no, calisthenics can be made progressively harder until you're doing exercises that are almost impossible, where the resistance and tension are off the chart. if you can do 20 reps of a one arm push up with feet together, you're stronger than most humans. if you can do jumping one-leg squats, you have freakish explosive strength in your legs. also, calisthenics are good for max strength, strength endurance, and explosive strength. Making calisthenics progressive is just more difficult, requires more imagination and creativity.

DavePazz Totally agree, thinking of real world situations I've been in..Weight lifting helps if I need to lift heavy objects like Appliances, TVs, etc. Where as bodyweight helps me move myself...when it comes to rock climbing, rope climbing, martial arts, etc. I just think bodyweight exercises are more fun in general...I love being able to go outside in the woods to climb or to the park and use ledges to do pull ups on.

a tip for dips and pullups - you need to have the scapular strength to keep your shoulders down and in - if during these moves you let your shoulder joint creep out, then you arnt ready and need to do assisted. a proper dip or pullup needs full engagement of the shoulders - it can be tempting to rush ahead and look cool - you will know you wern't ready though if you get shoulder damage.

After 3 years of weightlifting, i decided to try something new and i switched to bodyweight / calisthenics training. This week was my first week and i can tell you it's like starting all over again and i fucking love that challenge. I used to do pullups / weighted dips / squats / deadlifts every week so i think i have the first layer of the cake to start this kind of trianing. Now it's all about push ups variations, dips variations, and A LOT of pullups / chin ups, and hard-core exercices, learning handstands pushups etc.. I can tell you, i feel muscles in my body that i didn't even know of. This is so hard, i look like a noob at the gym :) Thanks for this video, i am even more convinced to continue this type of training now. And it's so refreshing to start something new.

body weight training puts a lot less stress on your joint as they allow a more natural range of motion. also, advanced bodyweight exercises require unmatched levels of full body tension. however, there are still those who argue that bodyweight training isn't as effective as weight lifting when it comes to building muscle. thats because it's often associated with high reps, endurance and the MILITARY.
@kungfuman82

Dammit, now why do you have to make me agree with Hitler? :-P You're absolutely right. People tend to ignore (or don't know) that in order to increase strength in bodyweight exercises, you have to decrease your leverage. Decreased leverage means your muscles have to work harder. Provided your diet is good, you will build muscle. Resistance is resistance!
@BrianHallmond

Wouldn't it be better on your joints, because stuff like a straight bar bench holds your hands in a certain spot so extra pressure is left on the joint as it gets forced into an un natural zone.

I was lucky enough to grow up far out in the country. Swimming, hiking, cut/stacking wood, distance biking, sprinting with my dog, gardening, etc. I was naturally strong as a kid without ever setting foot in a gym. (not to mention the fresh air, water, fruits and vegetables, wild game/well-raised livestock, etc.) And what I love about calisthenics/bodyweight training is that it is REAL exercise that incorporates more than one part of the body.....if you only do things like bench press, bicep curls, leg press, etc., those muscles might get bigger, but they will be essentially useless in a real-world scenario.
@liangjun24

Dae Dalus fully agreed. Remove steroids and supplement from a bodybuilder and ask him to eat normally ,his gains will be almost identical to that of a calisthenics guy.. Resistance is resistance no matter it's calisthenics or weight training. The main idea is to be holistic. No one can expect to look good if they just train one part of their body at a time. Calisthenics trains more than 2 muscle groups simultaneously. it's the way to go man!!!

Saeed mobayed, your are right. Their muscles are full of crap. Believe me if they go for bodybuilding competition and need to remove excess fats and water from their body , they'll look very much like a calisthenics guy. This is because we usually dun hold extra fats and water in our body. Actually calisthenics builds more muscles because we carry our full body weight, compared to ppl doing 20-30 kg dumbells. It's steroids that give weight lifter the added bonus. Bodybuilding and steroid are synonymous. But calisthenics are largely drug free. We workout to achieve performance, not show. Talking about strength, I can carry more weighty equipments compared to my colleagues who hit the gym everyday.

