Personally I do judo because I have rods in my spine, long term grappling is insanely difficult on my body, and I can't move correctly for certain techniques. I do Judo so I can learn techniques on how to stay up, and if I go down, I can try and get up quickly.

As a black belt in japanese jujutsu myself i am so glad to here that you had such a positive experience of our art and are as fond of it as you are. I also really appreciate that you acknowledge what the art truely is as i feel like there are now a lot of jujutsu dojos that just teach what is basically aikido. It means a lot, so thank you.

When I got back to the states in the 1980's it was a striking comparison. In Japan, there is a Judo Club at every school/university. You can find them within a reasonable area in a commercial district. In the States, it wasn't hard to find one, if you even could. But there was always a Taekwondo school or a Karate one. Of course, it wasn't until the '90's that BJJ came around, so no BJJ school. Now, I can drive down my street and find one or two BJJ schools. It amazing how things have changed.

Always love your take on things. My own journey lead me towards BJJ as it was a specific gap I was trying to fill, as I had no grappling experience at all. Keeping in mind I moved from an older American Kenpo school to a Kenpo 5.0 school, so it was a gap I needed to fill quickly, as the Kenpo 5.0 school has me testing through the syllabus all over again. The best part has been that the 5.0 grappling has bled into my BJJ, and my BJJ is bleeding into my 5.0, and what was once a scary place for me sparring, is now a place I am a lot more comfortable.

I have done all three (Bjj, Judo, and Japanese jujutsu) and I can say if you choose to learn any of them you will have fun, you just have to know what you want out of the art. Judo is very sport focused for throwing. In my opinion their isn’t a better art to learn for gi throwing techniques. However it is very likely you will get injured. It’s best to do while your younger. And at least at my school their was more kids than adults in the class. Bjj can be sport or self defense oriented it depends on the school. I have only done sport bjj. We spent a lot of time ground grappling. If you tap early their are less injuries than judo. I had a blast every time I train. Even if I get tapped out. You will see a lot of people in their 20s/30s in class. It’s the best martial art for ground grappling. Also most schools will have Muay tai / kickboxing classes so you can learn striking too. JJJ is almost entirely self defense focused. It is good for both kids and adults. It is easy on the body. In my opinion if you just want to know how to defend yourself it is a good choice. However it isn’t great if you want to see how you would do against a resisting opponent. The training methods tend to be your partner stand still while you do your series of moves. Pick one of these arts and have fun.

In my experience JJJ schools are more booky and technical than BJJ schools which comes at the price of live sparring. We did kickboxing pad work, takedowns, and ground grappling. I got the best instruction on how to triangle choke and guard reverse I ever got at a JJJ school but we never really rolled there. There was a big focus on "grab my wrist" counters which I really did not care for. JJJ also seems to be marketed as self defense more often than BJJ and attracts a different kind of crowd. There was one guy there with a similar athletic tall build that I enjoyed training with but the rest were very skinny women I was afraid to hurt and overweight men who had a personal vendetta against my ribcage and farted all class. I'd tell you if you want to learn techniques and drill them in a deep detailed level that JJJ is for you but if you want to overcome resisting opponents then BJJ or Judo are better options. I believe BJJ or Judo will make you a better fighter while JJJ is a great supplement to a base art.

Kano created judo to be an amalgam of the different ju jitsu schools it is a fantastic art but there are very few schools that practice no gi or self defence judo which includes the strikes and other techniques forbidden in the sport. Judo is practiced both with non resisting and fully resisting partners so you can learn what works for you. I personally believe that free practice against resisting opponents is the only viable way to learn any technique otherwise you are learning to dance.

This resonates so much with my own experience. Safe training and being street aware are different it it’s important to understand the difference. In the dojo I do not want to break arms and legs, in the street if they get broken then it’s the person that attacked me’s fault. I know how to do a safe throw and I know how to make sure they are not safe, it’s the control we learn in the dojo.

