@pauldeanda49857 күн бұрын
Actually, they could have done better! Life is not about how we want to live it, but about how we should live it. It’s the biggest mistake that too many people make in their younger years, then end up with limited mean in their older years. I’m living the so called “American Dream”, not bc of America being what it is, but bc I made sacrifices and put fun and joy aside in my younger years. I did not feel that I was entitled to anything, aside from what I worked for.

My husband and I made a choice to earn less and own less. Together we were quite comfortable. He is deceased and the government reimburses me as if I was always single and just getting on. Fortunately I own a small home I can sell and use for my extraordinary expenses.

@pauldeanda4985 Thinking you have control over things like the birth lottery, job loss, sickness, divorce, inflation etc. is the biggest mistake people make in their younger years. Medical bills are the number one reason for bankruptcy. If only everyone could be as awesome, or probably more likely, as fortunate as you were. Strange place to flex. 🙄

My sister very kindly left me her house when she passed last spring. My rent had gone from $900 for around 1000 square feet to my current $1700 fot 560 square feet. I’m 64, expecting my job to be eliminated, and I am lucky my sister thought of me in her will. I still have the apartment, and am still working on moving, but if it weren’t for her I would be homeless after this job goes away. This is a real crisis, for so many.

My mother left me her apartment in Fla when she passed. The county reassessed the value and the taxes went up more than 400%. Yes, 400 percent +. Oh, but I could file for homestead exemption the following year, which would have reduced the taxes by $700. It's a very sick society that we are living in. Corruption in govt. Edit: oh, and if I wanted to get a roommate to help pay all of that, they will go up on the tax and threaten you if you don't disclose that you have a roommate.

I live in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, where 1000 US dollars a month can enjoy a very good life, there is absolutely no need to live in the car, you can go to the hospital directly if you feel uncomfortable, you can make an appointment on the first day and see a doctor to solve the problem on the second day, even if there is no medical insurance. The cost is very, very low. My wife and I sold our home after we retired in 2020 and bought a 2011 fifth wheel with the profits and had it moved into a nice RV park in Arizona. We do not own a truck because we don't pull it and can't afford a truck at todays prices. We have no debt and the park including rent and propane and electric comes to less than $550 a month. The park has a laundry mat and the rent includes water, sewer and wi-fi internet. Even though we could easily afford the house we got sick of the space being used to store our junk so sold almost everything and became minimalists. Everyone has to do what feels right at any point in their life.

Well, in all fairness, most people who prepare even in a modest way for their retirement end up with the retirement that works out pretty close to what they planned. I don’t know why people need to repeat the meme that nothing’s guaranteed so I don’t plan if you choose not to plan. You can live your life exactly the way you want it to, but that’s kind of misinformation. Again, just to restate the vast majority of people who do some financial planning with any level of responsibility end up with a decent retirement that they kind of expected.

But, I live in a beautiful 2 BR apt with wifi, water and electricity for less than $500/month; I even have a private backyard! To give you an idea of groceries, I pay $2.40 for a dozen jumbo eggs. A meal at a decent restaurant can be as little as $2.60. Parts of Ecuador on the coastal regions can be ALMOST as dangerous as a large American city, but in the higher, central regions it is very safe. The people are wonderful, the healthcare is rated as being better than the U.S. I could go on-and-on, but it is something for you to consider. You could have a great life here for under $1,000 for everything. There's a large expat community here so if you don't speak Spanish, it would not be a problem - although I'm taking lessons so I can at least communicate basic needs out of respect. Anyway, it's a nice option to consider. You can even become a permanent resident after two years and a full citizen after five years, if you wanted to. You mentioned that you are an adventurer and that you don't have many friends there, so... You could even continue your YT channel and video your adventures in a new country! Good channel I’m a random visitor. Glad you can monetize the tube. I have 77 year old mother who in recent years has developed Alzheimer’s - luckily for us when mom raised us 3 kids as a single mom working as an RN - to be fiercely independent and that meant not being a renter making somebody else rich. So our task is managing her multiple properties while she pretty much plays with her chickens in her 3 acre backyard in SoCal. If it was not for her smart decisions over the decades we would be spending thousands of dollars a month on healthcare assisted living facilities . I do a lot of driving from SF Bay Area to SoCal to take her to medical appts when it’s my turn. She is so Indep she refuses to live with us kids and she is still healthy enough to live independently although recently had her drivers license revoked and at any moment things could change and we will be forced to make some tough decisions. For the youngsters in the audience - focus on being as financially indep as you can bc this govt will not take care of you. We are all a health crisis away from potential financial ruin in the current system we live in