You can easily take the same weight and make it heavier over time. Simply slow down the tempo at which you lift, increase range of motion, use pauses at the most contracted part of the lift, increase reps etc. There's plenty of ways to keep upping the intensity without putting more weight on the "bar". Took me 5 years of bodybuilding to learn that lol, at some point, I just wasn't getting stronger because I wasn't handling my "max" lifting weight properly, so once I concentrated more on the form and doing each rep properly, my strength gains came again.

Training goals change with age. When I was young, it was all about deadlifting 600+, squatting 500+, and benching 405+. But now at 37, I feel and look WAY better from calisthenics. But the reason why some people don't benefit from calisthenics, is because they mindlessly bang out fast reps with crap form. Slow tempo, paused reps, and harder levers matter. Also using progressive overload with added weight is important too.

An oldie but a goodie. I am going back to calisthenics, after 15 months of "bulking", because I have to relocate for three months for work. I actually look forward to it. Unlike most "bodybuilders", who use weights as their primary method, and bodyweight only as an accessory, I agree with Elliott that there are huge advantages to focusing on bodyweight, and only using weights as accessory. If year by year, you can do more Handstand Push-ups, better Chin-ups, and some things like Levers, Flags, and so forth, then you are progressing. However, if you are only "pumping iron", and have no idea how to move your body, are you really better off?

The best exercise is the one you havrnt been doing so far. This applies to everyone, from couch potatoes (who'll benefit from ANY exercise), to the most advanced trainees/athletes. This is ehy exercises like fatmers walks help so much, because so many people had never done them. Thus, a gymnast whose training has plateaued will see a good effect from some lifting, as a bodybuilder will benefit from some bodyweight stuff.
@GodlessShredder
@GodlessShredder 10 жыл бұрын
Do them both, at different times and simultaneously. Weighted calisthenics are amazing. You can hit every muscle in your upper body (minus lower abdominals) with just two exercises, pushups and pullups. Just load a sturdy backpack with some barbell plates and do those two, focusing on increasing either reps or weight with each workout. Your upper body will develop functional strength and look great. Personally, I stick to the barbell for training lower body strength and hypertrophy. Deadlifts and front squats are just too awesome to throw away, and there are only so many calisthenics exercises you can do with a backpack on. A good hybrid program would be to stick with barbells for strength and power training, and weighted calisthenics for bodybuilding, structural integrity and correcting strength imbalances. For fat burning and cardio, just dropping the calisthenics weight and going for endurance would be very effective, along with Elliott's advice about walking 20 minutes daily on an empty stomach.

Bodyweight training just makes sense to me; Sometimes I start my workout with burpees, and the next thing I know is I feel like crawling, jumping, stretching. It's honestly great because it's the natural way the body moves, you don't just stand there and do a repetitive exercise that bores you to death. It's the first time I'm actually experiencing joy when working out, I'm sweating my ass off and by the end of it I feel full of energy -- as it should be -- AND, for a girl, and for doing what seems to me to be so little, I am actually more muscular and lean than I've ever been in my life. I'm definitely sticking with this one.

You cannot really say which is 100% better because it all comes down to preference. if you want a big bodybuilder type look and your looking to gain size go to the gym hit the weights. but if you want a functional strength, a nice blend of appearing big AND ripped bodyweight is the way forward. me personally I love having super low bodyfat functional strength and looking ripped so bodyweight is my favourite but remember im not interested in getting too big. Also chicks seem to prefer that look instead of typical big gym gyms

I do mainly calisthenics (bodyweight training). most people do not realize how many variations there are to make the resistance much more difficult. And just as you have said, I use weights to ascend further while still focusing on bodyweight training. I feel like bodyweight training is beneficial when it comes to practical strength, not for strictly gaining mass and bulking up. I'm glad I saw this video. Currently I'm at a level where I am trying to find some more advanced movements or develope my own to make the exercises a little more intense.