I love Kenpo and plan to continue practicing it for the rest of my life. But I agree there are a few gaps between Kenpo striking and 5.0 ground work. Jujitsu fills that gap nicely. Plus it gives more , less violent options. ( what I call the “drunk uncle” techniques) Do I Really need to knock the person out because they pushed my shoulder? Looking at you triggered salute. I think Muay Thai’s ability to fight and sweep from clinch would also be a great addition to Kenpo.

I'm a Kyokushin karateka with a strong additional background in okinawan Goju Ryu. Did a bit of Muay Thai for a while too. I do want to add some grappling to my skill set one day when time allows for it and I think it's gonna be Judo. I don't compete in MMA, my martial arts is strictly for fitness and self defense. From that perspective Judo ties into everything I do much better and is more useful. In terms of BJJ, IMO the biggest benefit for a person who doesn't plan on competing in either BJJ or MMA is learning how to control situations from the bottom and to get back up.

I was trying to find out if Kenpo techniques were "inspired" by JuJutsu. I've trained Kenpo and related systems. I tried to find a JuJutsu school, but they no longer teach it at the local dojo. They did offer Aikido so I started learning Aikido (and Iaido and later they added Gojo-Ryu). There is a similar technique in Aikido to Crossing Talons, with one very subtle difference that to me makes the Aikido version more effective. I think Japanese JuJutsu contains more wristlocks than Judo.

As someone who has trains in police combatives while wearing a "gunbelt", I believe that Judo works better for me than BJJ does. This is because people who train in BJJ rely heavily on their hips to execute techniques, which are greatly restricted by a gunbelt. In Judo, you are far less dependent on your hips, and you learn a lot more standup control than you do in BJJ. All this being said, if you "don't wear a gunbelt", then by all means train in BJJ.

Judo in historically more challenging, more competitive and harder than BJJ eventhough BJJ originated from Judo. Why do you think there's way more Judo black belts than BJJ belts? Because it's harder and more realistic to do and helps you in a real life self-defense situation. All it takes is one judo throw to end the fight. @@ArtofOneDojo I say this because of the toll it takes on the body for one. For two, judo is a great art but a small percentage of what takes place in a street fight so there are more important factors to work on in my opinion. As far as grappling arts I feel that wrestling and Jiujitsu are far superior and judo would compliment that training and shouldn’t be the primary focus when prepping for street self defense.

@@808frontline I definitely agree it works as a supplement for other arts. I'm personally learning a Japanese Jujutsu/Judo mix and find it works great with Kenpo. I wouldn't limit it though to a specific time period. Yes there can be a toll on the body just like in any art, but if practiced safely there are still a lot of benefits to redeem from it.

If that were the case, the Judoka would be dominating MMA. Many Judo throws aren't relevant to real fighting because they give up the back, or run the risk of the opponent getting up before you can. This is why BJJ went back to the classical fighting roots and said "the fight doesn't stop when it hits the ground". Train both, though. BJJ guys absolutely need to work on their standup, because the sport of BJJ has lied to them about the reality of fighting.

I didn't go into BJJ because as I we had some BJJ at our school. My instructor trained MMA fighters and he himself got into BJJ and we BJJ classes right before our Kenpo classes. Did that casually for a couple of years and got a good idea of it. I'm not ranked or even good at BJJ, but I grew respect and appreciate it. I chose Judo/Japanese Jujutsu specifically for the standup grappling. BJJ is very limited in the standup grappling in comparison, and Kenpo does have a lot of takedowns but Kenpo doesn't do any of the throwing and standup grappling I wanted. I find that all three together make a really solid mix.

