Banks offer customers services. They keep your money save and insured (if they are FDIC covered), provide different means for you to access your funds (ATMs and debit cards), monitor accounts for potential fraud, and provide several everyday financial services (cash advances, check cashing, deposits and withdrawals). They have to pay people to do all these things. You expect all that to be free? The terms of “lending” as you say, are favorable to you, not the bank. When you deposit $100 in a checking account, the terms of the account state that you may withdraw your funds whenever you want. The bank does not just get to keep the funds you deposit. There is risk there, as you are in control of how much you keep in your account. Stop expecting banks to do everything for you for free. Furthermore, there are plenty of account options that will waive the monthly service charge if you meet some sort of requirement.

Well what do you think ye old banks are doing? They buy bonds and lend money. What they lend keeps the lights on. The fees pay the executives. The bonds pay the savings rates. Obviously not that simple but, remove the massive millions from the executives and pay them normal wages and we would not have this problem. These low interest rates are why people can't save and spend. You have to choose if you want to invest or spend your money. Saving money today doesn't do anything for you other than reassurance of stability. If I can't save then the banks can't lend. It all feeds into one another.

great video. mostly commenting for algorithm. I'm sure graham knows, and intentionally left out of the video, that the likely reason these major banks are are giving such terrible interest rates for checking and savings accounts and lots of fees is to discourage potential customers who aren't going to make them any money by just using checking and savings accounts (which cost them money in customer service). These banks have separate wealth management services as part of their investment banking sides of their businesses that they want anyone with half a brain and 20k+ laying around to make use of so you both make more money (and those by law must be separate accounts); checking and savings accounts are there as a convenience to those customers. HSBC just noped out entirely of it, that's hilarious.

Navy federal is great but their Zelle limits suck and their transfer between accounts is a bit mysterious.

"You reading this? If so...smash the like button :)" I always do.. but definitely had to with that one. 😂 You always find creative ways to sneak the "smash the like button" in there!

Graham I just wanted to let you know that I’ve been watching you for years and you motivated me to finally start my KZbin channel. I kept telling myself that I don’t have time and I finally stopped making excuses and I started. Thank you for the motivation and keep up the good work.
