Anne of All Trades

Күн бұрын

Starting with a childhood listening to classical music, many years in Orchestra playing violin and viola, and finally hearing Nickel Creek for the first time, I feel I was always destined to find the mandolin. I've been tinkering around on the mandolin since I was 13 years old, and building my own was actually the catalyst to start woodworking as an adult. Here I am seven years later holding the instrument I found in the growth rings of a tree thanks to a few good friends and some good old fashioned sweat equity.
A HUGE thank you to Woodcraft Gallery for their continued support of my channel. Shop online and find classes at www.woodcraft.com
Another big thanks to www.StewMac.com for sending specialized tools and supplies for the mandolin building class. For a list of supplies we ordered through Stewmac, check out my blog post about building a mandolin on my website, www.anneofallt...

I'm Anne of All Trades. In Seattle, I have a woodworking, blacksmithing and fabrication shop, a selection of furry friends, and an organic farm. This channel is aimed at sharing my passion for working with my hands, being a good steward of the earth, and preserving antiquated skills and traditions.

Absolutely loved this!!! The music piece in the middle of the video was so relaxing...so calming...yes!!! Thanks for sharing all the projects and going-ons around the homestead. It has been really entertaining to watch! My buddy and I play guitar and our last few campouts in Montana were so special because we just started playing and folks just stopped by to listen and share a campfire together! I think bringing music out in the wild is one of my favorite joys! Please keep adding your own playing in your videos! We love it! :)

Ok I see you slid this one in and I overlooked it (must have been a lot going on for me). Love the background information you shared with all of us it is inspiring. You gave some of Anne of All Trades playing her Mandoline yea!!!!! Sounded great and is very much appreciated. Hope you are giving some thought to my suggestion, and I know you are busy and you can fill in all of the jokes to emphasis just how busy you are but it would be great to have an Anne of All Trades sit down 15 to 20 minute or however long you make it studio session of just you performing Music on your Mandoline. I am sure there a lot of your followers that think of this as a special treat maybe make a CD and put that puppy in your online store for sale???? Just don't rule the possibility of it out, and no I have no interest in music or the music industry other than I like to listen to music... again wonder if you could cover a Beatles song like Norwegian Wood or Yesterday hmmmm. Be careful, be safe, and enjoy your life. Thanks for allowing us other folks to hitch a ride with you. (Wonder if a French Polishing of your new Mandoline will in anyway change the sound of it?)

Children like Anne have always been with us- a hundred years ago no one thought much about it. Today if you are not literate in the latest binary craze you are condemned to be an ignoramus. Anne's music teacher was a boor and an a$$- and tried to make something beautiful in Anne's life go away. I'm from New Orleans- children who couldn't read sheet music created jazz, and nurtured it to greatness. Louis Armstrong learned to play the trumpet by ear. I was fortunate to be in a French Quarter club one night when he came calling; he listened to the set for a second or two, blew out his spit valve, tunes it from what he was hearing, and stepped in, just stepped in.That night I learned the difference between my very good technical ability to play music, and someone who was music. Play on, Anne- if it makes you happy it will bring a smile to the rest of us.

Love the history. It was very moving form me as it touched on many parts of my life. My bride is a "PK" and I spent a large portion of my life as an instrument builder, both as a "Pipe Organ Builder (professionally) and string interments as a hobby. This included a Hammered Dulcimer; Mountain Dulcimer (fretted); a bowed and Plucked Dulsemers; restored 2 classical Guitars (one over 100 years old) along with many other projects. This is why my bride refers to me as "a jack of all trades, and master of none". What I have found in all of this is, do what you love, this will make your life infinitely better. I have noted that you are doing exactly this. Keep up with your awesome projects, and continue smiling as you do. On another note, your joy as a maker has rubbed off on my daughter, and for that, I will be ever grateful.

Great story Anne! I just watched your mandolin build video too and really enjoyed it. I'm a mandolin player, and decided to try and build one shortly after I started playing. I got all the wood, some tools, plans (Siminoff book), and joined a local woodworking club to get started. Unfortunately, life got in the way and I put it aside. What? No Paganini on mandolin? Similarly, when I was in Jr/Sr high school in Spain, I studied classical and flamenco guitar. I didn't realize how the music would resonate in my soul for the decades which followed. I haven't yet built my guitar but first I have to finish the kitchen cabinets, build a cedar strip canoe and then an airplane. I did catch a nice silver salmon on a fly rod I built. So much to do...

Just curious, why couldn't you read music? Was it a learning disability?

I'm learning to play music and it is really astounding to me to discover how many musicians can't read music. I've asked for advice a few times and get told, "Oh, don't bother with that crap," and get actively discouraged from learning. Which is weird to me, it's just a way to notate song and express to other musicians how to play your music, or to read the works of others, so while I'm not going to shout to the rooftops that all musicians must learn it, the active discouragement is bizarre. All the same, I love my mandolin as well and like that standard tuning is the same as the violin, so I get better at both instruments at the same time. I LOVE the look of your mandolin. I know you said last video you might stain it, but I don't know, I think the way it looks right now is gorgeous. Maybe one day I can get my hands on an Anne original. ;)

if you can play well by ear it's not necessary, but it requires you being able to *hear* it. I eventually learned, but realized the reason it was so hard is because I'm dyslexic.

@@AnneofAllTrades Super cool of you to respond. One of the best musicians I had the pleasure of knowing couldn't read music. His ability to fall in with whatever instrument he was on, like you he played several, was other-worldly. I'm dyslexic too. Air high five!

Great story! I know a little on the guitar and piano. People always ask me if I play piano because my fingers are long. But I also had the problem of reading music notes. It’s fun for me to draw on guitars now lol.
