoncherub True, but a Christian monothestic god is and Homer lives in that religion and culture. If you are willing to say the Christian god is fallible, belligerant and/or impotent then you charge has weight. But in the Simpson, God is a five fingered, face never revealed entity who often does act in the world. I call him a demigod because like Hercules or Theusus, he has power but very liyttle brains on how to use it.
@kernel_cataclysm73067 жыл бұрын
The "all powerful, all benevolent, all-knowing" god condition has been disproved over and over again. "Why is there suffering in the world?", and all that. In a polytheistic way he might well be a god in the Dionysos kinda way. He is hedonistically all powerful, immortal, and sufficiently all-knowing to support his own hedonism. Actually not knowing 'everything' works in favour of his own hedonism. He doesn't actively know about what would make him upset but always learns it throughout an episode and resolves it by the end.

2:14 - Michael says "Homer is the only character that we recognize" just as the ancient version of Jacques (the bowler Marge has an affair with) shows up, with a beard. He's not voiced by Albert Brooks in the 2nd Commandment episode, but he does represent the sin of adultery, and the face is basically the same.

Think about this, if he was a god and taking on generation after generation of families, wouldn't it be out of the ordinary to look the same as you did and your mate looking extremely older during 40 years? I'd say his healing factor doesn't kick in until he thinks he's gonna die, then reverses his aging process for the next wife.

Homer may be A god, but he is not THE God. Homer was in heaven for a brief period of time, and spoke to God himself, and he can't pray to himself to get tickets, both of which they showed in clips. This demonstrates that he is subject to a higher power, so Homer MAY be a minor god. Or he might be a member of the Q Continuum from Star Trek... You never know...

Jesse Guidry Another view point to look at it from is that according to any monotheistic religion their god is God so Swaim is kinda right. Just not unilaterally.
@samuelmuller1217 жыл бұрын
Jesse Guidry he could still be God even while praying to a higher power, himself, if he is unaware of his godhood then it makes sense that he would pray to himself. also when he has visions it is always depictions of mainstream image of God and heaven thus a projection of his own image of what God and heaven are. it's like people taking hallucigeons seeing Jesus or buddha. it's not because they are seeing Jesus or buddha but because subconsciously that is their idealisation of spiritualism.
@jessicalee3337 жыл бұрын
Jesus talks about (and to) God as a separate entity, yet also says "I and my father are one" and Christian tradition has it that they are separate and one being. Saint Patrick described the Catholic concept of the Holy Trinity using the three leaves of a shamrock, three which are one. So... Homer could be THE God, in a different manifestation. Since Jesus and God have both been depicted by The Simpsons, Homer could be the Holy Spirit - if you stuck with the Christian version. Of course, there are also plenty of other gods - Christianity doesn't really deny this. It could be defined as Monolatrist rather than Monotheist (the insistence on worshipping one god, without denying that others exist) - as in the 10 commandments "worship no other gods before me" or using the plural word "gods" in Genesis, or in the New Testament "though there are those that are called gods whether in heaven or on earth, but to us there is one god" or "there are many gods and many lords" with lesser or no authority, and one god with supreme authority - to them.