I am 77. I seriously considered the nomad lifestyle for years. Then I found this wonderful place to live. My landlord is a real peach, I live in a safe and quiet neighborhood in an old house that has 5 separate, one-bedroom apartments. The rent includes water, sewer and garbage removal. The washer and dryer are 75 cents. The electric and heat are low. The rent is very low. The only drawback is living on top of a high hill that gets all the wind and snow. But the landlord takes care of snow removal, too. I was very lucky to find this place as my sons and grandsons live within a 30-minute drive. I do spend a lot of time alone, but I like being alone a lot of the time. I really admire you for all the things you are doing and for sharing your journey. Best wishes. Be happy and well.

I do want ro take up van life and have already learn quite a bit about it. The only hurdle is... I need to pass my driving licence yet. Since I was failing at my lessons I consulted and was diagnosed with adhd. I'm hoping to go on meds that will help me focus enough to drive properly. I can see my future in vanliving with just the books I love, my cpap machine and only the stuff I need. I'm already minimalist. Your video popped up on my feed. I’ll be 64 this year and I’m afraid I’ll be in the same situation in a few years. I’m disabled and living on a fixed income is getting harder with rent, food utilities and gas prices continuing to skyrocket. I’ve been researching how to be a car-based nomad for about a year. My biggest problem is that my car is 17 years old now and is continuing to show its age. I’ve spent almost $2000 in repairs over the last 18 months and now my transmission is showing signs of needing repair. I’ve nearly tapped out all my emergency fund and probably don’t have enough to cover a transmission, so now I don’t know how I’m even going to be able to live in my car. I’m sure I won’t be able to get a car loan even for a used car. I’m not telling you this for sympathy. I’m just glad that you have a reliable car that you can live in, even though it sucks that that even has to be your only real option. I had it mostly figured out and still have some time to be able to live in my car, but now that looks very bleak for my future. Anyway, I’m done rambling. I’m definitely going to subscribe to follow your journey. Stay safe out there. Get yourself a tazer and some pepper spray for protection. Make sure you cover your windows for added security. I also have some debt that I need to pay off and am planning on getting that cleaned up within the next year or two. Maybe by then, I’ll have the extra income to be able to buy a more reliable vehicle so I won’t end up homeless. Take care of yourself.

Nothing by accident, as Im nestling down to sleep scrolling KZbin videos you popped up. Im almost your age and back in the day I too was homeless living at a campsite with no vehicle, the struggles are real but with determination and faith you can do whatever you put your mind to, I wanted out of that situation and it worked out for me and my tribe (4 children, a grandbaby & at the time injured partmer) quite a load to carry by myself but I walked 20 miles down the canyon park to work sometimes 10 hr shifts having to walk 20 miles up that hill to our campsite, it was quite the challenge but it provided our way out. Granted you and I are retired now but I still believe in God's promises for our lives, He has good plans to prosper us so it is with this same spirit of trust that God is real and can do whatever He chooses, I'm asking Him to bless you abundantly and open up the floodgates of Heaven to rain down so many blessings and miracles that you will never doubt again, Jesus is Lord, He loves you and when you believe His promises will make a future that will produce more than double for your troubles beautiful brave child of the Most High God ❤ You have value and you matter, yout life and testimony matter, hugs 🙏🫶

This is yet another reason why it's best for families (family members) to live together, under the same roof, if possible... Split expenses.... Our society really needs to work on family moreso than pushing independence outside and far away from the family.. You can remain independent while still remaining close to family.. I have an adult child that has moved back into the family home, yet remains independent financially, etc... We all share family "duties / responsibilities", but that flows well....... Not sure why our society had the idea that kids moving away and essentially cutting all but holiday visit ties is essential or positive whatsoever.. When we look at societies around the world who DON'T do what we do, we see tight knit families who care for the children of the family as well as their elders.. Everyone has a "turn" as they move through life...