Glad you keep an open mind Elliott. It only took me 40 years to reach this conclusion but it's never too late if you are willing to change. The body is ingenious. It is adaptive and gets used to routine. You have to continue to mix it up so you balance, strength, flexibility, endurance and agility to get the best you. Thanks for a great channel.

People have the mistaken Idea that there are different types of resistance training (bodyweight, weights) to achieve different types of muscle growth, for example toning instead of adding bulk, there's not such thing. Muscles either grow or they don't that's why I think people underestimate bodyweight training and assume it doesn't develop muscle mass as well as weights. Whether you do leg presses or single leg bodyweight squats (workout intensity being equal) your quads are going to develop the exact same way

My focus is on bodyweight training too, pulls chins dips pushup variations etc. Go hard on the concentrics slow on the eccentrics. I supplement with bb deadlifts,squats and calfraises for legs. I allways do full body three to four times a week. If you do this, eat sleep repeat and mix it up a bit sometimes, like, more non weighted sets and or reps and then the other day go heavy and steady on your lifts.. You grow a great physique with lots of functional strength. Stay focused everybody! Cheers, RJ

Completely agree Elliott. When done right bodyweight training like martial arts training creates a foundation of self mastery. And when you can do some of the harder bodyweight exercises that require massive stability and range of motion then your external resistance training is not only going to be better but stay injury-free. I lost my way for a while as well... but now back on point. Preach on brother!

Well if you do the same basic shit for seven years of course its going to be repetitive. That is why in calisthenics you need some goals and do various progressions to achieve those goals. Training like a typical bodybuilder with the same routine isn't going to make you feel interested for too long, you need to train more like a gymnast in body weight training to keep things interesting i.e. always move towards a higher goal, a more difficult exercise.

All of you saying something to the effect of "you can't get as strong without weights/ I know it because I've done bodyweight training for x years" I challenge you to perform the following: -A single strict dead hang one-arm pullup (no kipping, chin passes over the bar) -A single strict one-arm pushup (feet not splayed too far, arm inline) -A set of 20 perfect one-leg squats -A set of 30 perfect hanging straight leg raises -A set of 5 full ROM handstand pushups on parallel bars -A single perfect stand-to-stand bridge If you can do all these, I bow down to you. You are the king of bodyweight training and you can say whatever you want. If not, shut the hell up.
@davidzahry
@davidzahry 7 жыл бұрын
Why such high reps to prove strength though? The individual who can do 20 perfect one-leg squats will not squat twice their bodyweight unless they're incredibly genetically gifited. I was able to 20 at one point, but it did not translate to an incredible back squat. The single leg squat is a complex exercise compared to a 2x bodyweight back squat, but it is not very intense. The 30 perfect hanging leg raises are also a bad example. The better example would be something like front lever pulls. Everything else is on point.

When I try to push something, what works really well is to put your centre of gravity in between your feet and the point of contact with the object being pushed. So if you're pushing a car, lean in as much as you can. Try to make the motion vertical, in a sense, on your body.

Dude hey man, I started doing calisthenics only as of 1 month now due to a vehicle accident I had last year and I found out from an xray that I had 3 cervical or neck herniations and a broken vertebrae. I also found that my 3 discs are 50 to 100 percent herniated along with a chunk of disc sheared off and floating in my neck harassing my nerves and I have 7 discs with severe degeneration. In the last 1.5 years I've cut 20 lbs of weight and changed my diet and I have a cervical decompression apparatus and an inversion table to help me.. I've got some flak from quitting lifting but man I feel strong and alot of my dizziness has gone down.. I collapsed 8 months ago getting into a work truck and have had severe anxiety from my nerves being pinched. I'm 42 and was doing strongman training for 3 years when all this kicked my ass. Thanks for promoting this

Sure, there are many guys, (whose pushup numbers are so high that sets end from boredom instead of failure), who need to lift weights to continue making gains, but there are just as many guys who need to use barbells & machines because bodyweight exercise is too difficult for them.
@lazur1
@lazur1 8 жыл бұрын
A:Yes, as I posted: "...to continue making, (muscular), gains..." Many people don't want to continue making muscular gains. 1/The average guy might simply not want to outgrow his wardrobe, or attract the type of attention a massively muscular man often does, 2/ Weight-class athletes don't want to grow into competing w/naturally-bigger guys. 3/Athletes have an optimal relative strength for their sport. Adding muscle will increase absolute strength but might lower relative strength for a gymnast, sprinter, etc. B: The de facto goal of many trainees is to not work too hard, thus light weights on machines suffice, while never getting strong enough to do a pull-up.