I'm sorry but I don't agree that Ed Parker was a scam artist. That's not a debate I want to get into but there is a lot of conjecture out there that isn't true and too many politics. I don't agree with everything he did with the system, but his American Kenpo is very intelligently designed and can be a very quality system with the right school and a person willing to deep dive it. Today this man opened a dojo on the East Coast, teaches fellow Black people, and claims direct line as last disciple of James Mitose....He fathered children, and left their mothers. He refused to raise them, and gave them away for adoptions. Thomas Barrow Mitose was raised by a White family. He also had a daughter, too ....At least he didn't abort them. Why is it that people who can't fight always run away from combat sports and towards the so-called self defense styles? For instance people saying JJJ is better for the streets than BJJ... its not. BJJ gives you a lot that JJJ lacks like improved athleticism, live rolling to test it full force, and expertise in ground fighting. Not bashing other styles bc I would do JJJ, karate, or other TMAs to enhance my skills but I can already fight to a pretty good degree. I wouldn't start with JJJ or TKD if my goal was fighting I'd add them to a foundation of boxing and BJJ later. As for Judo vs. BJJ... it depends. I like BJJ more but I do mix in a little Judo as well. Judo guys have better throws than me typically but I usually beat the piss out of them on the floor. Judo is not usable as quickly as BJJ. If you want to get good at fighting fast go with Boxing. After a year of boxing start cross training BJJ. Next if you choose add in TKD, Muay Thai, Judo or what have you.

Why does it look fake? We're showing drills where we're learning and practicing how to do the moves properly and our partners are going with it to make sure no one gets hurt. The footage I showed is just class practice and running drills. It wasn't full resistance application.
@limbroto
@limbroto Жыл бұрын
@ArtofOneDojo maybe that was a little harsh, and I'm only judging by a few seconds of footage in the video, but tell me you think someone could ever execute the technique at 3:11 in a live scenario. It's the same type of "show" techniques that kempo wastes so much time focusing on, that could only be executed on a cooperative partner who is standing there letting you do the technique. Go visit the Judo school for even one class and you'll see how different it is.
@ArtofOneDojo
@ArtofOneDojo Жыл бұрын
@@limbroto That footage was us working flow drills. Wasn't specifically about applying that combination in a live scenario, but understanding and experimenting with how one movement can flow into another. If an opponent resists, feeling the tension and path of least resistance and working into a new motion. It's not a "show" technique, and that's the same thing with Kenpo. I don't know if you've watched this channel previously, but Kenpo is my background and this is a conversation we've had on here a lot. The biggest misconception in Kenpo is that those technique sequences are supposed to be memorized and pasted into a live scenario. That is not the case. They are not "show" techniques at all, they are "case studies". Best example I can think of, someone is studying law to be a lawyer. They have text books, with case studies. They read about and study a variety of legal cases in their education. But what is the chance they are going to encounter a case that plays out the exact same way? Same people involved, location, scenario, laws broken, charges, arresting authorities, jury...etc. Virtually none. But then why read and study those cases? Because they are examples of strategies and legal techniques that were used in a scenario so that the lawyer can learn how the system flows, works, and how to manipulate it. Kenpo is the same way. We have 154 technique sequences but they are not fighting sequences. They are really only variations of 5-10 techniques (depending how you break it down) and they are used to show how our basics and principles work together in a variety of different scenarios. We're not supposed to copy and paste a technique. But each technique can be broken down into 20 mini lessons on different basic applications that CAN be applied. After becoming proficient with the system and understanding that, applying the basics in free flow become much more natural. I've used pieces of these techniques in real life, including 3 steps from one of our Kata. There are two major problems with this approach, 1, most Kenpo schools don't teach to that depth. Many DO think it's a copy and paste sort of deal. Unfortunately there are a lot of Kenpo McDojos. But if you find a school or instructor that can teach how to break it down, it's a lot of good stuff. The second problem is, it's a very specific way to learn and doesn't work for or appeal to everyone. But it is a way to learn and if the student wants to put the time in, the value is there. This wasn't mean to be a lecture and I apologize if it comes across that way, but I just wanted to stress that they aren't "Show" techniques. The context is HEAVILY important and usually doesn't come across in video segments.

@@bloodline321 You are supporting my point. You went to a school, you didn't find it valuable, it wasn't a challenge or effect so you left it. You should have. But that's not all JJJ schools. And not all Judo schools teach JJJ, many are focused specifically on competition. Shoulder throws, wrist locks, joint locks, aren't tricks anymore than the kimura, americana, or double leg takedowns are. If the school is pressure testing and teaching variables and pushing students to work spontaneously with that they can manipulate in the moment, and that's a good thing. If it's just ritual and no effort, then of course that won't be effective and you are correct, you should leave that school. I've seen really bad BJJ schools too that don't offer much of a workout.
