vau0807 I think the point is that long before you ever get to the stage Kathleen is at, you should change your situation so that you can afford to save a nest egg. Everyone has the ability to change their destiny and don't let anyone ever tell you different. It seems to me that a lot of people set up their lives the way they want them to be and then figure out a way to pay for it. That seems dumb. Live within your means. Don't be a irresponsible and have a bunch of children that you can't afford. Don't move into a place that you can't afford. Don't open credit card accounts. Blah blah blah. It's called responsibility and accountability. Both of which this lady has. If she can survive the way that she is now then why couldn't she have lived cheaply and saved earlier in life? She could have she just chose not to.

I agree Ben, I live in Australia, and in the last few years it has become nearly all part time or casual work, and if you earn too much you can't get social security (who I used to work for!!!) but it can be $1,00 over and you are cut off, and then you still can't afford to pay your rent an bills and living expenses. So many underemployed people now who are scraping to make ends meet, yet the stats say % of people are working, and how good as it went up so many %. But that can be someone who only got 2 hours of casual work a week and they call them employed. It is such a rort...most people want to be gainfully employed, but more and more we will see people living out of cars etc. I am only lucky I am at my mothers not paying rent, but having to care for her as she ages, as a nurse I couldn't get enough shifts to pay my high rent and had to give in and move in with her, at her request. Kathleen is a pioneer..hopefully I will be doing that soon, but it's great to see these vids and how people are managing in a more and more money hungry world, where there is a big divide between the haves and the have nots...

I then worked in the medical field for over 30 yrs. I loved my job. Felt very proud to be able to leave each day with a clean desk. Then I accidentally injured my back in 1997. I didn't plan to watch all of this AND then read a bunch of comments, but I was so struck by this woman's TOTAL LACK of self-pity. And, btw, nothing wrong with feeling a bit of self-pity now and again, but then snap yourself out of it. And, i'm saying this for your OWN sake. I'm 65 and things aren't great now, but I've found that one of the great things is that I follow national and international news A LOT, and everyday, I see and hear how SO much tougher the 7 plus billion people on this planet have it. Nothing snaps me out of my self-pity so QUICKLY. Again, for your OWN sake. I remember when I was MUCH younger, I felt sorry for myself a LOT, and when I finally realized it and gave it up, I felt like a huge weight had been lifted from my shoulders. (Didn't mean to even bring all this up when I started this about Kathleen, BUT just wanted to pass the word about how WONDERFUL it is when you give up self-pity. Speaking as someone who has been there, too, so not criticizing anyone AT ALL who is experiencing it. It can become a BAD HABIT and totally sap you of energy and hope).

Though a $1000 a month isn't much; living in her car gives her a financial edge because she don't have to pay rent. She could save up a bunch of money after a few years and pay cash for a nice used motor home or travel trailer... if she wanted to.
@midos67678 жыл бұрын
Cecilia Watt I agree. I also think at her age, she ought to be living in at least a travel trailer so she'd have a warm bed and running water & a place to shower & etc. Living in a subcompact car out in the woods would be difficult even for a young person in their twenties.. let along an elderly woman in her 60's.
@midos67678 жыл бұрын
***** You're right, she'll give up on her outdoor car living when winter hits. She makes a thousand a month so she don't need to live in her car. With her low income, she could easily qualify for housing assistance such as section 8 or HUD housing. Through those options she could get a small apartment with low rent & have safe indoor housing. Or she could purchase a travel trailer & make payments on it & move into an RV Park.
@midos67678 жыл бұрын
John Lee Bass Its outrageous how landlords on the west coast charge like $2500 a month for little shit hole apartments. In the Midwest where I live.. for $2500 a month you can rent or buy a huge 4 bedroom house with a massive yard or acreage in a nice area. And $2500 a month can rent or buy a large downtown loft apartment or Condo with plenty of square footage. The average homeowner in my area has a mortgage payment of around $500 or more for average sized single family homes.

I'm lucky here in Albuquerque to have a subsidized apartment for $400 a month which allows me to live in a beautiful downtown apartment on my Social Security retirement which is meager. If it weren't for HUD and other forms of subsidy, I would be living in my Toyota matrix which is very similar to her car. At 64, I would rather not live so rough. As an artist I have supplemented my income by being a temporary worker and indeed that is no way to build up a pension or to even further contribute to FICA. So, Kathryn, if you grow weary of roughing it, come to Albuquerque and let me show you how to find one of many subsidized apartments. On your Social Security, you can do very well here. "Susan Evans" as far as the rent and subsidized apartment situation, I am in the same boat here in NY. I am lucky I got a nice studio apartment for $261 a month. Of course the way it is done here is that every year the building management takes the previous year's income in to account and the rent will go up or down according to whether I made more or less money the previous year. I live hand-to-mouth with the money I make at my job, but I have a place to stay and I even sometimes have a friend stay with me who herself does not have a home of her own. She is homeless but not like a majority of homeless people who are out in the streets She stays with different friends at different times. She is lucky to have several people who she stays with so as not to be sleeping on a park bench. She is in her 70s but quite healthy even though she has certain medical problems due to age. SHe is of a certain generation of people who had lived a normal life when younger, she had a middle class upbringing and then later as an adult she went to college and married and had kids and even owned or co-owned a home but then some time later in life things fell apart and she found herself without a home and she lost most of her belongings and a good many people who now are older, homeless people had gone through the same thing basically , and they are mostly women because a lot of women who came of age decades ago went on to outlive their husbands or they had depended on their husband's income and had no money of their own (etc).. My friend's marriage ended, she could not find work and was too old to do any difficult work that was available, she had injured her neck in a car accident a while back, and it was all during a time when the economy and society was changing, and also it had already changed so that the cost of living was high and there was a housing problem etc etc and she was somewhere in her middle age and could not just start all over , so she lost her home and had to stay with other people and she found a way to make a bit of money by doing focus groups and product testing and clinical trials ( and some of you may be familiar with that) but she never was able to get back to having enough money to pay for a place to stay except maybe a very cheap hotel for a night or two. I met her while doing a paid clinical trial. We became friends. She taught me certain things. She has managed to find new friends doing focus groups and clinical trials who agree to let her stay with them. So she stays with different people in different states . She gets a very small pension because she used to work years ago, so she has a bit of money to travel to different locations and stay with different people for weeks or months at a time. She would like to live out of a car but it has to be big enough so that she is not just scrunched up in it otherwise it would be bad for her back. She would like something like a camper but unless she wins the lottery, she would probably never be able to get one.