If you're no longer seeing gains from doing push ups, try a different variation. Try wider or incline or decline. Also try diamond push-ups. Or if you're really hardcore, challenge yourself and progress towards planche push ups. Reverting to weights is no excuse.
@lazur1
@lazur1 8 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if you're replying to me, but in any case, here's a more complete opinion: 1/The law of specificity: To increase pushups most efficiently, you must do pushups. To increase your bench press most efficiently, you must bench press. Transference between the two seemingly similar exercises is remarkably poor. One must have a goal to determine which is the better choice,(if not both). 2/More on specificity: Yes, different types of pushups increase the difficulty, but it's because they're working a different combination of the muscles. They aren't simply a more difficult version of the classic pushup, any more than an incline bench press is the progressive step after the straight benchpress. Sooner or later, to truly add difficulty to the straight pushup, external resistance needs to be added, (elastic, partners,etc). Thus, even an advanced calisthenics practitioner becomes essentially a weight-trainer. Bodybuilders, (best example, the late Mike Mentzer), routinely do/(did) weighted chins & dips. No one has ever become nearly that muscular without added weight. 3/ Do you want to be strong for your size, or do you want to get big? Many huge guys have relatively poor relative strength, but are nonetheless much stronger than they'd be at a lower bodyweight. Again, what is your goal? Getting huge will likely destroy you ability to do high-reps of the more esoteric pushup varieties, while high-rep pushups will never get you in the 400 lb bench press club.

There's nothing wrong with merging weight training with bodyweight training. After all, Usain Bolt and every other serious sprinter does heavy squats. Weight (resistance) training creates potential, while bodyweight training turns that potential into performance on the field. You're not meeting your maximum potential if you don't do both.

and isn't that the obvious approach. I have from time to time been confronted with the question of which two lifts I would do if I could only chose two. Always wondered who it was who was planning on rationing me in this way. Except for exercises which are outright rubbish at the outset, why limit yourself. I'm not aware of any serious powerlifter who completely discounts BW exercises. Dips and Pull-ups are the minimum BW exercises a PL would typically consider but may easily extend to walking lunges, various stretches, push ups, and others besides. Why every youtube comments section has to degenerate into a squabble where no reason for argument exists is beyond me. that off my chest, keep up with both, they'll serve you well.

I used to be a gym rat but then i discovered calisthenics. And i love ot way more than the gym for many reasons. 1.saves time because you dont have to go to a gym. You can do it anytime anywhere. 2. Saves money because you dont have to pay for a gym memebership or buy any equipment. Bodyweight is free. 3. Less risk of injury because your joints and muscles are built to handle your body more than they are an external force. 4.gives you good cardio and fat burning without actually having to do cardio. 5. Its freaking COOL! A human flag pole is way cooler than watching somebody do a lat pulldown. 6.way more motivation to keep progressing. A bench press is a bench press it will never change. The only motivation is to add more weight but eventually your strength gains will slow down and motivation is lost. But a pushup is not just a pushup. There are so many different kinds of pushups that you will only be able to do through progressing. You have more options which means more motivation rather than adding an extra 5lbs to each side of the bar. Point is, in my opinion calisthenics is better and weightlifting is overated

