Why I bought a Panasonic Gh5S in 2022

With everyone focused on Sony a7s III, FX3, Fx6, Red Komodo, and C70s, why would I buy a Panasonic GH5S.

Just opted for the GH5s over all the other overpriced hyped up cameras in 2023. Found a new one for $1200 and could not resist the value at that price. Did my 1st shoot with it over the weekend and could not be happier... Great vid/review.

I chose GH5s because 1.B-RAW shooting. It's a fancy suprise that not long after I got this camera, the latest firmware update made it easy to adjust White Balance of B-RAW shot by GH5s and Video Assist in DaVinci Resolve. 4 years after GH5s' launch, Panasonic deserves my respect. 2.OLPF. I shoot screens a lot, without this, moires can mess all footage up. 3.No inbody stablization allows more precise camera movement control.

We already had 2 GH5’s and 1 GH6, and then we ended up getting 3 GH5S cameras in 2022 to add to our LUMIX collection.

You know what's crazy man......no one talks about the focus by gimbal button. NO ONE. I've watched countless, countless gimbal reviews over the last 4 years. WAY too many than I should have watched. I'm a person that analyzes and overanalyzes gear......and you and one other guy are the only people who have ever even mentioned this. None of the big youtubers have ever mentioned it in any of their DJI reviews or Zhiyun reviews and that blows my mind. It's a HUGE feature of the gimbal. So thank you for mentioning it. Second thing....can you adjust the autofocus mid-shot, or only before you hit record? Also, does it work if you are also using an external recorder like the atomos ninja V?

Hey Corey, Absolutely. It's essential to using a camera with poor AF or even being able to manually control the focus depending on the shots. On the GH5S you can control focus while recording. I think there is one mode like VFR mode maybe that you can't. With external recorder? I'm sure you can, I've never before.

you know you can set a face (a specific one) as priority on these lumix cameras! also if you do want to use autofocus, the sigma trio of f/1.4 primes (16mm/30mm/56mm) dont do the pulsing or fluttering that annoys people so much.

Great info man! Just picked one of these up super cheap (400 bucks) to pair with my gh5 ii. I was on the fence about going back to an s5 but I wanted the 240fps slo mo option and the smaller lens options

Glad I could help! Just had a client pick up a S5IIx which I did a shoot out between this and thought overall it held it's own. If you do a lot of multicamera shoots, MFT is the way to go. I also love the 240fps. I've found myself including it in a lot of my work.

still use my GH5S a lot on my dji ronin sc (first generation) with a sigma 16mm F1.4 that sees in the dark. Mostly use manual focus and change the screen in black and white to easier see the focus peaking. 200 fps in 1080p is also amazing! Great tip about ronin sc 2 about focus pulling. Will have a look at that one. Now I push autofocus a lot on the touchscreen.

Great Video Bro. I’m in Loganville GA, we sync up and grow some Business together. Shot Pro Photography for Weddings, now crossing into Cinematography. Have 2 Canon EOS Rs and recurrently bought a GH5 and probably going to get 1 more to have 4 for different Situations. I been having a time trying to decided between the GH5, GH5 II & GH5S since I have lights already. Love to chop it up with you if you down.

I shoot with a GH5S. Ive been thinking about selling it and getting a GH6 or just keeping it and getting the GH6 as a 2nd camera. Not sure if its worth it though.

The Pana GH5s is a beast. I've been using it mostly on a gimbal for the last 2 years. It is important to turn off the camera's internal image stabilization when using it with a gimbal. Then you can shoot great pictures with it. And because of the last update, even the autofocus has become so good that it can be used without hesitation...

AH..GH5s doesn't have internal stabilisation? Are you thinking the 5 or are you advocating also turning off the lens stabilisation?

@@KimReddin Right! I had expressed myself wrong. Of course I meant the image stabilizer of the respective lens. In any case, it should be switched off when using the camera with a gimbal...

I get microshake with gh5s + ronin s. I get better footage with gh5 with is on with the ronin s :O

Some gimbals, like the Weebil S, allow you to pull focus on the gimbal via a usb c connection.
