Whatever reason you choose to learn gàidhlig is absolutely great ! As a Scot I thank you for giving this lovely language a platform to draw in new learners. I’m currently learning for the primary reason that it’s a language on the decline and with language there is a culture attached to it. I feel as though we need to preserve our culture and ensure it’s survival ! Tapadh leibh !!

Thank you for your response, I truly appreciate it! And I agree, languages such as this one should be preserved. Now that I am also learning (old) Irish, I am facinated by the rich Celtic history. I wish I would've learned more about it in school though, such a shame. Can I ask what study resources you are using for learning Scottish Gaelic? :)

Yes the Duolingo subscription is worth it as it helps fund language learning projects at schools and community centres in developing countries and underprivileged groups and people. The Scottish Gaelic seems to be based primarily on the Nova Scotia variety with input from the Western Isles. It continues to improve, but is only a supplementary or adjunct tool to something like Coffee Break Scottish Gaelic. The closest, most accurate pronunciation of Gàidhlig is gah-e-lick. (My phonetics.)

Oh I totally understand what you’re saying, you have no idea! I get so many comments that I would progress sooooo much quicker if I just were to choose one language at the time. It’s somehow just not how my brain functions. The beginning is often the most exciting part and I love to do that over and over again with each and every language that I learn. Curious to hear what you are learning!! ☺️ thank you for following me along, I appreciate it!

@@BecomingaPolyglot well I'm learning American Sign Language, this is the only language I've fully "committed" to learning to fluency because I take weekly Italki lessons with it now. WoW ASL is something I have always wanted to learn, or at least, the Dutch version. Such an important aspect of life when you’re able to fully comprehend sign language! Hahah you are a true language enthusiast! I loved diving into the Chinese language. I achieved HSK 1 and 2 before it all became too difficult hahaha no joking. But it is hard! Curious to hear what you think about studying Chinese. And by all means, keep on dabbling in any language! It’s such a fun process!

I read "Tintin and the Black Isle" in Scottish Gaelic. Harry Potter and other titles are also published in Gaelic too. There are many Gaelic and Irish words in English. "Hi" is one of them. It's less niche than you think. When I first started formally studying it I was also studying Japanese and teaching English to Scandinavians. A lot of Scandinavian words are found in Scots (Lallans). Stick with it. The film "Centurion" with Michael Fassbender and Eva Green features Gaelic too.

Duolingo premium is pretty handy for being able to make as many mistakes as you want, which I found handy when trying to use it to learn languages I genuinely have no standing in (or am getting defeated by French grammar once more lol) but if you don't use it ALL THE TIME it's not worth it. I do have about 5 other people on my family plan though and most of them use it a lot, so money's worth overall
@BecomingaPolyglot

This is the useful answer I was looking for haha thank you! I actually did consider it, especially because of the family plan they introduced. And also because of the unlimited amount of trial and errors you’re allowed to make. But no I understand what you’re saying! So thank you for your honesty. I might look into the family plan!

I am a premium account user because of the way it funds people in developing world countries. It has improved greatly in the past 3 years and was so bad when it was launched that I deleted it. It's a useful tool, but not the main or only source for learning The increasing use of A I. in some of the languages is still buggy. Generally I receive feedback when I correct language errors in the app.

Gàidhlig is actually VERY regular with the spelling especially after 1974 or so. Far more so than English, to be honest. Once you learn the patterns you won't have trouble with reading anymore. As far as Gàidhlig learners, we're everywhere. We just don't advertise all that often, and it's only a census question in Scotland and Ireland as far as I know and nowhere else. So...Celtic Studies? Kind of a wide field... there are what, seven modern languages? Do you mean old Goidelic? Brythonic? Gaulish? "Celtic" doesn't really mean much. Grammar should be the last thing you really learn. Like any language, first learn to speak and to listen. Just like a baby. Languages are just talking, after all.
@BecomingaPolyglot
@BecomingaPolyglot 6 ай бұрын
I will be honest that I really struggle with the spelling of Celtic languages! But you’re right, once you know the patterns it’s more doable. I am learning old Irish in university right now. Next year Middle Welsh. During the time of filming this video, regarding Scottish Gaelic, it felt for me like an introduction to the Celtic languages. And as I knew nothing, it was a complete surprise as to the difficulty of this language (group). Now I’m three months into learning old Irish and the one thing we solely learn is grammar in order to translate old manuscripts properly. I gather you are a speaker of one of these Celtic languages?
@Po0pypoopy
@Po0pypoopy Жыл бұрын
No offense but I don’t see you going far with this language …. It is solely spoken in Scotland and finding resources is virtually impossible unless you want to spend heavy money on a private online tutor. sadly, we would like to enjoy learning other rare languages like myself wanting to learn Icelandic and Faroese but it’s useless unless you live there
@BecomingaPolyglot
@BecomingaPolyglot Жыл бұрын
I get what you’re saying and it’s true, it’s super niche. Maybe I failed to mention this in my video. For my next university studies I’m majoring in English history and literature. So therefore I’m choosing Celtic to broaden my perspective, being able to read old manuscripts and such! And Scottish Gaelic for now helps me create a point of reference when learning old Irish after the summer! However! There are a lot of free resources for learning Scottish Gaelic actually. I will create a short video about it ☺️ Do not give up on learning a language when you feel like you cannot use it. Honestly, I choose this because I like learning and studying it. Not because I want to walk into a pub and ask ‘Ciamar a tha thu’ to everyone 😂☺️