To hear someone speak of focus, control, mind muscle connection in such a passionate way, this man is on it. So many times I have seen such poor form, dangerous form from male ego/pissing competitions, it drove me out of the gym and I built my own home gym. I'm currently transitioning from 26yrs bodybuilding, including competing, into more bodyweight type training after sequesting a disc in my back which has been a scary experience. This bodyweight stuff is hard work, but as the guy says, done with the correct type of focus, control, it really hits the muscle tissue deeply. I have to be honest, I am still benching, I just love it, but nearly everything else is bodyweight. There is nothing to argue about who or what is better........SMASH the shit out of it in the gym, in the park, wherever you train and whatever you do, enjoy every minute of it and bollocks to what other people think........build that physique, cos this 41yr old still is after some serious injuries, still have a strong 6 pack, still love it, still going strong........... Train hard brothers and sisters..............

I would have to disagree with body weight vs weightlifting. As a martial artist of 19 years and someone with a bit of weight training experience,I can say no matter how much body training you do you will never equal the strength of a body builder. Lifting weights in the gym will get you stronger with lifting weights in the gym where as body weight training will get you stronger in body weight training. The first time I started lifting weights I found despite all the push ups, sit ups,chin ups, I still had a hard time lifting weights,however after time of going to the gym I obviously got stronger. However one thing i have noticed at least with my own personal experience body weight training will make you more lean than weight lifting but not stronger or bigger. If martial artists found it easy to get a full body workout that would create bigger and stronger or equal strength, why would we bother lifting weights. I can guarantee you everyone of those MMA UFC guys weight lift as part of their training,so there is a big difference between the two types of training. I have never had a problem getting ripped but building mass has always been a problem for me.

And wen ur done with 1 Set, relax for 1 Minute... I did this for 2 Days already (today is my Second day) but I'm already seeing Results! and I hope u will too!

I didn't have much difficulty in doing body weight exercises in the distant past. Though when I got back into working out a few years ago, I was doing a mix of weight training and body weight exercises. And I discovered that I had become hopeless with body weight exercises. My free weights were progressing okay but my performance with the body weight exercises was pathetic. I was a lot heavier than I used to be so that probably had a lot to do with it. More recently, I got back into exercise again. Though this time, Ive changed things around dramatically. Ive decided to concentrate nearly 100% on body weight exercises and do them every day (alternating with different muscle groups on different days.) And I have seen a big improvement in my performance with these kinds of exercises. I can now do chin ups again and Ive significantly increased my number of push ups. I'm working on improving my dips as well.

I've been working out for two years now so im still learning lots in the gym but I've just gotten back into bodyweight exercises and started moderate - advanced exercises and my improvements in the gym have been so much better. Looking forward to perfecting them and then perfecting my deadlift

dude, elliot, you need to make podcasts, so i can listen to this shit whilst working out. you motivate the shit out of me, and put the actual no bullshit science behind it, and i love that. i couldnt imagine working out and being to listen to this, rather just watch it on youtube at work, KEEP IT UP BRO, btw 319 pounds, almost 40% BMI, going to half that in a year!

As always great answer.I really thought you would say iron and more iron, but yes ,I have seen people with great strength and mobility that only do body weight.Keep up the good work Eliot.

The Basis of Body weight training is Movement, Concentration, Creativity, and Control. It really turns into a flowing meditation. It takes a lot more knowledge to progress though body weight training than other forms which is both a negative and a positive.

I have been bodyweight training for a little more than a year and a half. I got great results!! I am much stronger than I once was! Pullups, Pushups, Dips and Muscleups are my favorite things to do! I get on the weights too and I still lift heavier than lots of people that just lift weights and thats all. I like to watch people like Adam Raw and Crossfitrjg.Good stuff! I'll continue pushing myself to the limit!

Thats why elliot is the best who admits to not being the best at body weight training but is ready to learn. This is my favorite channel.

Great video. In my opinion bodyweight training is the art of building physical strength and fitness. I gave up barbells, dumbells etc last year and have never looked back. Leaner, stronger and my joints feel great again.

What you said at the end there make perfect sense!! A lot of guys that just lift weights even from the start have big muscles sure but they're not cut and stuff little to no abs too
