My biggest pet peeve is when people ask me why I don't choose to just be a nurse practitioner or a doctor. Its really annoying. I'm so glad I found this video. I want to specialize in dermatology btw
@HerestoHealthyWomen8 жыл бұрын
Hey! It's frustrating being in a young profession in that regard for sure. But it's all about being a fantastic provider and making people see what a PA is capable of. Derm is a fantastic spot for a PA! I'm starting some cosmetic derm this fall and I'm so excited! 👏🏻👍🏻

Congrats! And yes I love everything about the integumentary system. Your video is extremely helpful for undergrad Pre PA students. Loans are insane and I'm so glad you touched upon that subject. I will be volunteering for University of Florida Oncology center and I'm hoping to learn more about skin diseases and cancers. I've had issues finding shadowing opportunities as an undergrad. Do you believe its necessary to become a member of the AAPA as a junior in college? I believe the membership fee is $300 eek. Also I can't seem to find you on snapchat.

+ItsKourtneyyy R good for you!! Thank you for all your sweet comments. My snapchat should be breelynvan if that doesn't work let me know. In regards to joining AAPA as an undergrad it is not necessary for you to do this. If you had just an extra few hundred dollars lying around why not I guess 😂it doesn't hurt your application but I didn't join it in undergrad I didn't have the extra money to do so. However it is valuable to stay up to date with the latest changes, laws and happenings within the PA profession.

I'm really grateful for coming across your video tonight. It seemed so surreal listening to you speak about why you chose PA over M.D. I had the exact challenge you had; wanted to be a doctor since I was six. But then last semester of my pre-med program, my feet buckled under me. It's been a nightmare trying to wade through all these other professions but then slowly realising that my heart never left the health profession. So inspiring, hearing your story. Thank you for sharing. Your strength is admirable

I'm only a freshman is high school, but I knew I wanted to be a doctor for a while. I feel in love with the medical field when I went to take your kid to work day with my grandma, who has been a nurse for 45+ years. I hadn't discovered what physician assistants were, so I thought that being a doctor or a nurse were my only options. I want to be a doctor, but I also really want a family and to have children, and I realized how difficult it would be if I had to go to med school, then do a residency, then possibly do a fellowship, and then have to work crazy hours and pay mountains of student loans. I have A LOT of respect for doctors who are also parents. I didn't know what to do because I want to be in the medical field so bad, but I didn't want to be a nurse. My friend actual introduced me to the concept of PA's because he wants to be one too. Everything about PA's is perfect for me. I'd get to do basically the same thing as a doctor, minus the crazy hours (in most specialties) and the debt. I'm so happy I discovered this profession and I can't wait to actually become a PA! I loved this video so much, you explain very clearly and very in depth. You are literally my goals in life 😂

Thank you for this video. I've been looking for something like this as I've really been stressing and anxious over the decision between PA and MD/DO. I know that my passion is science and healthcare, but just like you I see myself as a mother and wife in the future foremost. People always say the time in med school will fly and that I shouldn't make any decision based on my fiancé or anything like that, but it is really about where I see myself like you mentioned. So this was really so helpful. Thank you.