But have my house, with a fixed amount remaining mortgage. I pay that & our bills without issue. Mom's a retired psych nurse. We are introverts, love books & good coffee. In fact, i have a collection. My friend's favorite aunt was librarian at Texas A&M. You remind us of her. I live in a small town, Guthrie OK. You would be welcome here for as long as you needed or. It safe small town 30 miles outside OKC. OKC has nationally recognized physicians in practically every discipline for health needs and has everything typical of 500k+ cities (suburbs notwithstanding). I've an extra room upstairs. (Oh, another interesting fact: the first territorial/state librarian-archivist for the State of Oklahoma lived in my house in 1907. (Really) Should the stairs become an issue we can eventually make other arrangements. Guthrie has one of the lowest costs of living in the country, historic architecture, festivals, a victorian Christmas celebration, antique shops, little theatre. It would be quite a drive but i would NOT need or want to charge you rent/utilities for a room. You would only need to worry about your own bills. You would be most welcome to stay as long as you wanted. We dont judge anyone either. In fact, we have all been there. It took us years to stabilize. Guthrie is safe. You can stay as private as you wish. OKC has the moniker 'Big Friendly'. If interested, we can visit by phone for a bit for assurance & safety sake. Best wishes to you wherever your travels take you.

Just seeing your channel for the first time. Your story is common among retirees. We had good jobs, we think we retired reasonably well and a few short years later we have drained our savings and started using lines of credit or cards to survive. I don’t know what the answer is. You are not alone…I suppose others have told you the same. I wish you well.

You hang in there Maam! You will get through it! You appear to be a tough lady and your wisdom really shines through with every thought that you share. Please, whatever you do,...do NOT ever share your location or full image of your vehicle! There are crazies out there as you know and we need you safe!!!

Sending you well wishes. I just turned 40 and my mother is 70! I just couldn’t imagine my mother in her car at this age, but maybe because her health isn’t comfortable enough for me.

I too am struggling to survive in an RV on a friends property. Im just scraping by on SS at 62. Its so sad what has happened to our nation. Reading the Bible and books like Through the gates of splendor helps me appreciate even what little I have. God bless you and you are in my prayers.

When you were younger and working, did no one tell you that social security was never meant to fund our whole retirement ? It was only meant to help. I’m 59… my husband is 61 and going to retire in a few months, months before he turns 62. He will still work for himself part time. We can make it (barely on social security alone) but we do have savings that we’ll hang onto in case we need that for , another car, newer appliances etc. Life happens. People need to save , and invest as MUCH as they can while they’re working. I brown bagged all my lunches, I brought coffee to work, I’m a scrimper. Anyway I can save , I will save. You can still work part time at age 62 and get your social security

@@cjhoward409, As a 70-year-old that quit working at 65 working retail I am able to live on Social Security only with a paid for mortgage and a 2020 vehicle paid for no debt except utilities housing / car insurance that I pay monthly I am able to save 1/3 of that money every month. I do have a small 401K Roth IRA and CD but I don't have to live on that at this time. I would agree with you that Social Security was not meant to be the only income but some people can live on that very well depends on your bills lifestyle and where you live

@@cjhoward409but only a limited amount….check on it…I think the limit is an annual income around $20,000 to $25,000 before they start taking Social Security away from you.

@@debbieframpton3857 consider doing a direct rollover of your 401k into a Traditional IRA…….you will escape being taxed on it right now if it’s a direct rollover. I suggest this because I’ve heard they’re trying to sneak legislation through in the new administration that gives your employer/ former employer direct access to 401k funds to spend on whatever they please. In an IRA you don’t have those worries. Also investing in Index funds is also a good bet! Your 401 k or Traditional IRA becomes subject to Required Minimal Distributions the year you turn 73. I’m 71.., and letting my Traditional IRA grow until that time. I also have a regular brokerage fund ( it’s not very big) that I’m using for investing at this time and for taking little bits of funds out of if I need it. At 73 I’ll start drawing Required Minimum Distributions the year from the Traditional IRA and either use that for living expenses or put some or all of it in the regular brokerage account. Right now I’m trying to live on Social Security only if I can…

New subscriber here...keep your chin up hun! Honestly, anyone could find themselves in this situation even if you have good financial wealth right now. Loss of job, divorce, health issues, bodily injury to name a few could quickly change the status of any nest egg set aside for anyone. I am glad you have found a way to pay your bills and find some peace. Lifting you up in prayer today ❤.