Hi Amber! It can be such a difficult choice, and honestly one of the most important ones you'll make. Wow Bree you did such a great informative video. I am living proof of today. Like you I had a full ride to my undergraduate degree. I majored in Chemistry in the permed track and graduated with 3.5 GPA. I met my now husband who was also on the same full ride and track but he was a year behind me. I went to medical school for 1 year maintaining highpass and honors but the distance too a toll on our relationship. We were really serious about each other. I have always wanted to be a doctor but at the same time I see myself being married to this man and having a family with him. I decided to look for an alternative medical career that would allow me to have more flexibility. I came across the PA profession. Remember 25 years ago, there were no Internet research. I did the research manually and found that this would be more suitable for me. I dropped out of medical school and applied to PA school(Hahnemann PA program) It was the hardest interview process I've ever had. For 100 positions, there were 3,000 applicants applying. You might get in by having outstanding GPA'S but if you fail the interview, you were done. You have to have something special or unique about you that will set you apart from just having a good GPA. Are you compassionate, do you have good bedside manners, and can you truly listen to your patients and talk to them at their level so they can understand you? Because by time you are done with the history and physical exam, you should have an idea of your differentials and only needed to order tests to confirm your diagnosis. My husband (boyfriend at the time ) went on to medical school as well. With the loans between both of us in medical school would be nearing a half a million dollars. I finished PA school and was practicing when he was still doing his residency. We got married during his last year as chief resident of internal medicine after 10 years of dating. Between the both of us, our student loan was close to $300k( more if I finished medical school ) When I got pregnant after 1 year of marriage, we started to look for a house instead of renting. Between both our incomes, we could only qualify for $80k-$90k home loan bc our debt ratio was too high and we have no assets? Since we were both in ER, we had no insurance bc we were independent contractors. Now with the pregnancy, we couldn't even buy insurance bc it was a "pre-existing " condition. Long story short, we eventually bought a house, we paid cash for my whole pregnancy (no such thing as professional courtesy). I was planning on going back into practice but 6 months after my first born, I was pregnant again. My husband and I decided that it was better if I stayed home to raise our children and I can return to practice later but probably not ER due to the schedule. I ended up having 5 children within 7years. One of my child was on the autism spectrum. 10 years ago, there was not much known about this and no available resources to help. I cried and just wanted to give him a "pill" to treat this syndrome. However with my medical background, I refocused and put him into 3 speech therapies per week, enrolled him into PT and OT for his sensory and motor developmental issues. My 2 younger ones had speech and sensory delays as well but I tackled it very early on. My husband and I paid all these therapies out of pocket bc it was not covered under our insurance as developmental delays. I stayed home to work on our children while my husband worked as an ER physician. I practiced pediatric medicine at home for the last 15 years. Now all my children are all in the gifted programs at school. My oldest is a senior and will be graduating at 16 years old. My second is a junior and will still be 16 a few weeks into her first year of college. My Asperger son is a gifted pianist who loves to play and sing Sir Elton John, Eric Clapton, Billy Joel to name a few since he was in 3rd grade. My 10 year old is in 6th grade and in the gifted program. My 9 year old with speech and sensory delays is in 4th grade and also in the gifted program. I am so grateful that I made the right decision as I did 25 years ago. I enjoyed being a mom and raising all my children instead of sending them off to a daycare center or by nannies. Nowadays, I work a few days a month doing simple cosmetic procedures and am a talented culinary chef to boot 😄 Being a PA as a woman allowed me to enjoy the best of everything life has to offer without any sacrifices. But I couldn't have done all of this alone without my life and soul partner, my husband 😄 I hope this will help many out there who are still deciding what to do. This was not a "brag" session for the haters out there. This is to show everyone that it is possible to achieve this rewarding lifestyle. I'm living proof 😄 Good luck Bree!

Hi Kay! Wow! I LOVED reading your story! Thank you for sharing it with us! Wouldn't it be nice to jump in the future and see what our lives are going to look like so we can make the best decisions ha ha. Reading thru this I just kept thinking how differently your children would have turned out had you not decided to stay home and be the one to raise them. There really is nothing to replace the role of a Mother. There are parents who have to work full-time to make ends meet (i.e. the best woman I know my Mom was a single working mother) and of course everyone's situation is so different. But what a blessing for your kids you chose and were able to be home everyday and raise them! Are you on instagram? If you are send me a direct message so we can link up! Thanks Kay! Bree

@HerestoHealthyWomen8 жыл бұрын
Hey Tyra! Thank you! Those are both great options which have very different training tracks and very different lifestyles but both great. Trauma surgery is medical school plus residency training you're looking at 8+ years post grad education however if it's what you really want at the end and it's more import and to you than everything else..and most import any if it fulfills you as a person and will make you happy than go for it! You should shadow both and try and shadow females to see what it's like for them mixed with their home life. The best way to decide is to spend time with both professions.

If you don't want to go all the way thru Med school CRNA ( nurse anesthetist) is the best route to go as aa is not accepted in all states and jobs are limited. In fact CRNAs often make more than PAs and NPs 👍🏻

I love the video! I'm also thinking of PA school to specialize in surgery but want to know what it's like as a PA vs. MD. I really enjoy the thrill of surgery but PAs are given less autonomy (it sounds like) in surgery rather than in medical specialties, being only a first assist. Is this true? How is it really like in surgery for you? Everyone says to go to medical school if you want to advance in surgery but I feel the same way when you say that you want to be a mom and not hire a nanny. I think striking a work/personal life balance is so important!!
@HerestoHealthyWomen8 жыл бұрын
Hi Victoria, I love surgery as well, but as a PA I am not leading the cases I am first assist. I have an active role when I'm there where I am able to do as much as the surgeon is willing to let me do. The longer you are with your surgeon and they see your abilities the more "independence" in the OR you have. It satisfies my surgery bug enough and I'm happy with my role in surgery. BUT if you want to be lead surgeon you probably won't be happy as a PA and you should become an MD. With that being said surgical specialties for physicians are demanding jobs. It isn't a set 9-5 schedule for them. So there are trade offs. You should find a surgical team to shadow who has a 1st assist PA and be in the O.R. With them. That would answer a lot for you I think.

Hi Angel, yes it is a HUGE commitment both in time (you won't exist outside of PA school for two years) and financially. You'll be in around 120,000+ in debt if you take out all the money offered to you (which I don't recommend doing if you can help it). With that being said if it's what you want and you plan on working to justify the time and debt and you know what you're getting yourself into and it still makes since then do it! 💕

Why would someone ask a PA when they are going back to school lol PA is a great profession. We chose PA for a reason...which by the way, if you are LUCKY enough to get an interview, make sure you work on the question, "Why do you want to be a PA?". They will ask you and you can tell them why you chose PA and not a DO, MD, RN or NP. I was pre-med for the longest time but honestly, can't be happy enough that I, in the end, chose PA since it better fits my lifestyle :)

Hi. I've just finished my undergraduate degree of biomedical science in the UK. I'm strongly thinking of starting the physician associate postgraduate course in a few months. This video has been very helpful. I have just one question: what kind of respect do PA's get in the healthcare system from other colleagues, such as doctors and nurses? Thank you.

I've felt very respected. PA is a younger field so people are still learning who we are and what we do. But it's getting better and better!

Do MD. Unless you are 65 and don't have the time. You will hate being a PA because you will be the doctor's pet for the rest of your life. You have to learn basically the same amount of things but get paid less and gain less respect

Breelyn, I just submitted my apps this cycle. You and I have very similar reasons for choosing MD over PA. I was also a pre-med, and realized the age I would be (32) at the time I finish residency. I too, want to start a family and marriage, etc. I was just wondering if this is something that you said during your interviews when they asked you specifically why you chose the PA profession? Because I know that there are probably physicians who are there conducting the interviews on the panel, and i'm thinking that this probably wouldnt be a great thing to say during your interviews? Did you instead, cater your response to the schools or did you say these very reasons about time, being a mother, and starting a family? Thank you!
@HerestoHealthyWomen8 жыл бұрын
Ohhhh Cynthia great question girl! Yes I was very honest about that. I did mention I loved medicine but not enough to commit to medical school residency and the loan debt. I did mention I realized the sacrifice I was making knowing I wouldn't ultimately be the one in charge, not having the title of "Doctor", working under someone..but I recognized this and I decided to actively choose these sacrifices in order to have the balance in my family life I wanted. What they want to know in an interview is that you understand the role of a PA, you understand the commit level of the program, they want to be sure you are a solid investment. Being honest and open works for you here. You're designing a life you can love, there's power and beautiful confidence in that!

Hi, the last time I was seen by a Doctor was 2008. I was then passed down to a Nurse Practitioner. Last month there was a charge and now I see a Physician Assistant. If you please. What are the differences between these professionals and is the quality of care less by not going to a Doctor? Thank you for the information.
@HerestoHealthyWomen8 жыл бұрын
Hi Robert. In regards to education a family practice doctor has gone to four years of medical school plus a residency which is three more years. A nurse practitioner has sought additional training past their nursing degree which is an additional 2-3 years of school. NPs do not typically have a residency. After a physician assistant has their bachelors they continue on to 2-3 years of training for their master's degree. At which point they choose whether they want to do a residency which is 1-2 years of additional training but this is not required at this time. I can tell you there are great doctors and there are others which I wouldn't trust my family with. There are great NPs and PAs and others again I wouldn't trust my family with. I often see PAs for my personal care and my family's however Robert it's truly about the provider because each one of these three types of providers have received the proper training to provide excellent care.

How much freedom do you have in the OR as a PA? Do you ever perform your own surgeries or are you always required to be with a physican?
@HerestoHealthyWomen8 жыл бұрын
Hey Kayleigh! Legally a PA is able to perform their own operations as long as it's in your delegations of service as you are able to do what your supervising physician does(however this varies by state so check in the state you hope to practice). But usually you will find PAs as 1st assist role which is what I do. You'd be surprised how much a 1st assist does however. The longer you practice and the more experience you gain the more you are able to do. The surgeon has been thru residency and much longer training of course so it depends on what the surgeon feels comfortable with you doing. There are many surgical procedures in office a PA such as myself perform independently. I practice in urology so we do cystoscopies, TUMT procedures, CMGs, Testopel, vasectomies, SP tube placement and exchange, cord injections/blocks, vaginal rejuvenation treatments, bladder Botox ect.

Hello! Thank you for this video. I have the same thought you had before applying medical school. I studied biology in undergrad, which many pre-med classes are embedded. I focused a lot on studying sciences and keeping up with the grade, but I didn't give much thought into the time length and money about going to med school. P.A is my considered profession. However I am always curious to finding answers. I worried I wouldn't learn enough from P.A school or wouldn't have enough confidence in the medical knowledges. Can you give your insight about my concern?
@HerestoHealthyWomen8 жыл бұрын
I felt very knowledgable and prepared to practice general medicine such as family practice fresh out of PA school however the specialty I chose I knew very little about When I started. My supervising doc knew this when he hired me and we treated that first year like a residency where he taught me what I needed to know. I'm still learning which is awesome but so are the doctors. We are always going to conferences and reading the latest recommendations that's just part of the job. You can choose to do a a residency after PA school it isn't required but an option if you feel you need to learn more. The key is finding a job where they will teach and train you for that specialty. You will have enough base and general medical knowledge. You will learn as much as they do in medical school. It's the residency part we miss out on. Hope that helps.

Hi Juliana! Honestly? It's not very possible. In fact my school wouldn't even allow it. But it's only two years. I didn't have children during PA school. Two students in my class did. It was hard, really hard but they did it. You'll need a great support system. You'll need fantastic child care. The didactic year is the hardest. Rotation year was better schedule wise. If it's what you want and know it is best for family you'll find a way to make it happen 💕👍🏻👊🏻 Bree

@johana36818 жыл бұрын
Hi, thank you for putting up your video, It is very informative. I have my bachelors in bio and have been working as an EMT for 2yrs on and off full and part time. I am also a caregiver and have accrued over 1200-1500 hours of volunteer hours in Pediatrics and ER for last 7-8 years. I share the same exact mindset as you, in that I really want to be a mother first and foremost but I also love the med field which is one of the reasons I felt PA was best. My main concern is whether or not my grades/GPA (slightly over 3.0) will kill my odds. Im curious to hear what you think I should do to increase my odds.
@HerestoHealthyWomen8 жыл бұрын
Hey Johana! Wow you've done so much already! Impressive. The schools will initially include or exclude your application based on a GPA so it needs to be the minimum requirement in all categories, sciences, overall and pre-reqs. If it isn't you'll need to retake those classes which are pulling down your average. Aside from that your experience and volunteer sound stellar. Discuss in your personal statement why your GPA is lower, what you've learned and why it won't be a problem in PA school. Get a KILLER score on your GRE, PA shadowing hours and amazing letter of recommendation and girl you're in!

change840 thanks! You contact as many people as possible that have any connections to PAs until you find someone to say yes. You go in person and ask as much as possible. Go thru your primary care office and other doctor's offices to find PAs as well. I didn't understand the last part of your question I didn't have children while in school. It was extremely challenging and I was gone from 7am-midnight pretty much every day. If you have children now look into programs that are a little longer to make it easier for example the Las Vegas Tuoro program is three years instead of two like mine.

Hi, Bree. Thanks so much for making this video! I am currently a English major and am taking the pre-req courses for PA school. Just out of curiosity, how many PA schools did you apply to and which one did you end up attending? Was cost the ultimate deciding factor when you chose a program?
@HerestoHealthyWomen8 жыл бұрын
Hi Megan, I've been trying to remember how many I think around 10-12. Yes the cost was the least outrageous 😂 but ultimately I chose the program because they allowed me to do rotations in my home state of Utah. I attended Western University in Pomona, CA
@meganbuckley71928 жыл бұрын
Thanks for getting back to me. :) Western is right in my neck of the woods and I plan on applying there in the near future. Hi! I think you are referring to CME (continuing medical education) which is a certain number of hours which should be spent every two years doing continuing education. MDs and PAs are both required to complete this every couple of years. Most of us go to a few conferences thru the year to complete our credit. But great providers are always learning to be better. Thanks!

It's never too early to start deciding what you want. My biggest wish is I would have known sooner his is what I wanted and just pushed right thru and gotten done earlier. You could look into college programs that offer a combined undergrad and PA program mixed into it. There are accelerated programs where you just go straight thru. You can and should start calling PAs on your area and cold call to see if they would be open to you shadowing them to see what the job is really like. Many places however may require you to wait until you're 18 but if you talk with your Councelor they could get you set up with a PA for a job fair maybe. Just ask! Thanks for watching! Bree

Hey Emma, I became a CNA my junior year of high school. I did have a year gap between graduation and starting PA school but only because I ended my Med school applications when I decided on PA. @HerestoHealthyWomen8 жыл бұрын
Hafsah Umerani hi! You need paid clinical hours for most programs which usually entails you getting some kind of certificate like a MA or CNA which are short courses you can take during a semester. Getting a certificate also shows some extra initiative and commitment. I would start as soon as you could to just get done and often first time applicants don't get on so you don't want to miss a year just in case.

Great questions! Some science classes require more time than others. For example anatomy is time consuming and difficult I would choose to take this as your only science class. But other classes like biology and genetics could be taken together. What I would recommend is you pick your too 10-20 PA schools and take all the necessary pre req classes for those schools. Most should be the same but some with throw in extra funny little classes like medical terminology. I'm just finishing up a video on prepping for PA school so subscribe to my channel to see the update. Howl fully that helps! Thanks! Bree

I know it depends on how aggressively you decide to pay, but what is a realistic expectation of the amount of time it will take to pay PA School loans off?
@HerestoHealthyWomen8 жыл бұрын
Hi Brittany, most people pay the minimum payment but that means you're paying thousands and thousands in interest Over the 20 or 30 year life of the loan. You can do salary adjusted payments but it just extends the life of the loan. I would say it takes most PAs 15+ years to pay off their loans but everyone's situation is different. Take out the BARE MINIMUM you can get away with.

Hello, I loved your video. It was very helpful. I am thinking about going into surgical physician assistant in the cardiothoracic field. After you finished PA school when did you do your surgical residency and how long did it take. I am currently a junior and my major is cellular molecular biology. I don't have any medical experience except office work. I am worrying that I made a huge mistake choosing this career path however I have always wanted to become a physician assistant since I was young. I mean I wanted to be a doctor but not spend all the years in school but I didn't want to be a nurse. Then I learned about physician assisting. Any advice for me?
@HerestoHealthyWomen8 жыл бұрын
Hi Dominique, I didn't do a residency after PA school. It is an option but not necessary. I just began working and chose a supervising physician willing to train me to their specialty. It sounds like you aren't sure if PA is the right fit for you and that's totally okay and awesome that you're being honest with yourself. It's a BIG decision. My advice is to shadow several PAs. Spend time around them and see if it's the correct lifestyle and career choice for you. Evaluate your salary, quality of life and debt to be a PA. You will need to start getting direct patient care hours if you do plan on applying to PA school. Thanks!

I took concurrent enrollment classes as many as I could which give you credit in high school and in college and then my senior year I mostly spent on campus at a college because I had finished my high school credits. I did summer school the summer between my junior and senior year which gave me credit for both high school and college classes but helped me get through the high school credits sooner. The scholarship I earned was called the century scholarship it's for students who receive their associates degree during high school and then then the state will pay for the next two years of college.

+Here's to Healthy Women, Breelyn Van Leeuwen PA-C thank-you very much. I'm also going to do college credits while I'm still in hs. And I was worried that not entering university as a freshman would hinder my scholarship opportunities. But u just confirmed that I can graduate university debt free! (and yes, I'm thinking about students loans at 16.... oops!)

Hi Bree! I am currently going into my senior year of high school, and I will graduate with a full associate of science. Is the scholarship something you applied for, and is it only in certain states? What are the requirements to receive it? Thanks:)

+Alexandrea Bode good for you! I know it was in my state of Utah idk if it's a nationwide offer? Ask your counsellors at school! There should be some awesome scholarships for you!
